frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it might make it easier but then we wouldn't want that would we?

the idea here is to make diverse collections that reflect you as a person based on your musical taste - ie what you believe great music sounds like.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Just looking approvingly at some of the songs Dr. C's chosen ("Spiral Scratch" is 4 tracks which is cheating btw!) and it occurs to me that most of them are things that he would have been aware of 15-20 years ago - which I'm sure would be true of my own list incidentally - but I can't help but wonder why that should be.

Is it simply because he feels that these are the songs that have stood his personal test of time; or is it because (he feels) music was simply better 15-20 years ago; or has he become less song-orinted and more album oriented as he's got older; or is there some sort of law of diminishing returns at work that makes it more and more difficult for a song to have the same impact on us as we get older and ....(less receptive and easily impressed / more jaded and cynical?); or.... wot? Any thoughts / theories?

I think I'm an old fart really, Stew. I just love old punk, pop soul and reggae and whilst there's masses of good stuff around now, not much of it would displace anything from my list. (Sugababes got in tho!). If anything music is more important to the 41 yr old me than it ever has been, but it's hard for *individual recds* to have the same impact as 'Uptown Top Ranking' or 'Shot By Both Sides' did when I was 16. So I suppose I *am* less easily impressed. I don't think I'm more album-oriented tho.

Btw. My list fits into a 80 minute CD. The reason why there are so few tracks is that some of them last for a long time. "Supper's Ready" and "Close To The Edge" fill half a CD alone.

17. Music Is Not A Computer Algebra (Dark Club mix) - John Lord Fonda - 5:42

that was pretty tough. the list is a blend of representation of sounds (glowworms, grey stripe and lizard point cover about half of my album collection) and favourite individual tracks (sky was pink, hale bopp and computer algebra take up way too much space and dont represent anything, but they had to be in there)
