a whole pile of pop-punk/emo bands these days use synths in that Rentals sort of way, but with faster, er, "punkier" songs. this guy sez "whatever."

there must be good ones too (the ones mentioned above are mostly good, but I mean other ones too), but I'm in something of a contrary mood, I guess

Fischerspooner own this thread.

maria b (maria b), Sunday, 6 July 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ramones had some synths on Too Tough to Die and Animal Boy -- but it was synths in that cheesy mid-80s way. Which I'm not saying is a bad thing, I love those albums.

Also, Carter USM.

does "punk" = indie, new wave, and postpunk bands? or just hardcore and stuff in that vein? i mean no duh, coming up with a new wave band who used synths isn't exactly a challenge.

Circle X, Public Image LTD., Xerobot, Monitor and a bunch of the other L.A.F.M.S. groups, S.P.K., ummm,....take a look on synthmuseum.com--each synthesizer entry has a small paragraph at the bottom of each page listing artists known to have used particular synthesizers.

four years pass...

Anyone heard The Ralphs? There's samples, but I'm at work, so I can't check 'em out. I'm imaging a Billy Synth & the Turn-Ups kinda affair....

"Punk" to be understood as "post-1970, not folk".

dad a, Thursday, 18 October 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Those S Squad tracks from the Keats comp, which I just got a few weeks ago, have been totally rocking my world.

And did this thread really go this far without mention of Cabaret Voltaire?

And from Australia, Slugfuckers and Primitive Calculators.

dan selzer, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

More from Sydney:

Distant Locust (1984-91):

http://www.myspace.com/distantlocust

Bad Art (current):

http://www.myspace.com/baaaadaaart

Come to think of it, there's a fair amount this stuff in Sydney. My band plays with one or other of them every few weeks. But these two are among the creme de la creme, in my view.

moley, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

With a definition as wide as this thread suggests, I guess 20/20 could almost count as punk as well.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

Well, there's the whole Dirtnap scene- The Epoxies, The Minds, probably half the other bands they've put out.

The Epsilons have two good records of garage punk with Casio in the place of Farfisa.

Volt, a recent In The Red band, splits the difference between noise-punk and Miss Kitten.

Down here in North Cakalaky, we've had Witchcraft By a Picture, Black Castle, Piedmont Charisma and Jett Rink.

In this decade, just having a synth is a good indicator that a punk band isn't generic pop-punk and might be worth a listen.
