mick hall (mick hall), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

.. of the ones you saw I mean!

mick hall (mick hall), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't really compare Primal Scream and 2manydjs. They were both great.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me a D!

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

There were loads of highlights...

Polyphonic Spree
Flaming Lips
Jacques le Cont
Dave Gahan
Alison Moyet
Radiohead

worst?
Electric 6 - Gay Bar? Fuck off.

RUSS T, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Love's Forever Changes++ defined my weekend for me. All the more impressive as I was feeling totally washed out just beforehand and not up for anything. Real magic.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me an Arkness!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

radiohead, i'm afraid.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

radiohead seemed to do things a bit too much by the book didnt they? (judging by what i saw on TV) if true, was this a problem for anyone?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

certainly not for me. it never occurred to me that it was in any way over-formal or just a replica of a recording. visceral's a lame word but it's quite appropriate here. their sound was really cutting and sharp and thom's voice amazingly clear, powerful and controlled. he seemed to be putting absolutely his all into it.

mick hall (mick hall), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

From what I recall Radiohead didn't sound THAT much like the record - especially The Gloaming, Climbing Up The Walls, Talkshow Host and all the Kid A stuff, all of which were gloriously fucked with.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, the darkness are just spinal tap, aren't they?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacques Lu Cont, Soulwax, the Rapture

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacques le Cont WAS awesome... was that his mix of Madonna's Hollywood he played? It was FANTASTIC.

russ t, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

he has remixed that so i'm sure it was

The Darkness = Spinal Tap + Muse/Queen i figure

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was the Felix Da Housecat mix Russ, though maybe I am wrong?

I had that "hollywood, hollywood" part banging round my head all night. I can't remember dancing so vigorously at any set before.

I also loved a track he played which sounded like one of his own and had that "living, in a magazine" vocal looped through it over and over. He's easily my favourite DJ these days, and one of my fave producers to boot.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd venture a guess that it's Living in a Magazine by Zoot Woman(IE him)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

cheers Andrew.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

..that one, too, was great - and like you I couldn't get that bit out of my head all night either!

He's a brilliant DJ, I agree.

Sunday was well disappointing in the Dance Tent I thought, though - really nothing there I wanted to see (Buena Vista Social Club?!) and the crowd seemed to have gotten nastier that night, too, so we moved swiftly on.

russ t, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

how were Goldfrapp russ? mad theremin/hot suspenders action i hope..

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah in some ways all the house acts on friday and saturday left a void, made it very difficult to find something to dance to if you're like me.

I did go to the Radio 1 stage and stumbled across Greg Vickers and Tribal Gathering playing really old acid house music, it was great.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was the really old guy who played with the Rapture?

ssean, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That must have been the legendary Bez. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Flips!

Evan (Evan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve -
missed Goldfrapp! A mate of mine went and said it was the highlight.... Alison in thigh high patent boots, mini skirt and German Nazi-esque leather cap. Fox that she is.
Moloko were brilliant, too, by all accounts - 'Time is now' went on for about 10 minutes, with her writhing all over the high speakers. Crowd went ballistic apparently.
Other stiuff that was great.... Layo and Bushwacka on the Radio 1 stage were amazing... in fact, that Radio 1 stage was pretty great throughout.

russ t, Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

brendan benson eh? his record is rather good i must say

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Look out for his first called One Mississippi. It's rather good too. Also look out for anything by Jason Falkner cause he co-wrote half of both those BB albums.

mms (mms), Thursday, 3 July 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

on topic of Brendan Benson, he's playing an acoustic set at Ronnie Scott's this Sunday that must be worth seeing.

Layo & Bushwacka fans should check em out at the End this Saturday. Theirs is a first-sat-of the month type residency and both times I've seen them it's been amazing. They take turns and play all night long, cross-fading like motherfuckers. For dance music fans who don't know L&B, it's a must see.

mick hall (mick hall), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't L&B's DJ sets notoriously shit though?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

none that I've heard.

russ t, Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

assuming it would feature tracks along the lines of 'Love Story' and 'Deep South', i can imagine L&B dj sets being very good indeed.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard squarepusher was amazing. anyone see him?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

flaming lips r.e.m. soulwax

also : msp erol radiohead

didn't like him but everyone else did award : jimmy cliff

piscesboy, Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like Cliff, either - what a nasty selection of tracks he played - I went off for a kip in the tent.

russ t, Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it was all a bit 'here comes the lilt man'.

piscesboy, Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

*sound of Mark Lamarr exploding*

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

did you see Moloko or Goldfrapp? All who did reckoned these were the 2 highlights? I... didn't.

russ t, Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldfrapp were pretty good, but not the best band at Glastonbury. that honour has to go to Primal Scream.

Kings of Leon or John Otway or Leningrad Cowboys were the best band I'd never seen before.

Inspieral Carpets were the best reformed band.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 3 July 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

radiohead mp3s. everything before hail sounds like prog rub to my ears...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 3 July 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Please everyone stop reminding of Radiohead. You're harshing my buzz.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 3 July 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Harmar Superstar (aka Ron Jeremy) was hilarious ..

'Give it up for us! We're fucking awesome!'

mick hall (mick hall), Friday, 4 July 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

gringo ska...gringo ska...gringo ska...gringo ska

best band, best name, foxiest bassist, they win, they win!

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 4 July 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be wary of Layo and Bushwacka, honest to god last year they did the Radio 1 stage and it was the worst most boring and devoid of fun DJ set I've ever seen. They were worse than Digweed at his wankiest, I was high as hell and I still had a dreadful time.

I don't think I'll ever give them a second chance after that.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Band: Junior Senior

Best DJ set: 2 many DJs

Goldfrapp and Moloko I caught bits of and both seemed OK to me but hardly highlights.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 4 July 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, Rodrigo y Gabriella were the best band I'd never seen before. there are two of them and they play acoustic guitars.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 4 July 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

couldn't find a particularly apt thread to revive

but that version of 'Bulletproof' La Roux just did on BBC2/online is much better than the version at #1

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 28 June 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

i quite liked that song! about a minute later some twat took us on a tour of the dance village and she popped up for an instant, coming off like a minor character from nathan barley, so i'll not go too far just yet

bloody yeah yeah yeahs :(
