Tim, Tuesday, 16 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why, _Loveless_ has been suggested three times already even without me specifically mentioning it. Clearly all is right with the universe. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cw, Wednesday, 17 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess I should have explained myself more with this one. This isn't a name-a-classic-album or a name-your-favourite-album question, but rather the idea is to name records which turn up all the time in Top 100 lists and actually deserve it, to, you know, counter the assumption that FT is a hive of knee-jerk obscurantists and glib iconoclasts. Ah well.

So with that in mind, Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited. The things he does with phrasing on this have had just SO MUCH influence on rock - and pop! - singing, at least the good stuff. And the accordion stuff is harsher and more surprising than most hip noise antecedents. Classic all the way.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everybody always says "Pet Sounds"... because it's TRUE. Also "Revolver" is THE argument for any disputes about the Quality Of The Beatles - STILL sounds fantastically fresh, ACTION packed, full of EXCITEMENT and there's STILL huge tracts of sonic invention in it that have yet to be equalled...

I once went on a year long SPREE of buying all the Great Albums, and MOST of them were actually GRATE. The notable exception was "Astral Weeks" - if i wanted to listen to a stuck pig, squealing, i would go to a FARM.

MJ Hibbett, Wednesday, 17 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Love's Forever Changes, the Zombies' Odessey and Oracle, Joni Mitchell's Blue, the Beatles' Revolver, Carole King's Tapestry. Surely there are more.

Andy Kellman, Wednesday, 17 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmmm. i suppose it depends which top 100s you refer to.I'd say the vast majority of the records on this page are pretty universally feted .

cw, Wednesday, 17 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

_the velvet underground & nico_ _murmur_ _unknown pleasures_ _the queen is dead_ _in utero_ (although _nevermind_ seems to be more highly acclaimed, sadly)

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 17 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with cw, it depends on which top 100, it will be a cold day in hell when Aphex Twin makes the The Rolling Shite's top-100 albums of all-time, but here on Saturn he's top 10 material (same goes MBV). And with that I add: Parallel Lines by Blondie (pop nirvana), Liquid Swords by GZA, Tusk by Fleetwood Mac, Paid in Full by Erik B & Rakim, Ritual de lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction and finally Reign in Blood by Slayer...okay so they aren't that obvious as the usual VelvetVanMorrisonDylanBeatlesoldwhitefart, but i've seen them mentioned once in a while :)

o.munoz, Thursday, 18 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Love: Forever Changes, cos I'm an old hippy at heart and I love songs about snot. Also they never made anything else of note, so I don't have loads of rubbish albums cluttering up my collection out of some misplaced sense of loyality / duty (hello Captain Beefheart).

Pete, Thursday, 18 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Loads of you have nominated Loveless. Can I be the first to say that Isn't Anything is much better...

Paul Steeples, Thursday, 18 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boogie Down Productions- 'Criminal Minded' Husker Du- 'Warehouse:Songs + Story' Wire- 'Pink Flag' Mouse on Mars- 'Iaro Tahiti' Pil- 'Metal Box' MBV- 'Isn't Anything' Tricky- 'Maxinquaye' Boards of Canada- 'Music has the right to have Children' Joy Division- 'Unknown Pleasures' Spacemen 3- 'Perfect Perscription' Aphex Twin- 'Ambient Works:vol 2'

Stevo, Thursday, 18 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, you can be the first. Alas, you are wrong. ;-) No, I do love _Isn't Anything_ a hell of a lot, but the effect it had on me as a listener and more can't even touch the effect _Loveless_ had and does. And that's saying something. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unknown Pleasures/Closer. The Clash/London's Calling. Leftism. Correct USe of Soap/Real Life. All Buzzcocks. Pet Sounds. 69 Love Songs. Exile on Main Street. Village Green Preservation Society/Arthur/Face To Face/ Something Else. Live at Leeds. Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance Marquee Moon. Definitely Maybe (possibly). Second Toughest... The Slits - Cut.

Listening to Cut a lot at the moment. What a fantastic record!

geeta dayal, Tuesday, 6 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

look, as much as i love _get lost_ (maybe even more than _69 ls_), i still don't think it's achieved any sort of broad recognition as a classic album. _69 ls_ is a current critic's darling but a certain amount of time must accrete before an album becomes a classic, no?

sundar subramanian, Monday, 12 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
Yes.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 14 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three weeks pass...
What is my favoutite album of all-time? interesting question, or should that be, difficult question? Joking aside, when people ask me that, i often reply. 1 Marvin Gayle's - 'What's going on' ****** any album that, can cover;environmental issues - pollution etc... social problems - Homelessness etc.. the pointlessness of war. civil rights issues. our responsibilty in looking after children. to love everything that is precious,in life. with such beauty, passion, compassion. Deserves by me anyway, to be sited as the single greatest, body of work, layed down on acetate.

As well, as Marvin Gayle's classic - 'What's going on' Album.i would encourage, everyone to own a copy of. 2 Stevie Wonder's - 'Stories in the Key of Life'. 3 Van Morrison's - 'Astral Weeks'/'Moondance' 4 Nick Drake's - 'Five Leaves Left' Remastered Edition 5 Radiohead's - 'The Bends'/'Ok Computer' 6 Pink Floyd's - 'Dark Side of the Moon' 7 George Michael's - 'Older'/'Songs from the Last Century' 8 The Beatles - 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'/ 'Abbey Road'/'White Album' 'Rubbersoul'/'Revolver' 9 Portishead - 'Dummy' 10 Leftfield -'Leftism'/'Rhythm & Stealth' 11 Massive Attack - 'Mezzanine'/'Blue Lines' 12 Tanita Tikaram - 'Ancient Heart' 13 Peter Gabriel - 'So' 14 Frank Sinatra - 'No One Cares' 15 The Eagles - 'Hotel California' 16 Jimi Hendrix Experience - ' Are You Experienced' If you don't own any other album, please purchase - Marvin Gaye's 'What's going on' Trust me, if you own this one, single album, your life will be forever better, that you purchased it. Love Richard xxx

Prince, Sign O' The Times

Matthew E. Armstrong (gensu3k1), Thursday, 1 February 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

schubert's winterreise, fischer-dieskau and jorg demus, dg 1966.
maybe this should be an unlistenable classic.

Frogm@n Henry (Frogm@n Henry), Thursday, 1 February 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

I've never understood how something can be unlistenable and great simultaneously. Either you get some kind of enjoyment (visceral, melodic, etc) out of listening to it or you do not. I think the word "legendary" is more properly applied to records like (say) Metal Machine Music in that its reputation precedes it and is as important to its stature as its contents.

Not to be a dick or anything and no offense intended, Henry, this is just something that's bugged me lately.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 1 February 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

The majority of classics deserve it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 1 February 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

What i mean about that record, is i listened to it several times, horrified each time, and it burned itself into my mind. I've only listened to it several times since, but i still think it's magnificent. It's just too fucking scary and dark to listen to regularly!

Frogm@n Henry (Frogm@n Henry), Thursday, 1 February 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

Talking Heads, Remain in Light

Adam Harrison-Friday (AdamFriday), Thursday, 1 February 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Astral Weeks definitely deserves to be called a "so-called classic".

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Thursday, 1 February 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

Curious. This thread is six years old, yet its title would lead one to believe it was created today.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Thursday, 1 February 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

slayer - reign in blood

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 1 February 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

'Forever Changes', 'Odessey and Oracle' seconded.

also:
Super Furry Animals: 'Fuzzy Logic'
XTC: 'Skylarking'

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 1 February 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

"classic" always gets downgraded on these kind of threads...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 1 February 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I never really liked Prince too.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 1 February 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
