The UK Top 40 Prediction League - Week Two

Right - just a few things to note - first off, I'm abandoning the whole 'two points for predicting outside the top 40' rule. I think. I've not factored it into this week's scores anyway. But maybe I will. I dunno. I'm feeling a bit miffy. Fuck it. These are the standings at present:

1) Edward O - 51 pts
2) James Mitchell - 40 pts
3) Jacob - 35 pts
4=) Alex in Doncaster - 31 pts
4=) Lid - 31 pts
6=) Martin Skidmore - 27 pts
6=) Affectian - 27 pts
6=) Siegbran Hetteson - 27 pts
9) Billy Dods - 23 pts
10) Dom Passantino - 22 pts
11=) William Bloody Swygart - 21 pts
11=) Joni - 21 pts
11=) Jel - 21 pts
14) Stevem - 10 pts

New entrants always welcome - the rules are here, but the generic predicting outside the top 40 rule has been abandoned (it's still 15 points for correctly predicting the position that a record enters outside the 40, though).

Now - next week's picks:

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip
EMINEM - Business
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up
PINK - Feel Good Time
MADONNA - Hollywood
KYM MARSH - Come On Over
JAVINE - Real Things
BLUR - Crazy Beat
LONGVIEW - Further
VITAMIN C - Last Night

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm winning! But I sense I will suck lots this week 'coz I only know how 4 of these go. Better fix that up quick...

#37

I'm going for Shania Twain there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip #14 (to think I almost liked her last one)
EMINEM - Business #8 (fourth single off album.. zzz..)

PINK - Feel Good Time #3 (even though it is very shit indeed)
MADONNA - Hollywood #6 (grr.. release Nothing Fails you silly thing!)
KYM MARSH - Come On Over #24 (no way will this get higher than Sinead)
JAVINE - Real Things #12 (deserves higher. v nice. BEYONCE TAKE NOTE!)
BLUR - Crazy Beat #10 (of course, on merit this would be #110)
LONGVIEW - Further #39 (Because "slow" songs with guitars are out)
VITAMIN C - Last Night #20 (great idea + great execution = mediocre chart position)

Beyonce still at #1.
#37 will be Delta Goodrem - Lost Without You.

#37- the Ocean Colour Scene song.

i think y'all underpredicting Javine. Topshop oxford st was playing her song and shoppers were loving it.

Lid, Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Lid - just to point out, you didn't pick the number one, and you've picked two songs to go in at #12. Nowt wrong with doing that, just you might wanna change it...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps two will be equal twelfth next week.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip - 12 (weak single, shoulda released "anything but ordinary")
EMINEM - Business - 9 (not very good song, with performance video)
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up - 26 (never heard of him)
PINK - Feel Good Time - 11 (it's a rubbish song, and the kids won't dig this. Please Pink, never release a song this bad again)
MADONNA - Hollywood - 9 (it's a rubbish song, and the kids don't really dig her)
KYM MARSH - Come On Over - 7 (it's quite pleasent, and I can see it doing well)
JAVINE - Real Things - 3 (strong first single!)
BLUR - Crazy Beat - 16 (not heard it, but I guess fanbase will get them top 20)
LONGVIEW - Further - 47 (who the hell are they? and why are they named after a green day album?)
VITAMIN C - Last Night - 20 (haven't heard this either, heard it mentioned though)

#37 = S Club - Say Goodbye

oh and of course Beyonce will stay at number one.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip - #8
EMINEM - Business - #6
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up - #7
PINK - Feel Good Time - #5
MADONNA - Hollywood - #9
KYM MARSH - Come On Over - #18
JAVINE - Real Things - #4
BLUR - Crazy Beat - #15
LONGVIEW - Further - #34
VITAMIN C - Last Night - #21

Beyonce #1, #37 - Metallica

I love the Javine song, I LOVE the video, etc etc. When half-listening to badly tuned radio at work I kept confusing it with Beyonce which is probably some kind of heresy but it's the sound of sunshine squeezing between slatted-blinds in the morning (I don't have slatted blinds) and she really impresses me for no particular reason that I can think of.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Longview are an indie band from Manchester who sound a bit shoegaze/dreampoppy. They are also on the B-List at Radio 1. They're sort of alright.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip #9
EMINEM - Business #7
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up #5
PINK - Feel Good Time #8
MADONNA - Hollywood #13 (Q.is this her worst single? A. yes)
KYM MARSH - Come On Over #12
JAVINE - Real Things #3
BLUR - Crazy Beat #14
LONGVIEW - Further #43 (no idea who/what this is)
VITAMIN C - Last Night #24

beyonce still at #1, darkness at #37

(i've had to spend a minute both this week and last week trying
to find the '#' key cos its not where its supposed to be,
hopefully what passes for my brain can remember for next week)

joni, Sunday, 6 July 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

alt-3 reprazent!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 6 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Box Recorder didnt even make the top 100 i see

a piss poor 10 for me - all cos i underestimated Beyonce against S Club, and mistook Sinead Quinn for Sinead O Connor!

this week's predictions:

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip - #8
EMINEM - Business - #4
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up - #11
PINK - Feel Good Time - #3
MADONNA - Hollywood - #5
KYM MARSH - Come On Over - #15
JAVINE - Real Things - #2
BLUR - Crazy Beat - #13
LONGVIEW - Further - #16
VITAMIN C - Last Night - #40

Beyonce - #1...

#37 i'll go for a new entry by Kraftwerk (i assume i am allowed to do this)

but when is Lumidee out?

for reference: http://www.dotmusic.com/reviews/releases/

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 6 July 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

See, that Javine single is fantastic and probably deserves to go top 5 or even #1, but I reckon it's gonna get swamped. It doesn't jump out like "Crazy In Love" even though it's much, much better. I considered putting Kraftwerk at #37, too.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 7 July 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

edward o - re. Madonna - 'Nothing Fails' is pemncilled for Christmas release apparently. Should've been single number one.....

russ t, Monday, 7 July 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip - #11 (See ya later, girl)
EMINEM - Business - #2 (This may even be worse than "Lose Yourself". Didn't he used to be, you know, not shit?)
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up - #9 (Go away)
PINK - Feel Good Time - #5 (At least she's cheered up a bit)
MADONNA - Hollywood - #4 (This is dreadful, but it is Madonna. She's brought the pelvic thrusts back in her video as well)
KYM MARSH - Come On Over - #16 (At least it's not "Business")
JAVINE - Real Things - #21 (Comparable to "Business")
BLUR - Crazy Beat - #10 (Worse than "Business")
LONGVIEW - Further - #43 (The indie "Business")
VITAMIN C - Last Night - #25 ("Business". In general)

This week's number #37... "DJ DJ" by The Transplants (Number 37 tends to be a good number for "fanbase" singles)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 7 July 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna video = mutton dressed as mutton

'Business' is better and worse than half the other songs in the list (Vitamin C is by far the best - oh, hey - hence lowest chart position)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 7 July 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of the current top 10 look like they'll hang around for a while, so I'm betting on none of these entering that high...

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip - #9
EMINEM - Business - #6
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up - #18
PINK - Feel Good Time - #27 (boring, boring, boring)
MADONNA - Hollywood - #16
KYM MARSH - Come On Over - #29
JAVINE - Real Things - #12
BLUR - Crazy Beat - #26
LONGVIEW - Further - Outside Top 40, if there's any justice
VITAMIN C - Last Night - #32

37 will be Electric Six.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip #9
EMINEM - Business #6
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up #7
PINK - Feel Good Time #3
MADONNA - Hollywood #4
KYM MARSH - Come On Over #12
JAVINE - Real Things #8
BLUR - Crazy Beat #11
LONGVIEW - Further #45 (this won't chart, whatever happens)
VITAMIN C - Last Night #38

I'm sticking with what I know and I'm guessing that Paul Van Dyk will be #37 this week.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Longview - number, ooh, 52, to be precise...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This week Woolworths are showing big love to Pink, Javine and Kym Marsh, but I don't know how reliable Woolworths are anymore. The Kym Marsh single is surely far too mehh to do anything much.

I've only bought Javine this week because it burrows its way into my skull with ruthless Beyonce-displacing efficiency, the CD has four tracks AND the video. When did CD singles with more than three tracks become chart-eligible again? Is there a many-tracks-as-you-like-but-keep-the-total-running-time-below-20-minutes kind of regulation now?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, I'm not sure, cos Moloko did that with Familiar Feeling too. Is it that the B-Sides are all mixes?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

All the Javine b-sides are mixes, so it may be so. I remember Kelis doing something similar about three years ago and still charting, so this has confused me slightly ever since then. Although not enough to actually make the effort to find out, obviously.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's OK iff it's all mixes and if the multimedia component is the same song.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

you're allowed as many tracks on a single as you want i think, as long as its under a certain time limit. my 'Papua New Guinea' CD single has 6/7 mixes on it and i'm sure this particular release was the one that got in the charts.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip #2 (absolutely terrible but it's doing very well everywhere else, so...)
EMINEM - Business #3
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up #11
PINK - Feel Good Time #5
MADONNA - Hollywood #12
KYM MARSH - Come On Over #22
JAVINE - Real Things #8
BLUR - Crazy Beat #10
LONGVIEW - Further #20
VITAMIN C - Last Night #28

Beyonce #1
Michelle Branch #37

BTW, will there be UK releases for:
Thicke "When I Get You Alone"
Roxane "Re-Arrange"
Underdog Project vs Sunclub "Summer Jam 2003"
Fabolous "Can't Let You Go"
?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

that Avril song is my favourite of hers so far (not saying much at all) - what the hella wrong with me?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 7 July 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Crap. Can I change my #37 pick to Lisa Marie Presley? When I was doing mine, I thought sodding Delta was #20 last week, not #10.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You used to be allowed as many and as long as you want, but some years back it was changed to 3 tracks, 20 minutes maximum. A video seems to be allowed as a free bonus. Things that breach it are ineligible, I thought, like Massive Attack's latest - but the rules may have been modified recently, I don't know.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 July 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kym Marsh single is surely far too mehh to do anything much

I'm not participating in this as such but Kym Marsh is popping up everywhere with promotional appearances. She has this 'older sister' vibe which seems to have a certain appeal with young girls (as well as an obvious appeal to men that is probably much less significant in stimulating record sales..could be wrong). Although this single isn't as good as the last one I'd be surprised if it didn't enter the chart between 8 and 12.

The Madonna single is her best in a while and will be top 5.

The Javine single is quite good but would struggle to reach the top 10 I'd have thought. Then again if it's getting the 1.99 treatment up and down the land I could be wrong.

David (David), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and 'Nothing Fails' is dire and would need a substantial remix for single release.

David (David), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah; to enter the prediction fray!

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip #7
EMINEM - Business #3
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up #8
PINK - Feel Good Time #4
MADONNA - Hollywood #6
KYM MARSH - Come On Over #13
JAVINE - Real Things #9
BLUR - Crazy Beat #16
LONGVIEW - Further #22
VITAMIN C - Last Night #38

Tom May (Tom May), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I should pick Beyonce to stay at #1. Judging by my performance last week, this ten pointer (that I left off the rest of the Week #2 predictions) could make me a winner.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 7 July 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgot to nominate number 1, Beyonce. Clearly.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I have now seen the midweeks, so all predictions from now on score half points.

And I think we might be in for a few surprises come Sunday.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink for no. 1? arse, i was going to predict this, also thought Javine may do it but decided to play safe with Beyonce.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, are my points halved cos I'm after the midweek? I didn't look, honestly sir.

AVRIL LAVIGNE - Losing Grip #4
EMINEM - Business #5
JOE BUDDEN - Pump It Up #17 (who?)
PINK - Feel Good Time #7
MADONNA - Hollywood #2
KYM MARSH - Come On Over #8
JAVINE - Real Things #6
BLUR - Crazy Beat #11
LONGVIEW - Further #38
VITAMIN C - Last Night #28

Beyonce at #1.
#37 will be... Kraftwerk.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What do the midweeks actually say, then? Are they already posted on another thread somewhere?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, Ian SPACK = Affectian in the league table thingy. My cookies alternate randomly betwixt the two names. Apologies.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot to predict #1 also- yeah beyonce. im going to leave it as two new entries at #12 as my instinct tells me to.

lid, Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian... soddit, I'll leave it for this week. But next week, mind... oooooh...

Siegbran - I get them off Playlouder's reports. Mild hints:

- only one of the picks was outside the 40 in the midweeks
- other than that one, everyone is going to be rather disappointed by the performance of at least one other single this week
- and might be rather surprised by how well another one of them does.

Oh, and Joe Budden is a fule. But we sort of knew that already, didn't we.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Avril isn't looking too hot is she?

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

She might be. On the other hand, she might not. We'll just have to wait and see.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the French Avril are fuckin great, incidentally

a useful source for release dates - http://top40-charts.com/news.php?nid=5182

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only person in Britain who likes the Joe Budden single?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Apart from the people who are buying it (even so, won't go Top 10, mid-teens at best I fear))

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Budden is as likely to save Def Jam as Def Jam Vendetta is.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Def Jam's as likely to need saving as the New York Yankees

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

OH, and Dom forgot to predict #1, though he's told me on the phone it'll be Beyonce, so I'm including it in his predictions.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 12 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And Tom May, if he's reading, forgot to pick either #1 or #37.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 12 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i watched Cd:uk and oooh, never underestimate the Ma'Don.

i dont know when it's released, but it'd be cool to predict mark owen's new one. i like it heaps.

lid, Saturday, 12 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah William, sorry; must not have been reading clearly enough.
#37: Shania Twain's lamentable single that i can't recall the name too.
#1: Beyonce... clearly. If not, i'll eat my metaphorical top hat.

Tom May (Tom May), Saturday, 12 July 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Clattering through the album chart, and we're almost underway... I have a spreadsheet to help me with adding shit up this week. Beyonce is still albums #1, with The Darkness in with a big chrome tipped bullet at #2.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr May - ta there - those'll score full this week, but such tardiness may be frowned upon in the future...

Lid - when Mark Owen's new one comes out, I'd be almost certain it'll find its way into the picks.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

#37 is...

N-Trance. No one picked it. Oh well, maybe next week...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Benny Benassi on the way in this week?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Benny Benassi will be in next week's chart... and I reckon he's got a good shot at #1. Lots of indie stuff out next week too... could be very, very interesting.

For this week, though, #s 40 to 31 have just gone by, and it would appear Longview have sold a lot of the pickers a dummy cos they weren't in there...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Are N-Trance from Italy, by the way?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

First pick in, and it's Longview at #27, which gets one point for Lid, and absolutely sod-all for anyone else.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

This edges Lid into 4th, one point ahead of Alex in Doncaster, by the way.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril at #22 SHOCKAH!!! No points for anyone!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty much certain Vitamin C have ended up outside the top 40 too now, whcih means no-one'll get points off them either (though if it's #41 or #42 Stevem'll nick some)... not a terribly good week thus far, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm fairly sure N-Trance are British.

And Simply Red at 21 - I was already wondering why it wasn't among William's picks.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno why, to be honest - I usually get the picks off the HMV site, maybe they had Vit. C ahead of it... not sure. It's probably cos I really don't like Simply Red that much.

Even so, we've still got this week's big sleeper hit to come, I do believe...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And here it is! Kraftwerk are #20!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Kraftwerk at 20!

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Blur #18 - 1 each for Jel and Tom May.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

League wise, that puts Jel joint tenth with Dom.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

darnit, i bet if two more people had bought the ocean colour scene single this week, my #37 position would have been bang on.

lid, Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Budden #13 - point each for Steve & Siegbran.

Crap week...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In league terms, Siegbran goes sixth. Stevem is still second bottom.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Kym Marsh #10 - point each for Joni, Ian, Lid and James Mitchell. Moves Ian up to joint sixth, and Joni to joint tenth.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

We're all going to be fucked if Beyonce isn't number one.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 13 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm disgusted at Kym Marsh placing so high...

Jacob (Jacob), Sunday, 13 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Eminem at #6 - points to follow...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 13 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

woo! at least I got one...

Jacob (Jacob), Sunday, 13 July 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And it's the first big scorer of the week, with ten points for James Mitchell, Jacob, Lid and Alex In Doncaster, five for Joni and Ian, and one for me, Steve, Billy Dods & Ed O.
