Fooled By the Band name

I was utterly shocked when I heard Jackie-o Motherfucker. Expecting to be bludgeoned a bit in the Skullflower/Comets On Fire spirit, I was surprised to find a lovely, only semi-noisy band with a drone penchant, more akin to Kinski. Took some attitude adjustment. Now I really dig them. Vomit Launch wasn't the hardcore punk I expected from the name either. Any other examples?

I'm not sure what I expected The Negro Problem to sound like, but they sure as shit didn't sound like that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a death metal band called Dew-Scented who are totally ferocious, but their name is not exactly intimidating.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a pretty obvious answer, but I was surprised the first time I heard Fuck.

Ben Boyer, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sun City Girls. They don't sound like girls at all!

ok serious answers:
Supreme Dicks
Disco Inferno
Destroyer
Unrest

I think we did a thread like this already, but:

Joy Division

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Guided by Voices

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCKING ...TRAIL OF THE DEAD.

I thought they would sound rough and tough and killer, but they just sound like a bunch of limp-wristed college pussies. I wanted to beat the shit out of them.

no homophobia implied by this post

Farmer Al (King Kobra), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

10,000 Maniacs

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought notwist would be a nu-metal band.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i expected outrageous cherry to be hardcore for some reason

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I deliberately didn't listen to Modest Mouse for years because I thought they would sound like a lame Belle and Sebastian--being "modest" mice and all.

Alexis (Alexis), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty Girls Make Graves aren't clove-smokin' anglophillic goths at all, I was surprised to learn, but rather shouty emo types.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Taproot" sounds like they should be a jam band.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Future Sound of London. I mean, all their songs sound dated.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i expected The Bandits to be less like the Coral and more like the Beatings. i was disappointed.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the Thrills would sound like another one of them boring NME shoutrock bands but instead they sound like one of those boring NME Badly Drawn Boy ripoffs.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 July 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Thrills are the single most innapropriately named band in music history, and not in a 'good' way either.

dave q, Thursday, 3 July 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana. Sounds nothing like it.

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"whitehouse"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

All Natural. With a name like that and a record cover like this, I wasn't expecting a hip hop crew.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Atomic Kitten. They had to be buzzsaw micro-punks subverting the charts with their anarcho-pop. They weren't.

Kim Tortoise, Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Amy Studt. I was expecting late 90s style lightweight poorly lyriced trance. I got early 00s style lightweight poorly lyriced angst-pop.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually expected Pavement to be really heavy because of the name. I was surprised and fell in love when I first heard Slanted and Enchanted.
Does anyone remember that tv commercial for Best Buy I think where there's this guy listing all the bands he likes why he's playing pool and he says, "I listen to Pavement. I listen to Primus." It was so annoying.

Magic City (ano ano), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

god i love that kind of memory of a stupid commercial! thanks for reminding me of it. that guy = matt pinfield's college days

mig, Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Rotting Christ. Worked fairly well when they were just a primitive death/black metal band, but when they decided to turn into a sensitive gothrock troupe, their name didn't exactly pull the expected hordes of goths in.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Digital Underground
Jurassic 5 (actually 6 young fellows)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Calla - that name screamed nu-metal to me.
Ex-Models - sounded electroclash
Heaven 17 - I thought they were riot-grrl, for some reason

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Jingle Cats

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Excuse 17 - I thought they were new-wave, for some reason

ddd (ddd), Thursday, 3 July 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben Folds Five IS THREE PEOPLE!

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 3 July 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Grateful Dead-- absolutely shocked and disappointed as a zit-faced metalhead.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Friday, 4 July 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Evanescence. I thought they'd sound like En Vogue, SWV, or Destiny's Child and have a revolving door of singers.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 4 July 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

radio 4. that name is nearly invisible for me, much as the words THE, LIKE, and AND.

and British Sea Power seemed as if it would do sea shanties.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Friday, 4 July 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Rotting Christ went sensitive?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 4 July 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

june and the exit wounds

rarr, Friday, 4 July 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Horace already said it, but Joy Division is my pick.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 7 August 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno what i was expecting from the Cherry Poppin' Daddies

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)
