or, semi-biting riffs and chord progressions off your previous smash LP.

when i first heard 'there's no home for you here' i was a bit turned off by how close it sounded to 'dead leaves'. but soon enough i was enjoying it. i like the way it's recorded - the layered vocals over shrieking guitar in that little break, and the way the electric piano cuts through everything in little spurts. and i like how everything opens up for a big snare thwack on the 1st 4 of the choruses.

in utero is my favorite nirvana album, but rape me is one of my least fave songs on it.

anyways, i haven't read anything about this stripes album, so i don't know if and in what way, they were making any "statements" (???) but i'm curious as to what he was thinking

the nirvana makes sense, and the reason i really like that album is because of the hyper-self-awareness

Yeah, that's real bullshit. I'm no big Nirvana maniac (I'm much of a maniac for anything), but the White Stripes measure up badly next to anything that anyone has ever done well. They're good, mind you, but they're just the stealingest band ever. You name it, somebody did it first and better than the White Stripes. They're the new Black Crowes, really.

I would concur on the White Stripes being excellent, a fact bolstered by Meg's breasts, Holly Golightly's guest appearance on their recent album, and Jack White's increasing resemblence to a doughy Michael Jackson.

Whilst I gave them a fair shot, Nirvana's appeal has continued to escape me. Not a bad band, but Cobain was a rather boring figure whose journals reveal as much.

All that said, the White Stripes tune is only average and it doesn't stand out as much as many of their other tunes, and Rape Me is a terrible, terrible song. I'll go with the White Stripes.

'there's no home' is indeed a genius build of a song, and the harmonies KILL. 'rape me' is an appallingly self-pitying and ptiably 'offensive' lyric over a sleepily-concocted chord structure.

and they sound like the Kinks at times, as well. I like some of their stuff but that are far from great. Look at it this way... they ain't starting no musical revolution.

Nirvana, though far from being my favorite band, do have moments of utter brilliance.

IMHO, songs like Sliver and Negative Creep are hall of fame.

does anyone have any more examples of artists stealing their own songs?

and am i right to imagine jack white saying "my songcraft is such that i can recycle my own tunes and still strike gold"?? like i say, i'm not really aware of what's been discussed about this album

CCR's John Fogerty got sued by his old record company (Fantasy) because they said his "Old Man Down The Road" from the mid80s had ripped-off CCR's "Run Through The Jungle" (which he also wrote and sang)....
