Willie Colon will be performing on the Parkway in Philadelphia, but he's on the same bill as Peter Frampton. That's a bit insulting, really. I hope I don't have to wait through Frampton and others before I get to see Willie Colon.

Anything interesting happening elsewhere?

all I have to do to get myself to laugh is just imagine the phrase "highway to the danger zone" in my head; it works EVERY TIME.

My band is playing a gig on the 4th; I hope I don't miss something hella cool cuz of it.

Ryan Adams is playing in Battery Park. Woo-hoo. "Summer of '69"! (I know, old joke -- but it still pisses him off...)

I'll be playing on Friday at Club 85, Whinbush Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire if anyone's up for going. Entrance is next to nothing and there's gonna be some great styles going down :-)

The music of Mali, Scotland and Appalachia is being featured at the Smithsonian's annual Folklife Festival(June 25th to July 6th) on the mall between the US capitol and the Washington Monument. Lots of great Malian music for free to be enjoyed by music fans and your average US Capital tourist alike. Oumou Sangare was there on June 29th, Salif Keita on the 2nd and Ali Farka Toure will be there on the 5th. I think on the 4th will be lesser known artists like Neba Solo and Tartit. The Appalachian program includes Carter Family tributes and obscure blues. Don't know much about the Scottish program. I think Dolly Parton may be performing at the Monument grounds before the fireworks.

*I just checked him out on allmusic.com

In Brooklyn there is a rooftop show on the Domino Sugar Factory with a bunch of psych bands, Dead Meadow, Secret Machines. It's $10, though. I think it will be cool to hear the music and see the fireworks together.

as far as I can tell, nothing going on in Saskatchewan.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

In Detroit, there's an event called Tastefest featuring foods from local restaurants and a bunch of musical performances. Last night's highlights were Wilco and Carl Craig, today's are DJ Magda and Richie Hawtin, and tomorrow Los Lobos and the Dirtbombs are playing. Hurray for free concerts!

In Los Angeles, The Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra is playing on the 5th, opening the Grand Performances series.

"The 2003 season opens with a return engagement by Los Angeles’ own wildly creative 60-piece Dakah Hip Hop Symphony Orchestra. Principal composer, conductor and baritone saxophonist, Geoff “GG” Gallegos will unveil world premiere works commissioned by Grand Performances. Join us for an evening of progressive genre blending, where the spirits of past jazz giants such as Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington will fuse effortlessly with hip hop, European classical music, turntables, singers, MCs and free jazz."
