playing into the (negative) reviewer's hands

staind's album is called "14 shades of grey"? that kind of album title is simply a gift to reviewers who don't like staind (and there are quite a few). i can't think of any other artist who has named their album in a way that begs to be made fun of like this. it's like sterephonics naming their record "meat and potatoes"...what makes a band do such a thing?

Isn't the origin of Daft Punk's name something akin to this?

Artist plays into negative reviewers' hands -> Critics lazily take bait ("Staind's new album: 14 shades of dull") -> Cheap shots become very tedious to read -> Reviewers are criticized for their lazy write-offs -> Band members give selves much pity -> Staind still suck

And they get to sing about it all on the next record

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So you see it's actually the other way around. WE MUST STOP STAIND BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

I think we had a thread like this already. I remember reading a review (i forgot who wrote it) for Happy Mondays' Yes Please that simple replied "No Thanks."

The Lollies were going to call their album "Suck" after a particularly virulent Swells review - so reviewers could choose whether to refer to it as "Suck The Lollies" or "The Lollies Suck" - but then someone pointed out that The Lemonheads had already done this. Sigh.

(So we ripped off the Telescopes instead cause no one would ever think of that...)

The Average White Band and APB (originally Another Punk Band) didn't wait for album titles to get their defence mechanisms in place.

five months pass...
Aptly titled singles/albums

I swear there's a thread from 2001 about this but I can't find it.

Anyway I think the clear winner here is Nas's "One Mic".
