I want to do a radio show of kraftwerk covers...
I know some of the obvious (and don't know some of the obvious)...
what do you know of?

There's the Senor Coconut album and the Trans Slovenia Express compilation for full albums and there's ton's of single tracks. Here's a couple that come to my mind that I have:

Souixie and the Banshees- Hall of Mirrors
ride - the model
luna - neon lights
terre thaemlitz - die roboter
lloyd cole - pocket calculator
dmx krew - a number of diff. tracks
balanescu quartet - hall of mirros / the model / neon lights / autobahn

I have a banjo cover of autobahn on a german(?) comp called l'age d'or...

who else? I know there's tons.

thanks much.

Big Black: The Model
Snakefinger: The Model

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Divine Comedy do a fine version of The Model and I believe have even attepted Trans Europe Express, although that may just be an unlikely but tempting rumour

Mark Davyd, Monday, 30 June 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Slipstream, "Computer Love"
OMD, "Neon Lights" (not very remarkable, that one)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Melt Banana - "Showroom Dummies"

Its about what you'd expect. Not bad.

original bgm, Monday, 30 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Trouble Funk - "Trans Europe Express" (well actually they retitled it "Trouble Funk Express" but it's a cover)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I do have the snakefinger version already...I never did hear Big Black's version.

I also have the slipstream version of "computer love"... I know I stuck that CD somewhere...

Did any of those wacky Japanese folks do any kraftwerk covers? I know Masaki Batoh did a Can cover (yoo doo right)...

French noise/metal band TREPONEM PAL did a cover of "Radioactivity" on this album....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Another French Band called Kat Onoma covered "Radioactivity" and Divine Comedy too.

Zoot Woman did "The model".

Sami (Sami), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Rammstein "Das Modell" is fantastic.

also:
Gorefest "Autobahn"

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cardigans have also done "Das Model". It's off their last single.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a mad version of the robots on a cassette my old flatmate brought back from morocco.
there was a poor remix / tribute style album out in 1990 ish. can't remember anything about it, that was how remarkable it was.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

stirmonster, Monday, 30 June 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh! no you don't, you already have it. sorry.

stirmonster, Monday, 30 June 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

er, Terrorvision covered 'The Model' too but you really don't want to be playing that. Just make sure you've got BOTH Balansecu covers of 'The Model' - there's the straight instrumental on the album and there's a version with Eno playing annoying synths and Byrne crooning over it.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark did Neon Lights on their album Sugar Tax. I think the Simple Minds did that one too on their recent cover album, but I didn't dare to check more of that one out after hearing their Echo & the Bunnymen's Bring On The Dancing Horses cover.

Tijn, Monday, 30 June 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is it that almost everyone does "the model" or "the robots"? kraftwerk did more than that.

I only have the album version for Balanescu... the other sounds interesting. I didn't find it on a soulseek search. I'll keep trying.

gorefest. that sounds pleasant. crisp sunny day on a splatterfest autobahn trip.

I saw mention of the TREPONEM PAL cover of "radioactivity" on a covers list, but couldn't find it on soulseek.

nick ring (nick ring), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They've pretty much slipped from view in the past few years. Look'em up on Allmusic.com. They're pretty much growly scowly frenchmen who specialize in grinding, largely tuneless noise.

>Did any of those wacky Japanese folks do any kraftwerk covers? I >know Masaki Batoh did a Can cover (yoo doo right)...

Hikashu, Makigami Koichi's old outfit, covered "The Model"

summerslastsound, Monday, 30 June 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember the Athens, GA band Love Tractor doing a very nice version of "Neon Lights".

Bob McCarthy (Hecklerspray), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Love Tractor also did a fine cover of Pete Shelley's "Homosapien," for what it's worth.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Gorefest one is hilarious. It starts with their downtuned guitars simulating a car revving up, and Jan-Chris goes all growly "Au...to...baaaaaaahhhhhnnnnn". If you're interested, I'm sharing it on Soulseek (there's no chance in hell you're ever going to find the original compilation it was on).

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

SeƱor Coconut's El Baile Aleman is all Kraftwerk covers.

dekone, Monday, 30 June 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tugboat do a cover of "antenna". link here

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 30 June 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I know there's too many "Model" covers already, but if you have to pick one, go for Tremolo Beer Gut's surf-rockabilly version. Oh my GOODness.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 30 June 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

'The Model' has been mentioned, but the Divine Comedy also did Radioactivity.

Alexis (Alexis), Monday, 30 June 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

aqua vista have also done a surfbilly version of The Model. the song seems to lend itself to such a treatment.

Hikashu - The Model
Zoot Woman - The Model

T. Weiss (Timmy), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

also Buffalo Daughter do a really nice cover of "Autobahn."

T. Weiss (Timmy), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find any info about BD doing "autobahn", but I did find Krafty Moves: Tribute to Kraftwerk ... don't really know any of the bands, but is it the same P.O.D.?

And, in looking for the Tremelo Beer Gut cover, I found this page ... there's some interesting prospects on there..
Gary Lucas does autobahn?
Beck does pocket calculator?
the Ukranians do radioactivity?
zeni geva does the model?

nick ring (nick ring), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the divine comedy radioactivity cover is the b-side to national express
its quite good,i saw them do it live and it was fucking brilliant

robin (robin), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the balanescu quartet version of the model so much-been listening to it a lot recently

robin (robin), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it's japanese, but has lots

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

taken from the above link:
Trio Fratres - The classic accordion trio in Finland. Five out of the 9 tracks are the covers of Kraftwerk. Three tracks, "Pocket Calculator""Computer Love"" The Robots", have followed "The Mix" version fundamentally, and an accordion and vocorder have ridden on the programmed percussion. Vocal is quite flat compared to the orginal.
"Model" & " Transistor" of the second half are arranged to the instrumental of an accordion trio.

kraftwerk on accordion? now, that has to be good.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream's Autobahn 66, while nominally an original composition, might as well be a Kraftwerk cover!

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Also search the fictional band Autobahn (I think) from The Big Lebowski. I seem to remember you can hear some of their songs in the background of some scenes, so I guess they might appear on the soundtrack.

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

A cover of a Kraftwerk cover:

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah... the Trio Fratres accordian versions really piqued my interest. Couldn't find it anywhere online, though.

If anyone can find 'em, I'd love to hear them.

Oh man. that page frenchbloke found has many tribute comps on it. dunno what kind of luck I'll have in finding them, but we'll see...

nick ring (nick ring), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Trio Fratres Homepage

sadly no downloads.

they do a fine range in cover versions. hmmm.

i'll have a browse round winmx later on - soulseek coming up blank.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream's Autobahn 66, while nominally an original composition, might as well be a Kraftwerk cover!

along those lines, don't forget David Bowie's "V-2 Schneider"!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! No one's said little-known mid-90s space-rockers Octopus's version of "Neon Lights" yet. Not surprised as it was a b-side. But it was a good track!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Buffalo Daughter cover is on a tribute album called Musique Non Stop. Check slsk for the cover.
