The UK Top 40 Prediction League - Week One

Righto - basic rules are as follows -

Mr Swygart selects 10 new releases each week. Participants select where they end up in the top 40, or, indeed, if they actually will. Scoring runs like this:

10 points for a correct position
5 points for one position either side
1 point two positions either side

If participants don't think a pick will make the top 40, then they can predict 'Outside Top 40' which, if correct, score two points. If they manage to predict the exact position outside the top 40 where it enters, they get 15 points. There are no points for going either side of this position, though.

Bonus points are available by selecting which record is at a certain, randomly selected position in the following week's chart, e.g. #27. Getting that right earns 10 points.

Correctly predicting the number one single scores ten bonus points.

Also, cos of midweeks and such, all picks posted after midday on Tuesday will score only half points.

Hopefully those rules are understandable - only just come up with them, though, so if anyone has any complaints, etc., then I'm listening.

But now, the picks to predict for next week are:

BEYONCE KNOWLES - Crazy In Love
50 CENT & NATE DOGG - 21 Questions
SINEAD QUINN - What You Need Is
S CLUB 8 - Fool No More
LISA-MARIE PRESLEY - Lights Out
MIS-TEEQ - Can't Get It Back
PAUL VAN DYK - Nothing But You
LADYTRON - Evil
BRITISH SEA POWER - Carrion
BLACK BOX RECORDER - The School Song

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now quite tempted to sub in Delerium or Mario for Lisa-Marie Presley or Black Box Recorder... bugger. this is harder than I thought.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't listen to Radio 1 enough to have heard the records or to know whether they are being played, but hell I can make wild guesses and I like to encourage such nonsense games:

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Just realised, I've completely forgotten the random number, so, not entirely at random, it's:

#22

cos that's where In Da Club has been the past two weeks. Steve & Martin, feel free to pick whichever record you think will end up there.

And my picks:

BEYONCE KNOWLES - Crazy In Love - #3
50 CENT & NATE DOGG - 21 Questions - #1
SINEAD QUINN - What You Need Is - #9
S CLUB 8 - Fool No More - #4
LISA-MARIE PRESLEY - Lights Out - #29
MIS-TEEQ - Can't Get It Back - #7
PAUL VAN DYK - Nothing But You - #19
LADYTRON - Evil - #49
BRITISH SEA POWER - Carrion - #37
BLACK BOX RECORDER - The School Song - #40

And at #22 - Amy Studt.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, at #22 i'll go for Amy Studt as well ;)

when are Eminem, Madonna, Avril and Michelle branch's new singles out then?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

William this is good clean nerdy fun and if you can manage to co-ordinate scores and stuff this could become popular enough to become its own website or something, lets see how it goes i guess

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Michelle Branch was another one that got squeezed off because I feel the need to create some weird kind of karmic propulsion that gets BBR top 40 again. Actually, it was more or less a toss up between her and Lisa-Marie, and I decided to go with La Presley, cos she's more famous. Basically.

Madonna, Eminem AND Avril are all out on the 7th. With a lot of other things. As I've said elsewhere, the seventh of July will be a bloodbath...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 June 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

there should be a cut-off point for entering the comp each week - i suggest Wednesday midday, as by the end of the week people in the know may have a better idea of whats gonna be where.

This is FUN. Still really want Ladytron to go top 40, but now I also kind of DON'T.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm gonna buy 'Evil' probably, i might also buy 'The School Song'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I've already bought three of these singles, one of which was a 2CD set and I bought both. I'm hoping this is within the rules.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought the 'tron, BSP and BBR, thus utterly nixing any chance any of them had of the top 40. Also got the Clientele, putting them out of the running for the top 100 too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

buy singles? k?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I got BBR and Beyonce and both the Ladytron CDs. I don't see how this little venture can fail to single-handedly rejuvenate the singles market in this country.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Not yet...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Bring Me To Life is so great. Just thought I'd mention that cos it was just on the radio just now. Like.

Lunch ends in ten minutes time. If they're still binting on about the air conditioning when I get back then I may well come back here.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i have warmed to Evanescence a bit more - mainly cos the singer is dam cute. part of the ploy no doubt.

heard their other songs yet? more overblown radio friendly goth-metal pop no doubt.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't find the midweeks anywhere... we'll see if they come out tomorrow. Till I see them, all predictions still score full points.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yep! the evanescence album is pretty much the same, minus shouty guy, which is a good thing.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Grr... still can't see the midweeks, but I do know the position of one song. Not saying which, but Jacob's the only one to have guessed close to its actual position thus far...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a nice postcard from the makers of that record, as a purchase-incentive it has worked admirably.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i read Sinead Quinn as Sinead O Connor for some reason, hence the lower placing, gah

midweek position is not always too reliable - Blazin' Squad were supposedly 'number 1' this time last week weren't they?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but it'd take hell and high earth to keep Beyonce off number one this week, wouldn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Or 50 Cent.

Go 50! I think the teen luv for the mush-mouthed one will win out. Beyonce isn't on the radio enough yet...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce's got local radio on lockdown though. Fdysen may have the Radio 1 edge, but for what the kids are really going to buy, you have to listen to Northants 96.6- The Hot FM. Not for longer than five minutes though, because your head would begin to melt.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the tension mounts...

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 6 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

SOMETHING was new at number 40 but I just missed what, was it Ladytron WAS IT LADYTRON? oh GOD I don't think I can take the excitement, strokes all round by 7pm.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

First in - it's British Sea Power at #36! Fantastic in itself, but also cos it puts me in an early lead with five points, Dods and joni both getting one apiece. Magic owls...

Those who went for Ladytron or BBR inside the top 40 may be rather disappointed, I fear. #22 coming up soon though...

New at 40 - Foundation. Shite Northern house. Truly, there are no winners there...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

And in the race for #22, Tommi and Moloko are early fallers...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Fiddy Senn down to #23...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And is Lisa Marie Presley also a busted flush, I wonder...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

All in all, a fucking rubbish time for me to remember I was meant to put the dinner in at 5 o'clock...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And at #22... it's... DJ Sammy. Which was predicted by precisely no-one.

Still only one of the list gone with the top twenty getting ever closer... has Sinead Quinn stolen a march on everyone?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No she hasn't, as la Quinn flumps in at #19. Five for yer man Hetteson, one for Affectian, all still to play for with eight positions to be revealed...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo, 5 points!

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt get round to buying Ladytron or BBR in the end - woe...

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

10 for Jacob!

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Lisa-Marie at #16, and Jacob takes the lead as he gets it bang-on. 10 points sir. 5 points for Edward O, one for Mr Skidmore.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ashanti is rubbish. By contrast to Sinead Quinn, who is surprisingly very good.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

10 for James too.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Van Dyk in at #14, which is paydirt for James Mitchell, who gets 10. Affectian and EdO both pick up a single.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This is still the worst Paul van Dyk single in years. And is it the highest ever UK position for a song with norwegian lyrics?

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OCS new at #13!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Mis-Teeq #8, and that man Jacob is hitting stride with 10 off this, with Ed O in hot pursuit as he gets it bang on too. Lid, Affectian, Mitchell and me all get 5, Alex and Siegbran score 1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Fiddy Senn is #6 - Edward O hits the front with a vengeance! Stevem and Skidmore pick up five, Siegbran, Dods, Lid and Dom all get one.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

S Club 8 #4 - 10 more for Jacob, along with me and Alex. Five for Ed O, Mitchell and Lid, one for Dom, Jel & Martin.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And Beyonce's number one, so that's ten with ten bonus points for:

Martin Skidmore
Siegbran Hetteson
Billy Dods
James Mitchell
Lid
Affectian
Joni
Jel
Dom Passantino
Edward O
Alex In Doncaster

Five for Jacob & Stevem, and one for me. Bugger.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ladytron ended up at #44, which no-one picked. Black Box Recorder... didn't make the top 100. Best believe I'm in a seriously pissy mood right now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dinner now - full prediction league update to come later tonight.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I should get a bonus as my number 22 prediction was only 1 away.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 6 July 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel - umm, nope. You only score ten bonus points for guessing the correct record at the random position.

I think I'm also gonna scrap the two points for just predicting outside the top 40... it just doesn't seem to work, somehow.

Anyway - I've calculated the scores, so I'm going to start a new thread with them on.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Prediction League Week Two

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! A respectable showing for this middle-aged man who hadn't heard any of the records!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone else get lots of "please-buy-our-single-in-bulk-to-secure-a-top-40-placing-and-then-take-them-all-back-to-HMV-on-Monday-for-a-refund" emails from British Sea Power? I love British Sea Power.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the BSP CD singles were dirt cheap as well

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 July 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Van Dyk in at #14, which is paydirt for James Mitchell, who gets 10.

That is the greatest news I've ever heard. I truly am the world's only Van Dyk expert.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 7 July 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)
