okay, so i'm housesitting for the next two weeks, and these people have a huge tv with cable and tivo and the whole nine yards, so i'm overdosing a bit on the old video channels...

radiohead - "there there" (yeah yeah, it just taps into all those piano magic/brothers quay/liquid television stereotypes that we should all be "over" by now, but as far as post-bjorkian whimsy goes, this is tops. i'm slowly warming to the song too.)

bubba sparxxx - "deliverance" (just great, top to bottom. timbaland miming the blues on a battered acoustic, an extended o-brother/prison break motif, top chorus.)

bonecrusher - "never scared" (50 foot tall afro'd man-monster terrorizes downtown. "do you know what we call it when people think that black people don't know they are being funny? we call it racism.")

r kelly - "snake (rmx)" (quasi-racist hilarity ensues when our man r takes the arabian/middle eastern/indian vibe in this here modern hip-hop to it's illlogical conclusion. sword fighting, ladies in veils and bikinis [that's some confused islam, there], and of course, desert hummer driving. also, i think i'm hallucinating every time he breaks into a bit of "ring the alarm". points deducted for cutting the "two gorillas" line.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, also:

sean paul - "like glue" (the fact that the majority of the dancers in this video are men and the assembled throngs appear to be having FUN in it - remember that? - makes me happier than it should, saying more about the sorry state of current mtv then anything else.)

bottom 5:

evanescence - "bring me to life"
cold - "stupid girl"
that pod matrix sndtrk one (song's pretty good though)
that godawful deftones single
linkin park - "faint" (cop out live perfomance thing)

did anyone else notice how much beyonce looks like j.lo in the "crazy in love" video??

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the deftones single is not godawful.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

radiohead - "there there" (yeah yeah, it just taps into all those piano magic/brothers quay/liquid television stereotypes that we should all be "over" by now, but as far as post-bjorkian whimsy goes, this is tops. i'm slowly warming to the song too.)

haven't seen the video yet, but i like the song... nice take on achtung baby.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

blech. also, yr men charlotte are even ickier bad than i remember them. the plethora of scrawny post-emo git-pop bands with shrunken thrift store t's and spindly arms (coughcough) makes me want to retch. also, powerman 5000.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

what jess said

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate how people look too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Charlotte reminded me that people need to look like they deserve their tattoos or else they look stupid. And bands that do songs about how girls are dumb should just admit that that's what they think and not try to pretend that they think boys are dumb too when it's clear that they don't believe that.

Oh, and the Frankie J video is dope too, because the girl is so beautiful and Frankie is soooo tortured as he plays his piano and they keep missing eye contact so you think maybe they'll get together as long as they see each other...and then that devastating ending with the elevator....

jesus what's wrong with me that this video makes me incredibly sad

Neudonym, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

gay bar is the best video now obv

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course anything will Kelly O in

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Four-way tie for first:

1. Bonecrusher
1. Bonecrusher
1. Bonecrusher
1. Bonecrusher

I wouldn't know the cellar dwellers -- the channels involuntarily flip around whenever a guitar comes into view -- though "Snake" would probably be near the bottom.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

No one should ever be over the Bros. Quay.

Dan I., Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

both Frankie J and Jaheim videos crack me up endlessly. If Good Charlotte ever releases their awesome power ballad "Say Anything" I hope they squint really hard and reach their hand out to the camera while buckling over.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

that should be if they ever release a video for that song. They might, being 4 videos into an album and still tops on TRL.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the bonecrusher remix video is better but Ginuwine's "Those Jeans" roolz all. It takes the "he's emoting so much... over ASS" concept to its fantastic extreme. I hope the rest of bubba's videos finish the plot of o brother.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Queens of the Stone Age's "Go with the Flow" that has some cool animation. It looks like an animated version of one of Frank Kozik's posters.

earlnash, Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to the folks' place for a couple days tomorrow and I can not wait for the video action. MuchMusic take me away.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 3 July 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The video for Good Charlotte's "Anthem" depresses me sooo much. Never has the "punk rock uniform" been so trotted out like the little cliche that it sadly has become.

Sorry, Anthony.

If it's any consolation, the video for the forthcoming Killing Joke single, "Loose Cannon" is absolutely, categorically, indefensibly unwatchable. The band do not appear in it. Rather imagine the video for D'Angelo's "Untitled", only he's "body-rockin'". I WISH I was joking. I'm not. It's tragic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 July 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second the "Like Glue." It reminds me of Kingston. WAAAH!!!

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 3 July 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenna's "Freetime" video is pretty entertaining

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 3 July 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Anthem" is leagues better than "Girls & Boys", but this is in no way an endorsement of Good Charlotte. All of Anthony's 'but they're so popular how can they not be great' boosterism is admirable, but that doesn't really mean they're great, or that we are idiots for NOT bowing before the lord god TRL

and Frankie J roxx his tats are better

Neudonym, Thursday, 3 July 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Junior Senior's "Move Your Feet" video. If you haven't seen it, you just don't know.

Chesnick, Thursday, 3 July 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I agre with the Junior Senior vote.

Plus, I like the the bit in the Igniton (Remix) video where R Kelly's head rotates and shows off his crazy hair

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Junior Senior's 'Boy Meets Girl' is almost as brilliant as 'Move Your Feet' tho i dont know if its coming out as a single or what

my favourites at the moment are Roy Davis Jr's 'Rock Shock' and Athlete's 'You Got The Style' but they're both a year old or so now

Lacquer's 'Behind' is very good - road trip round America sped up to somewhere between the speed of sound and light - very nice

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

worst: Madonna 'Hollywood' - give it a rest luv

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's odd, Beyonce doesn't look like herself at all in large parts of the new vid, may just be a hair style change. My fave just now is definitely Gay Bar, my enjoyment of the song is definitely based on me listening to it whilst watching the video.

I just got Freeview but my god the 2 vid channels on there only play the same few songs, it's so dull. You'd think there would be space for at a least a little bit more variety otherwise what's the point in having 2 seperate channels. The only saving grace was that I managed to catch the new Darkness video at one point. Tight fitting spandex jump suits slit to the waist are always the thing to wear whilst riding a horse.

mms (mms), Thursday, 3 July 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Benny Benassi "Satisfaction" (power tool commercial with lots and lots of drilling)
Tiga "Hot In Herre" (those puppets!)
Klea "Tic Toc" (great animation! also features a shark serving cocktails)
Mint Royale "Sexiest Man In Jamaica" (rabbit puppets)
Ugress "Loungemeister" (basically Move Your Feet part 2)
QOTSA "Go With The Flow"
White Stripes "Seven Nation Army"
Roy Davis Jr "Shock Rock" (dazzling visuals)

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 3 July 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"post emo git-pop" is a deadly name for that type of music
i can't stand that gay bar song,or video
the white stripes song is dreadful but i really like the video

robin (robin), Thursday, 3 July 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugress "Loungemeister" (basically Move Your Feet part 2)

still have not seen this!

also i am still trying to find the name of the song with the video in isometric 'habbo hotel' style graphics with the guy dancing in the club then getting abducted by a nasty alien disguised as beautiful woman - ok dance track, great video

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tiga video is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen. The Kenna video is about 500 times better than the song (which I don't mind but is not my favorite Kenna track by miles). The genius of Sean Paul seems to grow with every video he releases.

Comparing Beyonce to J.Lo is pretty accurate, only Beyonce can actually sing and is currently about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more attractive than J.Lo. The scene where she's in the car: ROWR!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 July 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

j. lo - "i'm glad"
r. kelly - "snake (remix)"

sean paul - "like glue"; the new pornographers - "the laws have changed" (they're the same video)

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

actually the lumidee video's a much better version of the sean paul/new pornographers video

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

plus it has that guy from oz/the wire in it!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

plus: kenny anderson!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

plus: big wheels!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'don't mug yourself' is a bit too literalminded, plus english breakfasts look fairly disgusting

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the malkmus video with the tattoos is fun

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The best music videos I've seen in the last year or two have been by Ruben Fleischer. He's just has his latest one for DJ Format's 'Hit Song' on that godawful 'The Amp' channel, but almost nowhere else.

Ruben's worked with DJ Format before, and made that video for him where Chali 2na rapping ol' skool whilst dressed up in a comedy dolphin suit, like the Flaming Lips, or something.

The website's also got stuff he's done for Gold Chains and The Dismemberment Plan, and some cool little short films about hitmen and stuff.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh that DJ Format video is great - very similar to Joel Lava's work on the Roy Davis Jr video actually

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark Romanek has gone very subtle/uninteresting of late with the videos for Audioslave's 'Cochise' and Linkin Park's 'Faint' being nothing but standard rawk performance in front of enormous lights/fireworks...i know you're busy making movies now Mark but you can be more creative than that surely!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

also look out for an animated Q-Bert vs Automator video (forgot the name of the track) along similar lines to Flesicher style but more 50s b-movie poster style - superb

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything with naked chicks

Spooner, Thursday, 3 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the chali 2na one sounds rilly fun actually. the black eyed peas "where is the love" was somewhat of a tremendous disappointment tho coz it was a bit too college-undie-smug in that "debord is still new for us" sorta post-fight-club way.

but yeah how could i forget the Beyonce video! And why is everyone talking about the car instead of that super-cool contorted body dancing she does which is like vogue meets the human pretzel?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Because post-coital paranoia >>>>>>>>> super-cool contorted-body dancing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce's wagon moves independent of the rest of her

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

U&K Dan: Have you seen the Ginuwine video? Do you love it?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the video for you by the bad boy crew or summat the other night. it was like a gap commercial for jesus. make that a sean john commercial for jesus. yuck.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have not seen the Ginuwine video. I now have a mental image of it as the "Crazy In Love" video with Ginuwine replacing Beyonce (somehow this doesn't really work; Ginuwine can't carry off the fur-cloak-with-leotard look).

A friend of mine on the Beyonce video: "She looks really clumsy in that video, I feel sorry for her."

Me on my friend: "I defy you to find a straight man on the planet who would agree with you."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I've found myself becoming obsessed with the idea of Joe Budden crawling out of my television and COL' ROCKIN' THE PARTY.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

joe budden is like fabolous 2.0. he feels like he rolled off a hi-tech assembly line somewhere in Tokyo.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah DP she doesn't look clumsy, and she's definitely sexy, but she's working WAY too hard. probably to distract everyone from the fact that the verses in that song are tossed-salad placeholders until they get back to the chorus, which is the only thing anyone remembers about that song.

best videos on MTVEspanol: El Gran Silencio's "Super Riddim Internacional," La Ley's "Amate y Salvate" (lots of nekkid models wearing paint of various sorts), Thalia's "Me Pones Sexy" (the Spanish version of "I Want You"), of course Frankie J with "Ya No Es Igual," and Jaci Velasquez' "No Hace Falta un Hombre" where she looks like the most adorable person in the world.

Neudonym, Thursday, 3 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

that ginuwine video got me some the other day

oh no!! joe budden in THE RING parody!! OH NO!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

jay-z - la la la
that video is just so nimble. it seems so tossed-off, but it's perfectly edited, and everyone in it just looks cocky and confident and happy. i like that. i could do without the movie clips, though.

baby feat. clipse - what happened to that boy?
bright, harsh, direct; like the song. and the dudes in clipse look so full of themselves; it's great. plus the bit where baby is posing in slow motion with doves flying around him and operatic wailing in the background is funny.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 3 July 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw the video for Bob Sinclar "Kiss My Eyes" which features Jean-Claude Van Damme and a beautiful woman dancing a very passionate tango, completely demolishing the room in the process. Nice!

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate hate hate the Budden video. It's what killed the song for me.

The Beyonce video is AMAZING. Holy shit.

The Ginuwine track I'm disappointed by.

The Cold video is so terrible, but the song is very good.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that Good Charlotte look really stupid in their videos but is their music really anymore rehashed than Ted Leo whose latest cd has turned up on several best of lists around here. Yea Ted's lyrics are a bit better but musically why is his Joe Jackson, Jam,Thin Lizzy retro sound any better then Good Charlotte's retro pop-punk?

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the beyonce video is good in terms of skin, but man is is seizure inducing. theres a cut like every 1-.5 seconds..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the reason i don't like any of the neo pop-punkers is the voice, i decided. i've been spending the last couple days watching fuse and m2 trying to figure out what these guys major influence is, vocally, and i just can't peg it. i liked all of the first wave of mid-90s pop-punk cuz a. they were all copping so cal snot rock accents or b. brit snot rock accents. i mean, there was something really kind of endearing about watching jam footage from the old gray whistle test or some shit and realizing just how closely green day had studied them. whereas this new stuff...the vocal timbre is tied with the post-vedder grunge balladeer shit for my least favorite sound of the last five or six years.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 July 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the new metallica video is okay, just kinda boring, but the song SUCKS SHIT, oh my god is it so bad. i had to turn it off when it came on today. it almost made me cry...i felt like alex in nyc. even when they "rock out" in ye olde "battery" mode the drum sounds are like someone air popping pop corn.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 July 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the closest vocal antecedent i can think of is something like tim kinsella out of cap'n jazz, but that seems so unlikely from what i've seen over the last few days. i feel like there's this huge band from the last few years that is dangling in front of me and i'm missing it. then again, that hot hot heat vid i saw wasn't too different from good charlotte when it comes right down to it...

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 July 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hey stevem yr mystery vid is from . . . new zealand!
"sadly" most nz house blurs together in its craptitude - it used to get played all the time on m2 but I can't remember if it was House of Downtown or what . . .

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 4 July 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks Ess Kay - that actually adds up because the graphical style of the video was similar to this design outfit i heard of working in either Australia or NZ - cheers for the info

stevem (blueski), Friday, 4 July 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

re : Evanescence vid - haha I like that Gotham-esque architecture.

& yeah, sad to see a Linkin Park video with GIANT ROBOTZ (& isn't their best single), but Chester Bennington's hyper-emo wounded-geek-stylings have gone off on some insane trajectory - can't take my eyes away.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 4 July 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

more info, stevem - my sources tell me the video was by Subware. & even with that info, I still can't remember what the track was called!

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 5 July 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone else notice how much beyonce looks like j.lo in the "crazy in love" video??
definitely- especially the first 20 seconds, I was convinced it was some new JLo song- despite kind of recognizing the opening- until the little text popped up on the bottom of the screen.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 6 July 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)
