When members of legendary groups form other, purportedly lesser groups that you actually prefer...

You know, maybe you prefer the X-pensive Winos to the Stones. Or Sugar to Husker Du. Or the Seahorses to the Stone Roses. The choice is yours.

I personally much prefer Crooked Fingers to Archers of Loaf and Spiritualized to Spacemen 3, although the latter groups I also like...

ham on rye (ham on rye), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I know they came first but I prefer McCarthy to Stereolab, for the most part.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana = dud
Foo Fighters = classic

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the first Fight album was better than a lot of Priest stuff.

Wyndham Earl, Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

folk implosion

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Cinerama. Far better than The Wedding Present.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

neil finn's crowded house over split enz
alex chilton's big star over the boxtops
sylvian/fripp over japan or king crimson
mccartney's wings over the beatles (joking)

bahtology, Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the boxtops were more legendary than big star??

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

solo: Dennis Wilson, Stephen Mallinder

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 6 July 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the boxtops were more legendary than big star??

I would guess that more music listeners would recognise one of the Boxtops' hits over anything that Big Star released. This is not comparing the substance of either band's output, just the actual popularity of the groups.

bahtsheezey, Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Loose Fur > Wilco
Vaz > Hammerhead
Sausage > Primus
Preston School of Industry > Pavement (sike)

Famous Athlete, Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That doesn't = "legendary" b/c they'd still have no idea who sang the song. Plus I'm guessing most people under 30 have never even heard of the Boxtops.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

they'd probably recognize "the Letter" though. But they'd more likely recognize the That 70's Show theme, so eh.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

me thinks that these Big Star defenders may be protesteth a bit too much. I see where you were coming from, bahtology, and I would agree with you. The Boxtops would be much more recognized due to the frequency of radio play that The Letter (as well as Cry like a Baby)recieves on classic and oldies radio stations. Big Star is more of a critics "in thing", even with the remake by Cheap Trick for dat 70's shoe. by the way " The Ballad of El Goodo " is primo.

brian, Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though I loved the New York Dolls, I love the Heartbreakers even more. Johnny Thunders wasn't the most prolific songwriter but his best songs are on LAMF. Despite the notorious muddy mix ( LAMF Revisited does manage to clean it up, somewhat) LAMF and Live at Max's Kansas City show that the Heartbreakers could be contenders when they wanted to be.

Jeff K (jeff k), Sunday, 6 July 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jody: I've read plenty of previews for Alex Chilton shows where Big Star gets a cursory mention at most and the focus is all on 'formerly of The Box Tops'.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, it ain't like he's really going to play much Box Tops or Big Star (plenty of "Volare" though)

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I know that "The Letter" is played every so often on oldies radio but I didn't think people really associated that song with a particular group; it's just "one of those old songs you hear sometimes." Like, how many people nowadays would be able to say "The Letter" if you said "The Box Tops"?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(number of Big Star hits) X 1,000,000 < (number of Box Tops hits)

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget "Cry Like a Baby" Jody!

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dukes of Stratosphear OWN this thread. I can't stand XTC (despite putting a White Horse on one of their covers, and imitating the Avengers in videos) but the Dukes are possibly one of my favourite psych bands ever.

kate (kate), Monday, 7 July 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Cinerama. Far better than The Wedding Present.

I want to fire a bazooka at your face for this comment.

Kate, Dukes of Stratosphear ARE Xtc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They may be the same people, but it's not the same band at all.

Go ahead. But it doesn't alter the fact* that "Your Charms" is one of the greatest 3-and-a-half minutes of pop ever, and that nothing TWP did was anywhere near as spectacular.

* NB: This is not a fact.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Plaid>Black Dog by 100 miles.

"Kennedy" still shits all over it from a great, splattery height.

Nick Cave's Bad Seeds stuff to the Birthday Party.

Fugazi to Minor Threat & Rites of Spring

Chinese Stars to Six Finger Satellite

Ian Johnson (elmo oxygen), Monday, 7 July 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, Dukes of Stratosphear ARE Xtc.

Weeeeell, not 100%. The Dukes do have Iain Gregory in the band, too. But close enough.

And Kate, XTC have sounded far closer to the Dukes since the Dukes' birth, except with a more modern studio sound.... so, I'm kinda confused by your comment, too.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Fantomas more than Faith No More, The Melvins, or Slayer. If I were someone else catching me say that, I would point and yell "BLASPHEME!", but alas I speaketh the truth.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Surprised that no one attempted to say New Order yet...

Blind Faith > Cream

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I met a guy a couple of weeks ago who furiously maintained that Vinnie Vincent's Invasion and Frehley's Comet were both vastly superior to Kiss. Suffice to say, the conversation was very brief.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians over the Soft Boys.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I will literally shoot peas out of my nose if anyone says (and means) that they prefer the Style Council to the Jam.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

There were a number of years in the mid-90s when Omoide Hatoba was more interesting to listen to than the Boredoms. If they ever put out another album, they might still be.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Breeders (Last Splash) > Pixies (though really, Frank Black's solo career has grown on me)
Royal Trux > Pussy Galore
White Hassle > Railroad Jerk

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just about to say Frank Black > Pixies.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sausage > Primus

Lots of people will probably also say:

Primus > Possessed

But I don't.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I much prefer New Order to Joy Division, but I don't think it's a good answer to this question because anyone who still "purports" that NO is a lesser group knows not what they say. It might have been justified when they first announced that they were going to stay together and add one of their girlfriends to the lineup, but not today...

Tomasino Jones (tomasinojones), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

IN WHAT UNIVERSE?

kephm, Monday, 7 July 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Frederick Thordendal's Special Defects > Meshuggah

Burning Airlines > Jawbox (oh I'm sure I'll get it for that one...maybe if I heard more Jawbox I would feel differently)

Mars Volta > At the Drive In. Er, having only heard about two tracks from each.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a tossup with Joy Division and New Order: the former are probably more "legendary" but more people probably know the latter's hits. I like both a lot, obv.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Imperial Teen > Faith No More

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Fleetwood Mac > Buckingham Nicks

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Imperial Teen may be the only one I can think of unless New Order counts.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Fleetwood Mac > Fleetwood Mac

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

seconded.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Fleetwood Mac > Fleetwood Mac
are you bigging up the Peter Green version over the Lindsey Buckingham version?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 July 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - depends what day of the week it is!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

although your older ex-hippie types who bigup the Peter Green version but sniff sniff at Buckingham's annoy the fuck out of me

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They hate fun.
