You gotta have 'Under the Weather' by Devine & Statton.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

In the course of putting this together I realized that R. Kelly, 3LW, and the Mountain Goats have more insight into relationships combined than probably does every advice columnist ever.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 July 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That Tuuli song is terribly nasty.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've made several of these over the years, here's one of them:

1. Strawberry Switchblade – 'Since Yesterday'
2. Ivy – 'Can’t Even Fake It'
3. Hope Factory – 'Dreary'
4. Star Ghost Dog – 'Knock Down'
5. Club 8 – 'The End Of The Affair'
6. XTC – 'The Disappointed'
7. Honeybunch – 'My Contribution To The Greenhouse Effect'
8. Softies – 'Charms Around Your Wrist'
9. Aden – 'Cause Of Your Tears'

"My Contribution to the Greenhouse Effect" = the whole concept of breakups as mix-worthy condensed into one song to put on the mix: there is nothing more gloriously indie-kid than this, and sometimes I think it's the best/single/ever.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the point of a "breakup mix"?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I made a "dealing with the breakup" mix awhile back. It went...

1. N*E*R*D "Stay Together" (-> sample of Homer saying "D'oh!" ->)
2. Lyrics Born & Poets of Rhythm "I've Changed My Mind"
3. Mazzy Star "Fade Into You"
4. Cibo Matto "Moonchild"
5. Fishbone "Lyin' Ass Bitch"
6. Ben Harper "Please Please Me Like You Used To" (title?)
7. Ween "She's My Baby"
8. Black Eyed Peas w/ Macy Grey "Love Won't Wait"
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers "Breaking the Girl"
10.The Roots w/ Jill Scott "You Got Me" (live, cuz I like it mo')
11.System of a Down "Atwa"
12.Ani DiFranco "Untouchable Face"
13.Peter Gabriel "Solsbury Hill"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Amz; to listen to whilst trying to deal with a break-up. At least in my experiences.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

So it is traditional to give a copy to the ex, or is it strictly for personal use?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The one I gave to my ex just had Fishbone's "Lyin' Ass Bitch" on it 17 times.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That is beyond classic, Nick.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He probably closed with Ween's "You Fucked Up" about 22 times.

"You dicked me over, and now you'll pay!"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i thought it was like two people giving each other tapes after they've broken up, which i found sort of creepy.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

although the idea of making a tape free of any need to impress someone is interesting, it's not very romantic.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

well ams i did give a copy to my ex. i dunno if its "traditional" or not but yeah.

the point i guess being emotional catharsis. sorta like talking to your ex, except with songs and stuff.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 July 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Awwww, Sterling, so sorry to hear about your break-up -- last we talked, things seemed to be going so well! (*sigh*). Well, I don't want to make you any more uncomfortable than you already are, so I won't ask you for details or anything.

About your mix-tape : I'm not familiar with all the songs you've chosen, but the ones I do know seem appropriate -- and would flow together well. Actually, I'm kind of surprised that there's no Roxy Music here -- since I'm pretty sure you told me you were a Roxy fan!

Of course it's impossible to include ALL of your favorite bands on a 90-minute tape, and some bands have more romantic "baggage" than others do, so the absence is understandable, -- but for me, Roxy and romantic disappointment are like bread-and-butter : they are meant for each other. (I guess it's because Bryan Ferry and Co. have raged and sighed their way though an entire career of break-up songs. In fact, it's hard to think of a Roxy song that _isn't_ about break-up in one form or another!)

So with that in mind, here are a few Roxy lyrics that might resonate with you now. (Hopefully you'll never have to use them again though!).

:)

------

"To Turn You On" from "Avalon"

"now you're on your own,
who cares about you --
except me, God help me,
when things go wrong,
I'd do anything to turn you on..."

----------

"Cry Cry Cry" from "Manifesto"

"Are you ready for bad blood?
I´ve got my share.
I´m sick of your sweet, sweet nothings
In my ear ..."

-------

from "Space Between" off "Avalon"

"The way I see it
This relationship ain´t right.
The space between us ;
we better close it up tonight"

-------

from "Oh Yeah" off "Flesh + Blood"

"it's been some time since we said goodbye
now we lead our separate lives
But where am I? Where can I go?
Driving alone to a movie show --
so in tune with the sounds in my car ...
There´s a band playing on the radio
And it´s drowning the sound of my tears"

-----

from "Editions of You" off "For Your Pleasure"

"Love me.
Leave me.
Do what you will --
Who knows what tomorrow might bring?
'Learn from your mistakes' is my only advice,
and 'stay cool' is still my main rule."

--------

from "All I Want Is You" off "Country Life"

"Somebody told me
just the other day
That you´re leaving me --
we´re through.
Well, if you knew
how that hurt me so
then you´d change your mind
I´m sure ..."

-------

Take care, Sterling. And good luck for the future.

stripey, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Just put X's "How I Learned My Lesson" on the tape back to back......for 40 minutes.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'future luv' by presence (particularly the Herbert mix) is a killer for me.

and 'new day' by round two (main street) gets me in that melancholy mood.

tylero, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Morrison, "Slim Slow Slider"

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Leonard Cohen, "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong"

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

there's this song by The Breeders called Off You. and it didn't really speak to my situation at the time, but when i broke with my boyfriend a long time ago, i just played it over and over again. it hit this sorrowful note that i just needed to get through.
