I may be wrong, but I don't think this has done before.

What songs should I/shouldn't I look for?

James Morris (HorrayJames), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Assume x = T. Rex, as well it should. Go from there.

More logically, all T. Rex albums from the self-titled through Zinc Alloy and all singles from that time period. Bowie, Hunky Dory through Diamond Dogs. Roxy Music, self-titled debut through Stranded. A Sweet, a Slade and a Suzi Quatro best-of. Breaking it down by songs would take me forever and I have pasta to make, so I'll leave that to better people than I.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Look What the Cat Dragged In - Poison

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 July 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount is accurate. On that level, Hysteria and Coming Up as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: "Rocket" video for major connect the dots action

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

possible thread: is Bolan the biggest shoutout recipient in rock lyric historee?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought stuff like Posion and Def Leppard wasn't technically glam rock since they weren't part of that whole scene.

Other than that, any specific song reccomendations?

James Morris (HorrayJames), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - The Human Menagerie [and] The Psychomodo
(Check out "Sebastian" from Menagerie and The Psychomodo's title cut)
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes, Mott, and The Hoople
("Hymn for the Dudes" and "I Wish I Was Your Mother" off Mott are two of my all-time faves)
Mick Ronson - Slaughter on 10th Avenue
(I love his Newley/Bowie take on "Love Me Tender")

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Trash" and "Personality Crisis" -- The New York Dolls

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sub-question

What songs would be good to being and end a glam rock compilation?

James Morris (HorrayJames), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hello Hello (It's Good to be Back)" and "Tumbling Down"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Blockbuster" by Sweet is the all-time winner.

Basically just go buy anything ever produced by Chinn/Chapman.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

NY Dolls - s/t, In Too Much Too Soon
a good Mudd collection
Sweet - Desolation Blvd., Give Us A WInk
I to endorse the Bowie, Mott, T.Rex, Roxy Music (especially anything with Eno)
avoid Gary Glitter

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

If you are really desperate you can turn to Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals. And I guess, in some twisted way, Transformer is kinda glam.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Would I be pelted with rocks and garbage if I suggested that Todd Rundgren's A Wizard A True Star might be appropriate?

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"slayed?" by slade! (and cum on feel tha noize.) everything by t rex but you knew i would say that. roxy music "for your pleasure". i admit i am not familiar with many works by bowie but i mean to be! "dirty rotten filthy stinkin rich" by warrant (also ups to poison and def fucking leppard who i have been listening to too much - hysteria and pyromania are grebt). suzi quatro, gary glitter THE SWEEEEEEEEEEETTTTT! (blockbuster is a fantastic song).

on a more local note, nz's glam band space waltz are worth looking into, their LP has just been reissued on CD, and features their fabulous hit "out on the street" which is presently one of my favourite songs ever. alastair riddell of space waltz was a big bowie fan and boy did he shock everyone here in the 1970s by camping it up all over a family-oriented talent-search tv show *swoon*. ROCKY HORROR ROCKY HORROR richard o'brien baby.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

if Poison et al are admissible let's give it up for for Hanoi Rocks and early Guns N'Roses!

I'll also stick up for most of the first Suede album, especially the singles.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You can call me a heretic but The Velvet Goldmine soundtrack is also pretty cool. Lots of cool glam covers.

glam rock was invented in hackney in 1947 — that is all

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I have had this argument re: what is glam rock with someone for a year; they swear that it's Poison and all those hair metal bands from the 80's, I claim that that music, though perhaps inspired by glam rock, is quantifiably different and NOT glam. So, no, no Guns 'N Roses, no Poison. Just because a band wore makeup doesn't make them glam, otherwise we'd have to count KISS and Michael Jackson.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

though perhaps inspired by glam rock

There's no perhaps about it! Poison in particular -- Rikki R. especially -- are old glam fiends, just the same as, say, Bauhaus were.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But is it the style or the music? Because when I listen to Poison (admittedly, never) I don't get anything like the vibe I get from the Sweet or early Eno or Bowie or Roxy or Gary Glitter. I don't hear it. Maybe it's a US/UK thing come to think of it.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

So is early Queen not glam rock? No one has listed anything by them, so I begin to wonder.

earlnash, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You can call me a heretic but The Velvet Goldmine soundtrack is also pretty cool. Lots of cool glam covers.

Soundtrack much better than movie, for sure. Fyi (if you dint know already): Venus in Furs = Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

So is early Queen not glam rock?

Doesn't legend have it Bowie wrote "Queen Bitch" for Freddie and Freddie wrote "Killer Queen" for the gnome?

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I put together this glam comp last night partly with stuff I know and stuff that was reccomended. I thought it came out pretty well.

1. Gary Glitter - I'm The Leader Of The Gang (Yes I Am!)
2. Sweet - Ballroom Blitz
3. Cockney Rebel - Sebastion
4. Bryan Ferry - A Hard Rains-A Gonna Fall
5. Slade - Coz I Luv You
6. Queen - Keep Yourself Alive
7. Lou Reed - Perfect Day
8. Mud - Tiger Feet
9. Brian Eno - The True Wheel
10. New York Dolls - Trash
11. Mott The Hoople - All The Way From Memphis
12. David Bowie - Queen Bitch
13. Suzi Quatro - If You Can't Give Me Love
14. Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home A Heartache
15. T.Rex - Hot Love

James Morris (HorrayJames), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

hot love = perfect way to end.

eight months pass...
I just noticed this half-assed glam-rock revival piece I wrote for LA Weekly several years ago was on line, so I'm posting the link here:

chuck, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if Poison et al are admissible let's give it up for for Hanoi Rocks and early Guns N'Roses!

Even ifn't, Hanoi are the ultimate glam rock band, since they stole 16 measures from everyone else who ever teased a follicle.

Special love for Wizzard, for glitter beards. Thanks.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No one seems to have mentioned The Glitter Band, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Hello, The Rubettes, Showaddywaddy, Alvin Stardust....

Alice Cooper, Status Quo and Thin Lizzy were contemporaries and certainly overlapped in terms of fan base at very least; and let's not forget that Elton John and Rod Stewart both had a distinct glam phase too!

Would you count Barry Blue, The Bay City Rollers, Chicory Tip, Carl Douglas, David Dundas, Geordie, Kenny, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Slik, 10CC or Tonight as Glam?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rollers maybe.

Not sure about Showaddywaddy being Glam though.

Haven't read the whole thread but I hope these have been namechecked:

Judy Teen - Cockney Rebel
Stardust - David Essex
Seven Seas of Rye - Queen (I think so)
This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us - Sparks
The In-Crowd - Bryan Ferry

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, David Essex had at very least a glam phase.

"Not sure about Showaddywaddy being Glam though"

Well, musically they were heavily rooted in 50's Rock 'n' Roll sure; but then so were Mud, Gary Glitter, Alvin Stardust....; and their image was far too vividly over-the-top caricature / pastiche for them to be considered a straight revival band.

That reminds me - what about Darts?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the Heavy Metal Kids?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Darts were pure revivalists. Made some terrific records though.

I discount Showaddywaddy because they never had the obligatory sexually dubious member like Mud and Sweet (and Slade too, Dave Hill wore some poncey outifts).

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

OK then, well according to your theory there would have needed to be something "sexually dubious" about Gary Glitter, and....

OK, point taken.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us - Sparks

excellent choice.

i wonder if we'll see a glam-rock revival, in the wake of the success of the darkness? or just a lot of hawkins-wannabees?

does 'ziggy stardust' count as glam? i think perhaps it does. and no mention of wolverhampton's finest - roy wood and wizzard - yet. there, that's that rectified, then. i don't know whether you'd want to listen to a whole album of their stuff, though.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Bartram of Showaddywaddy (far right) looking particularly butch....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Bartram does look a bit of a dandy.

wolverhampton's finest - roy wood and wizzard

First single I ever bought was "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" - I got a 45p record token for Xmas and it was a choice between that or "My Coo-Ca-Choo" by Alvin Stardust. Did I make the right choice?

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

First single I ever bought was "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" - I got a 45p record token for Xmas and it was a choice between that or "My Coo-Ca-Choo" by Alvin Stardust. Did I make the right choice?

its a tough call. you did miss the lyric

'cool
cat
you're where its at
come on, let's go to my flat
and lay down and groove on the mat
oh won't you be my coo-ca-choo'.

i'll leave you to decide on whether that was a good thing. 45p? goodness. when i was young, records where a whopping 75 PENCE!

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think that the big "45" printed on Motown single labels in those days was the price.

anyone seen that glam compilation in the shops?

Glam Sandwich & Electro Flares

is glam getting a belated comeback?

or is it a compilation in search of a scene?

that rebel rule song was always a hidden classic though.

danny boy (danny boy), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

is glam getting a belated comeback?

The new Kasabian single sounds exactly like The Sweet produced by Mike Leander. I'm sure they intended a Stone Roses/Led Zep hybrid but didn't quite have the chops to make it. All the better for it too.
