it's in the shops - there is a free MoS branded CD, i didn't buy it

it's been described as Heat crossed with The Face - sounds ghastly

Come on don't hold back..rip into it

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mail on Sunday?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Trash! Don't pick it up! Don't throw your life away!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

it's been described as Heat crossed with The Face

*drools* i want to write for it.

DOOM-E, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

They should've called it Heatface.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe, maybe it's the clothes they wear, the tasteless bracelets
and the dye in their hair, maybe it's their kookiness.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

tracklisting for cd?

the face meets heat sounds ok to me!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to write for it! wow, what a dream magazine! an edgy heat!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds like my idea of hell. Sigh.

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, well get down to WHSmiths, they have it on sale - a day early !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always wanted to be an edgy celebrity reporter! the closest I get now is indie weekly. it sort of feels like i'm writing for tigerbeat if i squint my eyes!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i'm jealous of all the glamorous magazines. i only get to go to vomit and urine drenched bars were boring people standing around in redux eighties clothes.

sigh.

to be a celebrity reporter though!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

doom-e maybe suzy has publishing contacts at Conde Nast?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i would be so lucky, dj martian!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ha [Mail on Sunday]! Tim ! your so out of the loop, MoS = Ministry of Sound

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy's magazine is too 'edgy' for me. i want froth with my celebrity magazines, like national enquirer or heat!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

but is Suzy involved with Conde Nast mags?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(suzy wouldnt help me, dj martian!)

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Heat is throwaway toss - i was disgusted by Boyd Hilton's review of the new Radiohead album, hahaha

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Martian. Are the Ministry of Sounds for the young people?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy is trying to get in there herself, methinks... ;-)

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ministry of Sound type music = commercial uptempto dance music anthems ala Radio 1: Dave Pearce/ Judge Jules.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 July 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(I do know a teensy bit about this DJM even if it's not my favourite thing... the MoS thing was just a silly joke. But as you were, ect ect)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 3 July 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

wouldn't it be fun to actually live the lives that these magazines appealed to? i mean, just think of it--high fashion, some 23-year-old tart in your bed with mousled hair, cocaine, absolutely no self-reflection or inner monologue at all--wot a life!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds horrific

robin (robin), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

wot? no mention of their legal threats to spasticated over their ministry of shit cd? no legal action from the club trash in london ?

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Daddino wins

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

robin, that was the joke, dear.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always wanted to start a magazine FOR coke-addled celebs.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i-d magazine, yancey? they have tht market sewn up. or maybe NOT! yer unemployed. i write. let's get together and build that monorail!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a whole marketing plan ready. distribute the mag in places like spa (RIP) and swim here in nyc (the hipster-celeb holes) for free, and get chloe to interview someone else's publicist. and make the backpages a nycentric variety with job listings and the like. have completely ridiculous, over-the-top pieces on red carpet fashion. just make it disgustingly disgusting and obviously so. but that's kinda what radar (a new u.s. mag) is. it's great tho!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

my goal is to get a job with the national enquirer. that sort of magazine would bode well in the uk, though. that was what i thought bang! was going to be!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i got a national enquirer hookup through a friend of a friend. but one dude writes it all. no wait. it's the weekly world news guy that he knows.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

monorail? Is there a chance the track could bend?

http://www.flyinghellfish.com/images/mono-rail.jpg
Lyle Lanley to thread!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

weekly world news would be fun, aliens and such but national enquirer = that would be something. the only magazine i wanted to write for was '67 tigerbeat (cause of a byrds review) - teen-oriented yet hip - doing that with the weekly indie magazine at the moment.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

more monorail pics please!!!!! : - )

dom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You asked for it.

http://www.flyinghellfish.com/images/mayornimoy.jpg

one of these days, i'ma gettin' me one of them straw hats & bowties like that. then all the dirty indie/dronerock girlies will be BEGGIN' to go out with me. yeah. that'll be swell! just like a Weezer song!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i love lyle landley - he'd sell me on trash!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, bad fashion mixed with bad music, what will London think of next???

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 3 July 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

moodymann gigs?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 4 July 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, London has one thing going for it. :)

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 4 July 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't think it was too bad - was an ok magazine... needs me on it but other than that it's ok...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

that was a joke btw...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy wouldn't help me, dj martian!

Doomie, when I am a commissioning editor somewhere, you will get The Call. But you haven't mailed me in ages ::pouts:: and anyway, it's my turn to get the drinx in.

I've met with the Trash people and like them; the Trash referenced is the Warhol beastie, not the Suede single Erol Alkan named his club after. How a bi-monthly magazine could be anything like Heat - a weekly - and work, I dunno. But what I've seen so far is great considering there are only 3 permanent staffers.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 7 July 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i was pretty impressed - at least it is doing somethig different and not just saying it is while doing the same thing as everone else, plus they had cheryl on the coiver - big up their collective chest!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the editor, Paul, is great. We went for a coffee and collectively imagined that the women on the floor above his (Voguettes) were tapping out Morse code messages with their stilettoes which said things like 'help! I have an eating disorder!' and 'oh bugger, my personal assistant's father is a viscount!'

suzy (suzy), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

vogue is classic - have you ever been to the conde nast offices in ny - it is possibly the funnies thing i have ever done in my life!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

btw do you have an email address that works suzy? drop me on if you will, i've been meaning to ask you stuff!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Heat was named after the Michael Mann cop flick, not the temperature thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

vogue is classic - have you ever been to the conde nast offices in ny - it is possibly the funnies thing i have ever done in my life!

Yo, my firm designed them. (Not the cafeteria, though -- that was Frank Gehry.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, mail me via Ed's address and he will FWD, etc.

Conde Nast experiences are different for girls. I have good links to people who are high up at Vogue, though despite this I feel like I'm rushing a sorority whenever I go there and have to deal with jumped-up desk Sloanes who say things like 'I think it's so cool that you write about music!' when they've just been shown cuttings of everything but. Argh.

You have to read Slab Rat by Ted Heller, it's all true.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i met a friend of mine who works for US vogue for luch in the coinde nast building because he said it was an experience i needed to have. it nearly killed me, i was literally in tears of laughter in the restaurant there...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

...as you found yourself surrounded by women eating watercress soup or raw meat for lunch.

Hanover Square features the Vogue Cafe which is non-smoking so by extension the forecourt of Vogue House also features Isabella Blow (you know, the quail lady) smoking fags every five minutes.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it nearly killed me, i was literally in tears of laughter in the restaurant there...

The thing with the big swooping planes of glass and a layout that's shaped kinda of like a colon? That's Gehry.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm acquainted w/ isabella blow from may days at the times - was always v nice actually... the thing that cracked me up about the conde nast canteen is that there was like a runway down the middle of it and everyone kinda walked down it like they were in a Gucci show - some of the most ludicrous shoes i have ever seen in my life there and lots of women that SCREAMED "extremely high-maintenance fashion type" not giving me a second glance, obv! i have never felt more out of place!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Issy = nice. She's a partner or sommat in friend's gallery, Modern Art Inc. And is now fash director at Tatler which is why they've been putting people like Gwen Stefani on their covers.

Ohh Trash has also poached Corinne Day for its fashion director which can only be a good thing.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing i though funny abt this thread is that people started slagging it before they'd even read it!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy, I typed in a fabulous message but lost it! More later.

Rebis Paul, Monday, 7 July 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy, I sold a short story and am funding a very small writing trip to Corsica - where S has rented out an apartment for three weeks. I'm just taking a typewriter and Valley of the Dolls. I have a marketable idea for something as inspired by something that Alan laughed his head off on. And since pitched it around. Good interest. Let's see what happens.

And am in a bad mood today. I gave an edgy alt-american icon and movie star my number and said 'Hey next time you are in London we should hang out'. He rang me yesterday and I was shocked. The conversation went like this: It's ________. Who? It's _____. Who? Fucking hell, Paul it's ___________ ______________. Oh shit. Nobody phones me. We made plans for Sushi tonight but unfortunately I forgot my mobile and now am probably fucked. What should I do? Just go unconfirmed? He's a cool cat and it would be fun to talk about his new project. What to do? Suzy - am looking for advice!

Rebis Paul, Monday, 7 July 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not suzy but just go - explain about your mobile and have a nice evening...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno.

(BTW Dave, that joke was definitely in jest! Everyone is a careerist! It was irony on my part.)

Rebis Paul, Monday, 7 July 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dear paul - i'd never have noticed it if you hadn't told me, but... you bastard!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

stoppit you guys, you are making me wish i'd become a journo

stevem (blueski), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

steve you just can't imagine how privileged we are ;-) it's the best and most glam job in the world (however, i am thinking about going back to building again)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

trash is ace! think that it will really shake the market up. its got everything that one wants to read in a mag without being too cool for its own good.

bc, Monday, 7 July 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

trash is ace! think that it will really shake the market up. its got everything that one wants to read in a mag without being too cool for its own good

bc, Monday, 7 July 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Bang Bot is umemployed as well!

Rebis Paul, Monday, 7 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I suck. I just got the call from the hang-out. 'Where the fuck were you?'. I dont function like a normal earthling. Sigh. And the conversations were a kick - completely inspired and it's a complete high when someone as talented as that has inspiration. It has a good effect on me .
