because I was listening to 'gentle harm of the burgeoisie this morning' and that's what it sounds like to me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 June 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh* no ILXORS enjoy solo improv on trombone.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

no dude that was my speciality! Ackerman Junior High School stage band, I had mad flavor on the 'bone, especially solo unaccompanied where I'd do the airplane noise, the fart noise, slam the thing on the floor like Jerry Lee Lewis, pull off the mouthpiece and skronk on that for a while

I was the skinny white bespectacled Rahsaan Roland Kirk of the trombone!

Neudonym, Monday, 30 June 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you a racist or something! ;-)

sub-trifean at best (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I too am well versed in the ways of the Johnny Briggs theme tune. I do miss the T-bone sometimes though - I gave it up when I was about 15 and realised that it wasn't very heavy metal to play in the school wind band.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but paul rutherford is heavy-meatl-experimental-horse-industrial-strength-take-no-motherfucking-prisoners trombone!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a kid - I knew nothing. Back then, Metallica was everything. And everything else was nothing. And the trombone was an albatross about my neck. Little did I realise just how fucking cool I would be today, if on occasion, I was able to whip out a gleaming valve T-bone (no entendre intended), and start blowing minds with bursts of insane sustained syncopated fusion.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well if you had realised what a cool fuck you could be...you would have pussy every night of the week!

plz don't put the word 'fusion' in this thread. its like pouring acid over my eyes as it reminds of all of that post-miles davis crap.

BTW that drum solo on the new metallica single is the best thing abt it i'm sure you'll agree.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a shame there aren't more really great trombonists working in improv. That instrument offers many possibilities for interesting sound creation and extended technique, and there is just plain fun and good humor in the smears, growls, farts, gurgles, wind sounds, and muted sounds. Rutherford is fantastic, and that record is a real milestone of improv - he's endlessly inventive. I'm not sure about glitch affinities; I'd have to pull it out and give it another listen.

I saw a wonderful duet a couple years ago between 'bone players Wolter Wierbos and Jeb Bishop; those two need to make a record.

I'm still hankering to hear that Lunge record that Marcello was so high on. Julio, have you heard them? Also, how did you end up feeling about Goat (I think it's their best record)?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

diamond: thanks for yr post (my first ans: that no ILXORS would be keen on solo improv on trombone was a joke of course as I knew you'd eventually post here).

The glitch thing was a joke of sorts but its just referring to the range of sounds he extracts from *just* a trombone. he makes it sound like an orchestra!

I have got lunge and if you'd like a burn of that I can give it you (I was gonna ask you if i could get a burn of one of the recs you mentioned on the free jazz POX thread).

Gail is inventive on trombone but Lunge is a quartet and, when they get playing with the lower end of the volume range it gets v exciting, v tense. a wonderful release.

I have seen Jeb bishop with the brotzamnn octet (or tentet, can't recall, last year) and I enjoyed it lots.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and as far as 'goat' is concerned: I played it five times over the weekend. I hope that ans yr q.

I'm probably getting the singles comp next.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just been listening to an excellent Roscoe Mitchell disc from '75 which features a 23 year old George Lewis doing some crazy mad improv noise-parping on the 'bone.

And Roswell motherfuckin' Rudd.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and there are plenty of Raymond Scott recordings from the 50s/60s that sound like Oval!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I need to hear more George Lewis. I only have Voyager and Homage to Charles Parker. Actually I'd really like to hear his solo record on Sackville, and compare it with the Rutherford one.

I just listened to the first three tracks of Gentle Harm and yeah it still sounds amazing. He does do a lot of interesting things to muddle or "glitch" his tones. He holds a mute loosely against the bell to create fuzzy, buzzing sounds; other times he rattles the mutes to create percussive interruptions. He incorporates lots of vocalizations both consonant and dissonant that produce grainy overtones.

Julio - sure, I'd love to do a swap! I still a couple people some things, so it may take me a coupla weeks, but I'd love to hear that Lunge record.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

George lewis is just brilliant as well: I have a solo trobeone LP of his from the late 80s I think, which has one side taken up by a him on three trombones simulateneously (a tape piece) and that has some yummy textures.

and then you've got his work with anthony braxton on the quartet (dortmund) on hatology (haven't got the quintet yet but shall).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

''Julio - sure, I'd love to do a swap! I still a couple people some things, so it may take me a coupla weeks, but I'd love to hear that Lunge record.''

yeah no problem abt taking a coupel of weeks as I have a few things to send ILXORS too.

I'll email ya!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I just checked: the one on sackville is the george lewis solo rec I was talking abt.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello there..

I'm thrilled that you are into listening to Lunge's CD and it always makes me happy when people get into any improvised music.

But pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease - buy records - don't burn!! I know CDs are expensive, but it is my job as well as my 1st love!!

with respect and love

Gail

Gail Brand, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

hi gail!

So glad you found my thread. er yeah sorry abt burning yr record I will always buy this stuff if I can but as you know there's lots of out of print/hard to find recs. We're just helping each other out.

I saw you on the freedom of the city fest and enjoyed your duo with wothisname lots. got the CD.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, whilst idly dreaming over lunchtime I thought you could equally apply the thread question to the Paul Rutherford out of FGTH who did "Get Real" in '88...

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Rutherford reissue imminent from Emanem: '83 trio session live at Bracknell (originally on Ogun IIRC) with Paul Rogers and Nigel Morris on rhythm. Very forthright and adroit playing. MCing by Lol Coxhill: "Ladies and gentleman, the Kenny Everett Trio!"
