Crescent: C/D?

I've only heard the self-titled EP and Now but I just love Crescent's huge clattering warehouse-reverb sound. Is anyone else a fan? How does the later stuff (Electronic Sound Constructions, Collected Songs) compare? And who's excited about the release of By the Roads and the Fields at the end of this month?

i like the planet singles but th emore aggressive nature on the album didn't serve me well. haven't heard anything since the first full length. i wonder how much the planet singles would draw on ebay?

not much

really? planet records has no cache? i have all of the singles.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

but then i tried ot sell tally ho! and death and the maiden once and neither even drew my minimum of 8 bucks.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

cripes - i paid much more than that for my tally ho 7". but only the movietone or yo la tengo planet singles get the bucks, and not even that many bucks.

i could claim that crescent was originally intended for release on sarah.

_electronic sound constructions_ is basically one guy from crescent, i think, and it's instrumental, mostly bass/drums/organ/tape delay & spring reverb/turntable. it sounds sunbaked and strange, always makes me think of driving through the desert in arizona and new mexico. i guess it's dub of a sort.

_collected songs_ combines the 'rock' crescent with the _e.s.c._ sound and winds up with a rather bleak album of songs that a lot of people seemed to dislike at the time. you could almost compare it to this heat's _deceit_; not for quality so much as the way they subtly blend the 'experimental' sounds and songs.

_by the roads and the fields_ is on soulseek already - it's pretty similar to _collected songs_ but more fleshed out and less thoroughly morose. i almost hear some influence of african music (like the _discotheque_ compilations of guinean music) in the guitar and layered rhythms.

reading descriptions of by the roads made it sound something similar to the matt elliot record or the last two movietone records, does it bear no resemblance to those two at all? the voice always drove me up a wall with the first crescent record.

'Electronic Sound Constructions' has mostly strange poem style songs over some oddly switching tape loops. "There Is No Matter" is probably the best one. If you like "Unit System" off of the self titled EP, you will probably like the album.

I think those odd ball narriator poem tracks is a pretty unique sound and I was suprised to hear the noisy rock songs when I got the EP and 'Now, as I heard 'Electronic Sound Constructions' first off.

A new Crescent album! I have the Happy Love for it already. Admittedly this was already apparent. ;-)

just listened to "by the roads and fields" again and i take back the 'more fleshed out' comment. if anything, it's even more spare, though there is a greater variety of instruments.

Some people prefer it to A Love Supreme.

The inevitable Coltrane derail.

Some people prefer it to A Love Supreme.

It's a damn fine album, but come now.

And besides, "some people" is no measuring stick for anything. Some people like to shoot animals for sport. Some people think W is doing a great job. Some people like really hairy women. There's no accounting for some people.

Phenomenal. By The Roads and The Fields was the best album of 2003. I was thinking of nominating it for the ILM poll but would anyone have voted for it? A FINE FINE ALBUM..

if i could just float this thread to the surface to gulp a hasty lungful of oxygen before it sinks back down to the depths once more: new album is out now and i'm enjoying it quite a lot

Link to same? It's not on their Bandcamp.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 June 2017 12:55 (eight years ago)

It's on Geographic (same label as the Pastels, Future Pilot AKA, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Movietone - all of whom it reminds me of)

four weeks pass...

I hadn't paid serious attention to Crescent since the late 90s (though I did really like them then). This new album is very unexpected - pretty straightforward lo-if songwriter stuff - but very nice.
