Taking Sides: Night Ranger or Giuffria?

They say there isn't a band, no matter how ass, that someone on ILM won't admit to liking. Well, it's time to put that maxim to the test.

I don't think I wanna know the answers this thread will generate. But who here knows which of these bands contains a member of a band that Frank Zappa made fun of in one of his songs?

That would be Greg Giuffria who used to be in Angel whose guitarist was the very same Punky Meadows ("I wish my guitar had a cunt") of "Punky's Whips" fame!

Oh, and both bands are complete, complete, complete ass. And this is from someone who owns two Loverboy albums

Actually Giuffria was good one one thing - the lead singer (who inexplicably wanted the world to know his middle name was 'Glen') saying "I just don't look good in short hair!" Begging the question, of course, of what he imagined himself to look like with that de rigeur poodle mop.

dave: WOW you know a lot about Giuffria.

I've never even heard of Giuffria. "You Can Still Rock In America" is pretty good and probably deserves an updated version, "Sister Christian" is the American Bohemian Rhapsody, and the lyrics to "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" are like "I Want It That Way" meets Turbonegro.

if it's fair enough to equate guiffra with its longer-lived progenitor, angel, then i have to split the hair the same way dave is: angel have redeeming features, for sure. part of the mysterious cassablanca records mystery, they wrote some of the songs redd kross taught us. "wild and hot" was the one i was thrashing earlier in the year, one of a least a couple of great, great, sub-kiss proto l.a. hair metal moments scattered through the lps i've checked out. and then there's that punky meadows quotation about wanting to be able to fuck his guitar while playing it, already mentioned (made famous by the 'worst of rock'n'roll' book, i assume?)... i'm not about to risk a search and destroy thread on angel, but if dave is still reading, maybe he has an opinion?

Wow. This is the first time ever that I've heard of Giuffria since their one hit dropped off Casey Kasem's countdown in 1985. "Sister Christian" gets all the attention 'cause of Boogie Nights, but "Sentimental Street" and "Goodbye" are actually way prettier.

Wow, seeing this thread is weird. When I was in L.A. last week, I walked into a t-shirt store, and saw a Giuffria t-shirt hanging up there. I pointed this out to my friend, and said "Remember them?!" First time we had even thought about them in ten years. That being said, I don't really remember any of their songs.

Night Ranger, however, had some great songs. Sorry, but it's true. Their best, "Goodbye", is a crackling bit of lighter-waving AOR, and "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" has an outstanding solo tradeoff. "Sister Christian" is another great anthem, and I remember "Sing Me Away" as a good tune (though haven't heard it in ages).
