Alter-Ego Bands?

XTC -------> the Dukes of Stratosphear
the Damned --------> Naz Nomad & the Nitemares
The Mission ------> the Metal Gurus
Redd Kross -------> the Anarchy 6
Love & Rockets -------> the Bubblemen
REM ------> Bingo Hand Job
Blue Oyster Cult ------> Soft White Underbelly
the Cure -------> Cult Hero

Alright, the last three are simply pseudonyms as opposed to the first five (different stylistic incarnations/presentations), but the fact remains -- the bands are ulimately the same despite the name.

Others?

Blue Oyster Cult were Soft White Underbelly first right? (sorta like saying The Beatles --------> The Silver Beetles). R.E.M. used to play under dozens of aliases, until Buck got the divorce, moved to Seattle (never a smart move)(look at Holmgren)

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Spinal Tap ---------> The Folksmen

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult would still make club appearances under that name, however, even in their short lived stadium-years.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 July 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Folksmen

Thamesmen surely?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 July 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Masked Marauders -----> Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, etc.

OK, not really. But that was the story. (They were really something called the Cleanliness and Godliness Band -- friends of Greil Marcus, sez AMG.) Some of the songs are pretty funny imitations, though.

In the same vein: Klaatu -----> The Beatles

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

All the members of Oxes have simultaneously been in Long Live Death, but never at the same time and always with a pile of other people, so maybe they don't count. Also Oxes + Cass McCombs -------> Cass McCombs (the same way Beck + Flaming Lips ------> Beck).

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Housemartins used to open for themselves (doing only a cappella stuff) under the name The Fishy Five.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)
