Michelle Branch - Classic or Dud?

My girlfriend: Michelle Branch is a good singer, but she doesn't pick her songs very well.
Me: You realize she writes her own, right?
My girlfriend: Yeah.

I don't think there are any threads devoted to her, or at least none that aren't also devoted to Vanessa and Avril. This is probably because she's the least interesting of the three. I'm going to give the standard opinion that she's a very limp songwriter, but has anyone heard her new single? It's much closer to Alanis than Avril ever was.

I have a soft spot for Michelle. I dug her song about how she can take you away from here and her new one doesn't kill me. Frankly, I hope she'll do more Miami Sound Machine stuff like that Santana collabo. I can't call her classic yet, but she's way less dud than Vanessa.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Michelle Branch is very young, but I'm calling her the most interesting of the lot. The new album is really consistent! Extra points for realizing that she is what she is, a teenaged pop singer-songwriter, and for not being too "cool" to appear on Nickelodeon shows.

Fun to fight w/Miccio about Good Charlotte; more fun to agree w/him about MB!

Neudonym, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it's always more fun to be right than to be wrong, dude.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

and thus is my olive branch rebuffed. Okay, Miccio, it's back on again! RRRRRRUUUUMMMMMMBBBBBLLLLEEEEE!!!!!

Neudonym, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna call _Paper Hotel_ MB's _Tuesday Night Music Club_ (which is a good thing) (in that both records, to me, are laid back, casual, & charming in a bullshit-free manner, which I know is nonsense but I can't explain the voibe any other way) (& I include the missteps & awkward moments in my assessment, & the first single might qualify as such a faux pas) (& she even got over some of her MES-like vocal hiccups, which is a BIG plus) (& while her Santana collaboration is OK - & calling that song a Miami Sound Machine soundalike is a big ol' misstep & awkward moment, Anthony - it'd be better if it didn't sound like every other nu-Santana track) (the best of which, I've come to realize, out of the radio singles, is the Rob Thomas collab).

I worked as assistant on Hotel Paper (see title track) and I can attest to the fact that she's super talented for her age. Really sweet person, too!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of a single song of hers I've heard that I dislike.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

All I ask is this; when she's in that big expensive studio spending hella record company dollaz on making whatever record is coming next, please for the love of God skip the General MIDI Acoustic Piano patch and use an actual friggin piano!!! That is all.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to give the standard opinion that she's a very limp songwriter, but has anyone heard her new single? It's much closer to Alanis than Avril ever was.

And this is a good thing?

Michelle's songs are pleasantly okay but ultimately kind of forgettable. I would say she's a post-millenial Debbie Gibson, but she's yet to write anything as good as "Only in My Dreams" or even "Shake Your Love"!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"All You Wanted" is as good as "Only In My Dreams" and the melody/breath support of "Are You Happy Now?" are fantastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"All You Wanted" is as good as "Only In My Dreams"

Carefully phrased.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"I can't think of a single song of hers I've heard that I dislike."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But the comparison is so beautifully multipurpose.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Are you now or have you ever been a Michelle Branch fan?"

"Well, let's take another look at that statement...."

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And this is a good thing?

Well, more an observation than anything.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that song with Santana is really kind of magical - and that vocal hook when she's doing "'cause right now I.." gives me shivers. honestly!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"All You Wanted" is as good as "Only In My Dreams"

This is as bizarre a claim as the one about "U Got It Bad" not being an uncharismatic miasma of meh.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really know her, but I'm thinking there's no way she's "Classic" under any circumstances.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the new single, but I recommend downloading "Here With Me" off the last album - it's like the missing link between Britney & Avril! Phat Cheiron beat, lovely melodramatic Matrix chorus.

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

she ain't no vanessa carlton

bob snoom, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't buy her CD, unless, like everything i buy, it was in the sale bins. i really like her though. her song with carlos santana was my favourite pop song of the summer.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

and if i have to compare her with the other female pop singer-songwriters, yeah, i dig her better. her melodies are prettier. i have a sneaking suspicion that avril can't actually play guitar, vanessa carlton is boring and has a godawful voice.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

vanessa carlton's wordless vocalese in that counting crows single is right up there with nelly furtardo's WV in that ms jade single!

(michelle hasn't really impacted on me yet - none of the chorus-snippets on the album-promoting ad have triggered anything, oddly)

vanessa carlton is the dawson's cecil taylor and i will not hear a word said against her

seven months pass...

I had many conversations about his guru... and he confessed to me that after he first got involved... began to wonder if -<redacted>- was the anti-Christ. "I'm still not sure," he said, "but I plan to stick around until I find out."

i feel this way about michelle branch sometimes. or maybe just gregg alexander

The first year Adult Swim was on Cartoon Network, they didn't really have a set of advertisements targeted at adults yet. So you'd get random toy ones, pseudo-informercials, and notable... an ad for Target where they stated "come to Target and buy Michelle Branch's new album!" accompanied by clips from that video.

Due to the low number of commercials, I think we got to see that commercial at least twice per ad break

my wife played the first two albums a LOT for the first few years after we met. can't say i love either, but the second one is ultimately the best.
