Money Mark is prob'ly my favorite Beastie Boy! Ha!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a thread where we name everybody who's been called "the 4th Beastie"?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It is. Is it a sample?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. Well, actually yes and no. It's a loop of a riff that Money Mark played on organ.

This thread prompted by my catching one of my decidedly not-too-funky coworkers air-keyboarding to this riff and "getting funky".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably my fave Beastie Boys song.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way they scream and carry on like drunk frat boys

Farmer Al (King Kobra), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's the shit. Of course I still prefer any of the samples used in "Shake Your Rump.

Chesnick, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Truth be told, "So Whatcha Want?" is the only Beastie Boys song I actually liked (and I liked it a lot, too). The rest of the songs I heard from them I felt made them sound like whiny adolescents, but this one was a fun party-style song that I enjoyed greatly Way Back When (*heh*). It's probably because of the organ in it. Hm.

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The real kicker is the WHOMP (doonk) BA DOMP anchor of the whole beat, and the song the sample comes from -- the Southside Movement's '75 remake of their own hit "I've Been Watching You" -- is the sort of thing that makes me want to start a cult based entirely around BASS. We could be called BASSTRONAUTS. Assuming Sun Ra hasn't beaten me to it. Or some awful no-hit-wonder ghettotech wannabe click from Vermont.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 3 July 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it. It is funk for people who Hate Funk. Therefore, it is greatness. So there.

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the beat was the umpteenth beastie use of When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin?

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people... hate funk?

*faints*

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

" rello. ry rame ris rate. rie rate funk. runk rucks. "

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"WHOMP (doonk) BA DOMP"

This is obviously a great groove if I caught myself bobbing my head to Nate's onomatopoeiafication of it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The beat is fly but GAWD KILL THE VOICES KELL THEM STONE DEAD HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the voices, they're so dorky white boy, it's like they're telling me directly, "It's okay, you too can have the funk one day, if you dream it, you can be it!"

David Allen, Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"don't dream it --beee-eee itttt...."
