Five for Fighting - "Superman"

That one melodic hook in the verse ("I can't stand to fly") oddly manages to be really memorable and pretty and kind of touching. It loses it a bit in the chorus but that bit kept echoing in my head after I heard it in the background of some crap TV thing. It almost makes me ready to buy into the navel-gazing.

And apparently Journey is one of his seminal influences!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the most awful recordings ever committed to tape. All involved should be deeply, deeplay ashamed of themselves. Actually, incarceration without the slightest hope of parole for those responsible is probably in order.

This song was like a treacly mashup of Creed and Bread.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Gothy ILMers in hating popular AOR shocker!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's fourth that assessment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Call me a "gothy ILM"'er if that makes you feel better, Dan, but the fact remains -- Five For Fighting make indefensibly bad music, be you a fan of Christian Death or fuckin' Hanson.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

also, this isn't AOR, it's Active Rock

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

and it sucks ducks off dumptrucks

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

and it sucks ducks off dumptrucks

Don't know what that means, exactly, but it certainly sounds accurate.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(hee hee Alex missed the implicit bit where I agreed with him)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I still believe this song's success is karma for me liking "Walking In Memphis" enough as a kid that I bought Marc Cohn's album.

I can't believe I once owned a Marc Cohn album, and this song was designed to remind me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I about ran off the road when I heard a college radio station playing this song in December 2001. It prompted a long rant on a message board about the death and burial and cremation and fucking ashes-pissed-on-and-eaten-by-wild-dogs demise of college radio.

Even the songs you hate the most have something about them that you can joke about or make fun of. But there's just nothing funny about this song. The only possible response is bile and hatred.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, when he says "I'm not that naive" you can imitate being kicked in the nuts. That's funny shit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I love when I'm the only person willing to say something good (and it was even pretty mild) about popular crap-rock. I still stand by that one hook. I didn't mind "Walking In Memphis" either at the time.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Walking In Memphis"

Oh man, good times. My dad loves that one. Anybody remember "Picture Postcards from LA?"

I had a dream where my ninth-grade geometry teacher led our class out to a wide-open field on a sunny day and had us join hands and sing this song. It was kind of beautiful
