Who's the tallest person in music?

Angus Andrew from the Liars and Big Rock from Heltah Skeltah are both in the 6'6" range. Thurston Moore is 6'7". I've heard that Krist Novoselic is 6'8". Is anyone taller?

And what's the relationship between height and performance? Are taller performers likely to be more extroverted?

Him from Lift To Experience is apparently in the seven-foot range.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Novoselic is a total sideman, and Thurston Moore sort of has a goofy schtick onstage. But Andrew and Rock are both theatrical performers; both of them use their height to intimidate or at least loom.

Cex is about 6'2", but he plays shows standing in the audience nowadays and wears ridiculous Hot Topic platforms that add about three inches. The point seems to be to tower over the audience.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of the advance press about the Liars said Andrew was seven feet tall. I'm just shy of seven feet, and I thought all that noise was borderline offensive. Dude is plainly not seven feet tall.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy that wears the bucket to become Buckethead is like 6'8". Then he puts on the bucket!

I'm 6'4", and I often feel weird kinda towering over audiences, so I spend a lot of time during our shows kinda crouched down or something.

Related question: should I be in a band?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Him really seven feet tall, William? Or is that just hype like with Angus? And who's Lift to Experience?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Gene Simmons is tall....but he wears those ridiculous boots, so who is to say?

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's not forget Joey Ramone! He looked even taller than his 6'6" frame standing next to Tommy Ramone, possibly the shortest man in punk.

Isn't Sly Stone like 6'6"?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

to answer your question, Tom, yes, you should be in a band, and you should be the drummer, so that you're always sitting down and noone can tell how tall you are until they see you walking around, and realize you weren't standing behind the kit. that would be kind of a fun mindfuck for people.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Shaq is still the frontrunner.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the two frontpeople in my drummer's other band are both at least 6'6". hilariously the other guitarist is about 5'3" so it makes for a rather bizarre spectacle on stage.

I don't think it was official until the last couple of weeks. Putting the boot the lead singer sent him on EBay was classic.

johnboy, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

... and I know exactly what John (Duran Duran) Taylor's height is, too. Not surprisingly enough. It's 6'2". Simon LeBon is about that same height, too. This is interesting considering how this means Duran Duran represent all the various types of heights out there. Nick Rhodes is only about 5'7" tall (I'm 5'8" tall and I remember being about one inch taller than he was), and Warren Cuccurullo is only about 5'5" tall or so (I know I tower over him). Wes Wehmiller, who was the bassist in their touring band when John wasn't a member, was fairly tall -- maybe about 6' tall. Joe Travers, who was their touring band's drummer, is about my height, i.e. 5'8". Andy Taylor looks to be a good three inches shorter than Nick Rhodes, so a little simple math means he's about 5'4" tall (unless he magically grew during his thirties). And I have no idea how tall Roger Taylor actually is; I will find out next year, though, as I AM going to as many of Duran Duran's 2004 live shows in the U.S. as possible.

Thus concludes another episode of "My, Dee is a saddo Duran Duran fan". Tune in next week when I give you the birth weights of all the band members! (kidding....)
