JAW MEETS DESK

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, did anyone else find that Ozzy + Dweezil version of "Staying Alive" while searching for the John Tesh thing? It's great, but is it really Ozzy or is it an impersonator?

scaredy Cat, Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

shite shockah

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the dweezil zappa (and nuno bettencourt) version of that song actually has donny osmond on vocals

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(hence the 'take it marie' ad-lib pre-guitar solo)

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I think it is odd that he chose to go with Donny Osmond over Ozzy Osbourne, unless that is indeed an impersonator. Ozzy doing that is way cooler than Donny.

Scaredy cat, Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Maura, have you heard the Ozzy version? Donny appeared on the Dweezil album, "Confessions," but there is an Ozzy version as well that never made it to any album.

Scaredy Cat, Sunday, 29 June 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

... hence the Ozzy laugh pre-guitar solo...

Scaredy Cat, Sunday, 29 June 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

... and "I am disco man" and "all aboard the disco train" ad-libs...

Scaredy Cat, Sunday, 29 June 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

god. every fucking flaming lips cover song is SO BAD.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 29 June 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Add "super" between "SO" and "BAD" and you're spot-on in this case

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 29 June 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool. Like the superbad website?

I haven't heard another FL cover... oh wait, "What A Wonderful World", but that's SO GOOD. I thought this was a fun listen; they just did it for a radio appearance. I will listen to it about as much as Dweezil + Tesh (never again).

But, I definitely dig Ozzy + Dweezil singing "Staying Alive". That's really good. (Anyone know if that's really him, though?)

Scaredy Cat, Sunday, 29 June 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

>>>god. every fucking flaming lips cover song is SO BAD. <<<

I respectfully disagree. 'Sonic Reducer,' 'If I Only Had a Brain,' 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head,' 'It Was a Very Good Year,' 'Anyway Anyhow Anywhere,' 'Ice Drummer,' 'Sun Arise,' and 'The New Mary Jane' have all recieved excellent treatments.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 30 June 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Flaming Lips are so clever, aren't they? This is an old trick, though. I saw 'em in ought-'88, and they sang the lyrics to one Zep song (Black Dog) over the music to another Zep song (Dyer Mak'er). The original mash-up artists! But they are so very very tiresome. I mean, aren't they?

JesseFox (JesseFox), Monday, 30 June 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

no ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 June 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Brilliant. I love the Butthole Surfers, and I loved the flaming lips' 4 cd album jobby. I like this. Oh i doo you aknow/

N. Ron, Monday, 30 June 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

god. every fucking flaming lips cover song is SO BAD.

they did a nice cover of smog's "chosen one" on an EP about 10 years ago.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 30 June 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloodhound gang have a live cover of "Undone (the sweater song)" floating around on P2P where they play the weezer song on their guitars and ask the crowd to join in in singing, but when it's time to sing they start chanting "wu tang clan ain't nuthin' ta fuck wit'." It's quite funny.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sad that maura has not returned with opinions on the Dweezil Zappa + Ozzy Osbourne "Staying Alive" cover.

Scaredy Cat, Monday, 30 June 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my god the bloodhound gang are so much better than every other band mentioned on this thread its not even funny, thats brilliant

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the Bloodhound Gang are quite critically acclaimed, often hailed as influential and original. Oh I get it... you're follow up post will be "for me to poop on"? I would like to poop on the Bloodhound Gang.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt realize i had to like music thats critically acclaimed and hailed as influential and original!!! anyway surely having a straight synthpop number one hit in the 00s was very original!! moreso than anything the flaming lips have ever done

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

flaming lips formula for cover songs:

make the tempo really slow and make it sound overly cute. dont forget to FORCE that sappiness!

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

there are only a few songs in my life ive heard about and then made a point of actively avoiding and one of them is their 'ironic' kylie cover

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I don't agree with any of that, amazingly enough. It's funny how two people can see things so differently.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

christ i feel like i shooting fish in a barrel here but scaredy WHY should i care if the flaming lips are critically acclaimed and hailed as influential and original?? surely there are bands you dislike who fall into all these categories, god knows theres enough that i do...and do you think the bloodhound gang having a huge depeche mode-style novelty hit about fucking with monkey costumes was 'unoriginal'?

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

really im sorry i framed my first post in a way that insulted the flaming lips, i dont like them but i dont really know that much of their output except their last two albums (which i HATED and have had to hear much more than ive ever wanted to), i guess i just like the bloodhound gang is all

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kylie cover was brilliant, but really should've only been first verse and chorus, everything after that was unneccesary.

PS The Bloodhound Gang are catchy but not funny.

David Allen, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

chasey lain was catchy not funny but cmon you laughed at the bad touch admit it

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

No, just when you said they were "better," it seemed like a statement that might be backed with more than just a personal opinion. Also, I thought you were putting them down unnecessarily by comparing them to what I consider a truly lame band. I didn't realize you liked Bloodhound Gang. I sort of think of BG as "x-Howard-Stern-flunky in a band of session musicians from Mountain Dew and Bud Light commercials" Really, to me BG should be the soundtrack for that new TNN Network For Men.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah im sorry dude its just my opinion, i hadnt ever heard about that cover before so i wanted to comment on it but then i realized my post had nothing to do with the flaming lips!! i think people dont give the bloodhound gang enough credit for being great pop songwriters though, my god theres so many hooks

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, I actually do have that album and was actually considering getting the earlier one with "The Roof Is On Fire" for a time, but I wore the other one out so quick, I didn't think it would be worth the money. It might be about time to give it another listen...

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

can i ask what you like about the flaming lips??

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the baroque instrumentation

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the one thing ive ever possibly liked about them in theory would be the prog rock touches, but it still sounds awful to me, why would you want a cloying ironic version of prog when you could listen to STARSHIP TROOPER!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting sounds, melodies and harmonies with a variety of subject matter. Some is just goofy, some is interesting to think about. It's happy, it's sad, it's generally positive. IMO, they don't often take an obvious or lazy approach to writing music. They have a "sound" that has changed quite a bit over the years, but I find little that qualifies as a formula at all throughout their career other than some "weird sounds" and a "weird voice".

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So, where/when's this from

Samuel Bloch, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So, where/when's this from

Some radio show. It's listed on the FL website under "NEWS". I think if you click "latest" or "recent" news, it's like the 3rd listing from the top (might be lower on the list now).

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

flamin lips still use the midi violins and horns. i dont know how you people can listen to that shit.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know whether to be sad about trife disliking the last two Flaming Lips albums or enthused about the prospect of his luv of "synthpop" possibly opening the door to his joining me in the A.R.E. WEAPONS ARMY OF THE UNDEAD*

*undead meaning "not dead"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)
