Whats the general opinion on Suede on this board? I have NO idea why, but I find them extremely enjoyable. While I shouldn't like his voice and dont' generally enjoy the britpop genre, I just really dig this band. What do other people think?

Bryan Moore, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd mostly forgotten they existed. i'm undecided how i feel now that i've been reminded.

Why shouldn't you like his voice? After Bernard left, his voice was the best thing they had going for them. I don't listen to them a whole lot, but whenever I get around to putting that first album on it still grabs me. "So Young" is a monster.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC. Also, I like how Peter Saville actually appears on the cover for the "Film Star" single.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Twits. Insanely, laughably bad in every way.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

You took the words right out of my mouth, Dr C

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I did?

How to make a Swide song :

You need some lyrics, these'll do : "Shike, shike, shike like a monkey/on the electric gasoline"

Next - a cod Mick Ronson riff with some strategically placed slightly off-key lead breaks (but not *too* off-key) to show that, you know, we're 'edgy' man.

'Rhythm' section - oh fuck what should we do with them! All bands, like, *have* bass and drums, but what are they for? I know! Forget the bass, let's mix him down so we can't hear him. And the drummer - what do indie-glam drummers do?

Production - all frequencies below mid-range strictly forbidden! Make the guitar very loud otherwise Bernard or the Bernard impersonator kid will sulk.

The interview - "I was born in a council estate in Hayward's Heath but I was fascinated with Bowie from the age of 3. I used to bunk off school and go up to Lan-dahn knowing that one day I'd be a star like...like, er Bowie"

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And that's all bad how?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The more Brett begins to resemble Morten Harket, the shitter they get.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked every album up through "Coming Up". After that they became kind of cringeworthy. Although some would argue that they have been from the beginning, but I disagree.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

---> dr c.

that is true for the latter part of their carreer. they've become self-parodic. it is as if brett anderson is obsessed with being 'pop' in contradiction to the grandeur of bernard butler days. you can't touch their first three albums, though. one of the best gigs i've ever seen was suede in '95, after the release if dog man star. fucking epic, man.

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic with Bernard, merely good since. Bernard's 1st solo effort was as good, if not better than anything Suede did, but the second was absolutely horrible overproduced MOR dreck, IMHO.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the first 3 are superb. especially "dog man star". yes, brett's lyrical schtick went into self-parody very quickly, but this is easily ignored. such great pop songs - "the drowners", "the wild ones". i can't help but be swept away in the drama of it all. i think "head music" is underrated, too.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

head music's shite. but you are OTM about the first 3 ones ...

Jay K (Jay K), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

First album very good. "Sound of McAlmont & Butler" is a far better record than "Dog Man Star"

bham, Thursday, 10 July 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

they did new songs at glasto.

Spoonered (Spoonered), Thursday, 10 July 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Lynskey = Brett will NEVER resemble the Godlike Morten Harket - Jesus, Morten's the finest looking man who's ever graced the planet. Brett...well.... isn't.

I missed their Glastonbury set, but heard it was rather sad and depressing.

I didn't buy the last album (cut price at Fopp everywhere nowadays), but 'Head Music' was a perfectly acceptable, accessible pop record. Both Head Music and Coming Up are FANTASTIC records, as are the first 2 albums.

Suede rival the Pet Shop Boys for most orgasmic artwork, too (apart from the last album - the ugly disc sleeve). Savile's a God. Best sleeve? 'Head Music' I reckon - beautiful.

russ t, Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Wathing the Glasto set on TV was sad... not exactly a band at their peak and they duffed up the chance for a proper greatest hits set by playing some stinkers.

Spoonered (Spoonered), Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

u shoulda been there. it was way worse.
*what* were they doing there on that stage at that time ?
our kid was the girl on someone's shoulders
at the end of the tv footage that
the camera leered at for a good 10 seconds.
she looked ace. her t shirt was the never-officially-released
brite pink and grey 'gayanimalsex' one.

'wild ones' was alright though.

piscesboy, Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Head Music is glorious, the hatred people have for it completely baffles me. It's Suede-gone-chromey and glistening and silver and a kind of genius celebration of metal/plastic sheeny funkering. People hate Head Music but they HATE Savoir Faire, and Savoir Faire really is the kind of life-affirmingly magnificent clockworky strut that Elastica were so ace at and it goes all skyscraping in the middle and then it clicks back into sync for the remainder of the track and it's so neat-o and precise and ice-cream, what's to hate? I don't care that it's a posture-y album and I love love love the fact that they were trying to be Prince.

I didn't really bother with A New Morning, I was disappointed that they'd let the Head Music criticisms knock them off course so completely. The first three Suede albums were all very godlike too, possibly even more so than Head Music. But I dunno. I really do love Head Music.

(This isn't a Head Music thread, I apologise)

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dog Man Star is probably the record people I like most consistently overrate.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

dog man star is glorious, end of story. 'the power'. 'the wild ones'. 'we are the pigs'. 'asphalt world'. 'hollywood life'. classics, the lot of them. 'asphalt world' is one of the best songs i have ever heard played live. this record can't be touched, it was the peak af thair carreer and deep down inside, brett a. knows it...

Jay K (Jay K), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

For sheeny glistening pop brilliance, Suede could never top Coming Up. Dog Man Star is great in parts, too heavy and leaden sounding in others. We Are the Pigs is a staggeringly great single, though.

russ t, Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, of course, the fact that "Still Life" ends with 2 minutes of the theme from "Lace" sums the band up perfectly...

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Head Music is greater than most people realize, Dog Man Star is worse. Coming Up is still the best album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh alright then, they're fantastic.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! Now, Corgan...

(On a side note, I got the Royal Family and the Poor reissues sent to me the other day -- what should I expect?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

DESTROY!
