I'd say Beyonce wins on album art.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly wins on album title.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say everyone wins because they're both super-talented and gorgeous.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Crazy In Love > Dilemma > Work It Out > Can't Nobody > 03 Bonnie & Clyde > Stole

don't know what that proves but i think it might mean i choose beyonce

(also what dan said)

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what I've heard of their respective solo stuff is no good.
in DC context, I like Kelly better.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

beyonce
kelly's solo stuff is terrible, crazy in love and work it out are great
(in my opinion,etcetc)

robin (robin), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

really robin! in YOUR opinion!

wow!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the nelly and kelly record and the beyonce and jay record are both great

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce, hands down.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

''the nelly and kelly record''

bland stuff gareth!

beyonce and jay z much bettah.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

They're both fantastic. Kelly has a slight edge in that I've like all of her singles but Beyonce's involved in two that just irritate me ("Work It Out", "03 Bonnie and Clyde").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

eh,what,julio?

robin (robin), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

just making a lame joke robin.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ok

robin (robin), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Both unspeakably meaningless.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

like all the best music alex!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Crazy in Love is kind of 'eh'...it's got a good angle but really it just does the same thing too much. I was disappointed by that.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

kelly wins on voice, beyonce wins on looks and overall talent

squirl plise, Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it okay if I want to kick both of them in the vagina?

David Allen, Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

no

minna (minna), Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i stood in line for ages listening to kelly's album on repeat in order to meet her and there's no way i'd buy that album. the beyonce album is tantalising me with its sparkly cover art and 'crazy in love'. when kelly was on tv here she said something gross about liking soggy fruitloops. beyonce just looked kind of stunned and giggled a lot. stole is a pretty bad song, can't nobody is unremarkable. nelly and kelly is good. crazy in love is really great, 03 bonnie & clyde is not so good, work it out was good in theory but i never want to listen to it. beyonce wins but jumpin jumpin is the best song either of them has been involved in.

minna (minna), Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

This is not the Kelly I was looking for but I will nonetheless take this opportunity to say that Miss Independant is the best single of 2003. Sounds like Judas Priest meets EMF/Frankie Goes to Hollywood produced by Neptunes for a Pepsi commercial.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"crazy in love" has a great chorus but the rest of the song fails to match it.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Otis. Fucking. Wheeler? I was listening to Miss Independent before, I was surprisingly not bad, the chorus was good. The rest was meh. Kind of like Beyonce's song, I agree.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the horn arrangement in ''crazy in love'' is a nice touch and I do think the whole damn thing is pretty good. not perfect but v good.

the word 'talent' is just being thrown around but it's not made to mean much. no one is saying why they are so talented.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce's singing voice strikes me as genuinely excellent. octave range is good if not quite in Mariah zone but frankly that may be a blessing. she's basically got a real power in her voice that lends itself superbly to her brand of 'contemporary sassy streetsoul' which is what the kids are calling it i believe. she also has production credits on a lot of her material plus songwriting so all in all, however vague those credits may be, you get the distinct impression that Beyonce is immensely talented (havent seen Goldmember so cant comment on her acting prowess). she also has an amazingly talented arse.

kelly i have no real opinion on, which is quite telling i guess.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 June 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

and i do like 'work it out' a lot, perhaps the 'foxy lady' bootleg more tho.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 June 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

beyonce was on the today show this morning,,and she was awful..thank god she has an ottoman sized ass to hypnotize me so i dont notice how flat she sings..kelly is good if u make sure to change her oat bag once a day.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 28 June 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

all the recent threads about female singers have grossout degrees of unapologetic lecherism verging on misogyny. 'twasn't always thus. where are you all coming from?

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 28 June 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

lechery? maybe.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 28 June 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to dan's and jbr's sentiments so far.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 June 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

im an unapologized lecherist from way back..doesnt mean i dont support/love/nourish/comfort/house/bolster the sagging confidences of/entertain/some of the best wimmen the bio sphere has seen fit to hatch.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 28 June 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist - Beyonce flaunts it, therefore I am quite entitled to comment, however unconstructively, on her flaunted ass

and Beyonce doesn't always sing flat right? sorry i can't tell and may have been deceived by her impressive bellowing

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 28 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Crazy In Love"- a brave attempt to fuse the disparate genres of rap and R&B.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 June 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hip pop

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 28 June 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Crazy in Love" the first single off of this album because that would make sense? It seems to have been engineered to just register, to have an instant impact (similarly to, say, the dramatic thrust of Mis-teeq's "Scandalous", also a lead-off single). Beyonce's singing on it is a weird mush as well. All the word-endings seem to bleed into each other creating whole sentences strung along on her melisma's momentum. It's a weird song in some ways. The drop / recession of the verses (like the eerie bit of Sugababes "Round Round" has been co-opted and actually given the pride of a place within the song) which is completely burst by the force of the chorus brass. Good song. Kelly's just a bit meh.

Great chorus for use in ensemble action reel highlights on sports shows too.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 28 June 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this thread would be about Kelly Osbourne vs. Beyonce. :(

I love Jay-Z's verse on Crazy in Love, how he takes the 'uh oh uh oh' bit and makes it the motif for his rap.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

dom have you been paying attention to the radio for, oh, the last 15-20 years?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 June 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

also: amateurist otm.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

jess: isn't dom english or something?

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 June 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There's this thing called sarcasm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 June 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ah yes, english 'wit'

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 June 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the horns are the best thing in 'crazy in love' (6th best thing in 'pump it up'), the high dollar daisy dukes were enough to convince me to forgive beyonce for letting her dad fuck up destiny's child

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 June 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ah yes, english 'wit'

Wilde vs. Bierce FITE (which was actually a battle at the time -- I love Wilde but Bierce wins)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 June 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ireland declares war on Ned Raggett

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 June 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Goddamn!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

HEAVENS! Ned ki...oh, forget it, that's dead to me now.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 29 June 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

*whistles idly* There had to be a burnout at some point.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)
