Food in Song

Who has made the most interesting use of mentioning food in a song? And by intersting, I'm hoping to get choices that, at first glance would seem awkward, but somehow fit perfectly.

The best one I can think of so far is the Ramones from "I Just Wanna Have Something to do":
Hanging out on 2nd Avenue
eating chicken vindaloo

Others that do a great job include Dean Wareham, in any incarnation, and The Mountain Goats, whose characters seem to love exotic fruits.

"your tricks with fruit were kinda cute / I bet you keep your pussy clean"

Are you excluding the Weird Al Yankovich catalog?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There was an old (rather stupid) rap song by Craig Mack with the lyric "Just like a piece of sizzline, I fit inside your stomach with the extra crisp between". I always found it funny, just because sizzline is such an obscure food.

Chesnick, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I thinking avoiding the easy novelty songs is probably for the best, which would eliminate (almost) all Weird Al songs.

What's the name of that Craig Mack song? Sizzline is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for.

"Squeeze Me Macaroni" by Mr.Bungle is RIFE with foodstuff references.

"Bread & Butter" by the Newbeats (later covered by Devo).

"Eaten By Her Own Dinner" by Robyn Hitchcock

"Our love is like a sausage / Rotting in the backseat of my Corolla / The stench so sweet / It reminds me of RC Cola"

- Overpass, "R.C. Kola"

(I believe I've posted this lyric before)

The barkeep in Nick Cave's "Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane" has "a face like boiled meat."

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That boiled meat one is also one of my all time favorite 'food' references.

Yoko Ono also has a line about going to Chinatown for 'noodows' in "Winter Friend", but I'm pretty sure she means 'noodles'.

Sloan Kohler, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope this thread doesn't lapse into "name any old lyric about food"...

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The barkeep in Nick Cave's "Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane" has "a face like boiled meat."

Compare with Blue Oyster Cult's "Their eyes have turned the color of frozen meat." (from "Joan Crawford")

There is a song by I think Jonathan Richman where he promises "I'l be your breakfast, I'll be your dinner, you won't go hungry, you won't get thinner" or something to that effect. Its on a mix tape I was given so I have no clue the exatct details, but if its not Jonathan its a good replica.

Sloan name drop a resturant in Halifax in The Marquee & The Moon. Well its a lounge if you wanna get fussy called Hell directly below Halifax's biggest bar, The Marquee. Its known for its goth-lite decor and crowd and for having Hell's Kitchen, probably the best food served in any club that size (Toronto folk can compare it to The Opera House). The line is that "The clientele can go to Hell, if they wann get in for free" since Hell rarely has a cover charge.

"I'l be your breakfast, I'll be your dinner, you won't go hungry, you won't get thinner"

the jazz butcher-hungarian love song

-she just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
-i got some groceries, some peanut butter, to last a couple of days
-the sun's not yellow, it's chicken

mig, Thursday, 3 July 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think my favorite is low's "peanut butter toast and american bandstand." It's delicious, and it was on a comp put out by a label called gourmandizer, which also sounds very foodish.

Christ... some Canadian band - can any of the Canadians here tell me who they are? "No more bread and butter, no more pizza and beer, no more gooey pasta, no more baked alaska..." I have no idea anything more about the song, but my Canadian uncle used to sing it at me when he called me fat.

Merle Travis' "I Like My Chicken Frying Size" is a tried and true gal=chicken that even R. Kelly could 'get behind'.

abeta, Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles' "Savoy Truffle" . . . a whole song about candy and tooth decay.

Damn! Alex in NYC beating Nickalicious to "Squeeze Me Macaroni" ref SHOCKAH!

I love this one line in Fishbone's "Pressure" near the end where Angelo's just going the fuck off and he's like "PRESH-AH! like when ya asshole's tight-ah! like when ya eat too much PORK, ya get ARGH!". I fucking love that song so much.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Waits - Ice Cream Man / Grapefruit Moon / Eggs & Sausage (from the album Nighthawks At The Diner of course) / Pasties & G-String (no, I know he didn't mean that sort of pasties really) / Bad Liver & A Broken Heart (yes, I'm just being silly now)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Street Band (featuring a very young Paul Young) - Toast

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ween's got a shitload of lyrics with food,
for example, 'roses are free':
"Eat plenty of lasagna 'til you know
that you've had your fill
Resist all the urges that make you wanna
go out and kill"

and then it goes on about pumpkins and pie.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Choppin' Broccoli" Dana Carvey, for some reason I still hold on to that sketch as being hilarious the first time I saw it. Saw it a while back in rerun and barely smiled. But the memory is still funny.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ... some Canadian band - can any of the Canadians here tell me who they are? "No more bread and butter, no more pizza and beer, no more gooey pasta, no more baked alaska..."

Im pretty sure The Bonaduces have baked alaskas in a song but your uncle wouldn't be singing them now would he.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

More Ween food-y goodness:

"Pollo Asada"
"Pork Roll Egg & Cheese"
"Bananas & Blow"
"Where'd the Cheese Go?"
...not to mention they have an album titled Chocolate and Cheese!

"Sometimes when it's late and I'm a little bit hungry I heat
