fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 4 July 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

wait ... is sharkie the same as sharkey? doing the mp3 tags for all this UKG stuff is a nightmare!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 4 July 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

this is fantastic

Michael B, Friday, 4 July 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wow...

the sad hiphop mantle gently lifted from the sylvianesque shoulders of dizzee ha

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 4 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Will people stop mentioning Sylvian?! (Sorry Mitch.)

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 July 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that's why i mentioned him cozen! (i don't think i've even heard sylvian)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 4 July 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it won't download for me :(

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like we have our 4hero!

beat's heavy but sharkie's just preachy swagness to me...

Chip Morningstar (bob), Saturday, 5 July 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

in fact just call me 0800-

Anne Hedonia (bob), Saturday, 5 July 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to it once and I think it might have sounded the build-up parts in 'One Mic,' but from England. I can't remember exactly.

d k (d k), Saturday, 5 July 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

more people should be mentioning how this sounds really similar to the recent-ish UK hip-hop I've heard -

("Melancholy, thoughtful tracks seem to be something that UK Hip-Hop does particularly well. Harry Love's production here is typical - a nodding beat and a lonely, folky guitar figure give the track a sad, derelict feel. Jehst pulls his collar up against the sharp Autumn wind and flows to keep himself warm.")

- also mutter mutter conceptions-of-empire mutter.
+ "There's always room for improvement"!!! (you really need the high school guidance councilor delivery)

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 5 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(blah blah gypsy, "imported" folk traditions, etc)

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 5 July 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno sharkey doesn't really shine on this one as much as he does with nasty crew. i prefer 'brand new day' for ukg consciousness. jammer is awesome as ever though

ssean, Saturday, 5 July 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

this is pretty amazing, yeah

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 5 July 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know if it trumps the dizzee remix tho

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 5 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

really is fucking exquisite!

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 6 July 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

jk_ (jk@gabba), Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Any chance of getting one of those archive CDRs if you don't attend this?

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I slightly prefer "Vice Versa (Remix)" for unifying the sweet with the sharp. Why slow down if you don't have to?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 12 July 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll take "old skool" by kano over both this and "girls love boys" but i'm not sure it's produced by jammer..

sean g, Saturday, 12 July 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'll take Birds in the Sky!

Ben Williams, Saturday, 12 July 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Why slow down if you don't have to?

beats slowing down 2003 = basslines slowing down 1993

MCing = the new breakbeat science!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Sunday, 13 July 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I do know what you mean Keith but I don't get the sense from "Ain't A Game" or "Birds In The Sky" that this music is simultaneously fast & slow a la jungle - although I do from, say, Wiley's "Happens For A Reason", where the beat is open to being followed at single or double time.

Actually that dual-sence is exactly what I like about "Vice Versa (Remix)" and Danny Weed & Target's "Fresh Air" - they're still moving along at Musical Mob tempo but they sound exquisite, fragile, carefully considered. "Fresh Air" in particular turns the 8-bar format into something quite beautiful - and since that's something that was barely imaginable when "Pulse X" came out, it almost seems more startling than hearing garage actually slow down to hip hop speeds.

I must clarify that I think "Ain't A Game" is really great though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)
