turn them up, the neighbours are listening...

etc

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 June 2003 09:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

i just listened to 'take it easy' and the randy meisner solo album today. both class not ass!

doom-e, Friday, 27 June 2003 09:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Doomie there's TWO Meisner albums! Which one?

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

the live one that revola just put out - the version of 'take it too the limit' is sublime. meisner is the greatest undiscovered secret in all of soul music.

the harmonies on 'take it easy' outdo the byrds. i referenced the eagles in a latest review. i want an eagles is cool revival!

doom-e, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, you don't. The end result of this is bands like Goldrush. Of which we need NO MORE.

I don't mind The Eagles. But Eagles revival = a host of shite bands trying to sound like The Eagles and that needs to stop.

But oh yeah, you *like* all that Tyde/Beachwood Sparks/Hollywood Hillbilly crap, don't you?

kate (kate), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bring on the revival, as long as anybody besides Kings of Leon benefit

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Teenage Jail (best Alice Cooper knockoff evah)
The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks (best Steve Miller knockoff evah)
In The City (best Eagles knockoff evah)
Disco Strangler (worst disco knockoff evah, but best knockoff of Devo's "Satisfaction")
I Can't Tell You Why (best Carole King knockoff evah)
Hotel California (Steely Dan HATED these guys, btw)
Journey of the Sorcerer (just based on the AMG description; haven't actually heard it)

(and round this out with any of the obvious singles... "Desperado" etc) (just not "Get Over It," ok?)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

(actually Doomie you might be able to help, is there any way of getting ahold of the 'Gene Clarke and the Gosdin Bros.' album?)

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

'sorry man, i just hate the fuckin eagles!'
'get out of my cab!'

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Journey of the Sorcerer" is a total photocopy of Radiohead's "The Tourist"

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is "Greeks" the only song ever written with the word 'barfing' in it? (Some Aussie band must've done one?)

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

or Weird Al Yankovic

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

tis difficult one to get a hold off - i will ask around this weekend, yeah?

oh, everybody hates the eagles, but everyone hated fleetwood mac until courtney love and kurt cobain made it cool and fleetwood mac is almost as good as the eagles, but not quite.

the new cosmic rough riders has JOE WALSH on it. beachwood sparks, complete eagles rip-off!!!!!!! why would you *not* like the eagles. the fm radio sunshine sounds all based on a gramme of cocaine, angelic harmonies and killer guitar solos, without the eagles, there would be no, teenage fanclub etc.

plus, what about the poor? hearts and flowers? linda ronstadt? the eagles made good on the promise of 'cosmic american music' but everyone forgets about that concentrates on the sub-par music of gram parsons (sub-par when compared to the eagles!!)

doom-e, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Journey of the Sorcerer" is a total photocopy of Radiohead's "The Tourist"

"...the cosmic-cowboy instrumental 'Journey of the Sorcerer' (later used as the theme music for the British television series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)"

Marvin the Paranoid Android to thread!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Henley/Parsons = Eminem/Vanilla Ice

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

('Paranoid Android' gtr solo) vs ('I Can't Tell You Why' gtr solo)! Actually they're both good

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

radiohead's carly simon cover vs the eagles' tom waits cover

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

"come on, you & whose army" vs "i'm sick and tired of your law and order"

dave q, Friday, 27 June 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ass

vs

You do it to yourself, you do
And that's what really hurts
Is that you do it to yourself
Just you and no one else
You do it to yourself

Yeeeaahh, Jody Beth U R my new hero (enough so I'm willing to go all TAFKAP for a moment, I guess,) simply for respecting "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" *and* "Disco Strangler."

I defer to your obvious discernment...

>Is "Greeks" the only song ever written with the word 'barfing' in it?

Frank and Moon Unit Zappa, "Valley Girl," "barf out, gag me with a spoon" (perhaps more monologue than lyric, alas)

brimstead, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 21:15 (two years ago) link

Not really a fan, but I can stand these ten:

My Man
Best of My Love
Journey of the Sorcerer
Take It to the Limit
Hotel California
New Kid in Town
Life in the Fast Lane
Pretty Maids All in a Row
Try and Love Again
I Can't Tell You Why

I like four that you mention, and would add:

On the Border
The Disco Strangler
Those Shoes

Don Henley's a great singer I almost never want to hear sing.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 21:29 (two years ago) link

“one of these nights” has maybe my favorite don vocal performance

brimstead, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 23:52 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it's not a bad Bee Gees pastiche and the opening sounds like it would make a great sample.

birdistheword, Thursday, 19 August 2021 00:40 (two years ago) link

it’s more his smokey tone in verses than the chorus for me

brimstead, Thursday, 19 August 2021 00:46 (two years ago) link

I was actually surprised when I found out Don Henley was in the Eagles. Like I knew him as this '80s adult contemporary guy behind "Boys of Summer, "End of the Innocence," "Heart of the Matter," "All She Wants to Do Is Dance," etc. and it was weird to find out that he had this decade-long existence as a "country-rock" guy almost as old as Woodstock. But yeah, I like Henley as a vocalist - I'm much more partial to those '80s hits though.
