Treat as Classic or Dud / Search and Destroy at your discretion.

I ask this mainly because this is one of few bands whose primary works have steadily risen in my opinion over the many years since their release, even now that I've lost interest in their current projects. They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons strikes me, more and more, as everything a great record should be.

Dis/agree?

I think I saw these guys/girls in a tiny bar in Westchester Cty, NY about 10 years ago. I have no memory of the show.

My Swirlies show memory happend 2 years ago. At the Middle East, opening for Marine Research. Damn, they were loud - one of the folks I met up with was actually bent over, covering his ears, grimacing in pain. (I think he was there primarily for the Marine Research.) Lots of noise, somewhat reminiscent of MBV, perhaps. It was great hearing Seana's cooing cut through the decidedly agressive maelstrom the other musicians were making. Impressive.

And the offshoots of the band - ah, many a day I am thankful for Syrup USA and Victory at Sea. Seana's solo stuff, however, sounds like watered-down Mary Timony - live, it didn't sound good at all.

Classic on the basis of Blonder Tongue Audio Baton and They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons, which at the time seemed like the only relevant American answers to the shoegazer sound (Medicine's output could probably be grouped in here too, although I dont feel like talking about them nor do I want to usurp the thread).

The idea of a bunch of American kids trying to record Loveless with thrift store Silvertones and Casios on a Tascam 4 track seems insane, but somehow it works, and I don't think they were merly aping MVB. Sweet pop songs abruptly shift into heavy metal riffs and then wind down into a low-fi buzz, and by some miracle it all manages to fit together.

Rumor has it that recent Swirlies output has been less that stellar (I wouldn't know), but the past records are still in heavy rotation at my house and I imagine they will be for quite a while. I think time has shown the Swirles to be a lot more interesting than most of the shoegazers they were supposedly imitating. I know I don't spend much time listenting to Lush or Curve anymore.

I'm completely with you, Miranda: they seemed to get lumped, initially, in the shoegazer outpouring, but with every year that goes by, I realize how much better -- and how different -- those two records are from the rest of that scene. I think it was that Boston element coming through -- an odd convergence of the MBV influence and the Boston Pixies/Muses/whoever axis.

The recent material has, indeed, been silly. And it's not even "recent," really -- a lot of it seems to be old junk that they never got around to doing anything with. There were a couple of tracks on that remix album, though, that were fantastic, even if the concept and the product as a whole were embarrassing.

FYI: here's the official Swirlies web presence.

David Raposa, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they claimed that none of them owned a copy of 'loveless' which made sense to my ears since they seemed to do a far better job apeing 'isn't anything' anyhow. 'sarah sitting' is an all time classic, so is their sonic youth tribute 'park the car by the side of the road' but blonder was a bit of a dud(high expectations falling flat). salons is classic all the way through(low expectations greatly surpassed). the last cd was a bad joke.

two months pass...
I wouldn't recommend as a whole the LP they put under the Yes Girls name, the orange one, if a couple of EXCELLENT songs weren't on it. I'm talking about Indian Ocean Nosedive and One Light flashing I love You. Pure pop perfection, please give it a listen. I agree Glittering World of the Salons remains a masterpiece. In part because Christina Files, the girl who turns everything she touches into gold, sang and played guitar in it. :) As Bob Weston said, "[Salons] is the best unheard record of the 90s".

I don't understand the lack of web sites dedicated to this terrific band. Grr.

I'll agree with the sentiment that They Spent.. is quite underrated, and was too quickly dismissed by people who were burnt out on MBV-like bands. Even more underrated are certain tracks off the pink remix release...

But a grossly more underrated band is Timonium.. who are an San Francisco/Los Angeles band that has combined some of that shoegaziness with some rather stunning droney low-key dynamics. Suspende Animation is quite nice. See Timonium live whenever you can. Two other related bands from the South Bay/Orange County area are September and We Are Not Going To Stand For This.

seven years pass...

Thinking about taking Blonder Tongue Audio Baton to the used shop this weekend.

Is it worth keeping???

ilxor, Saturday, 28 February 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

Well, rip it at least. (I mean, I presume everyone does that with their CDs now.)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 February 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

I just saw the Swirlies last night! It was pretty cool. They fucked up the beginnings of some of the songs and had to start over, but they did it in a charming way. I wish it could have been slightly louder, but overall, really solid.

jonathan - stl, Saturday, 28 February 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

saw them live last night, it was ... okay. kinda fun. lots of false starts and messing around with equipmnt though.

xpost - lol, what he said

(I mean, I presume everyone does that with their CDs now.)

Honestly... I really don't. I figure if I'm disinterested enough to sell something, what's the point in ripping it? In fact I already have all my stuff ripped. If I were to sell it, I'd rid myself of the mp3s as well. What's the point in selling it, but not *REALLY* getting rid of it?

ilxor, Saturday, 28 February 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

(I realize I'm probably alone in this line of thinking.)

ilxor, Saturday, 28 February 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

As the years go by, I more and more wish that they'd had better vocals. The "we're in college!" sound of the singing puts me off increasingly as I get older.

Nonetheless, I'd keep it: they had better hooks than most of their US competition and when they pop up on shuffle my ears always perk up.

dlp9001, Saturday, 28 February 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

their slumberland 45 is one of the greatest singles of the 90s imo

blonder tongue could only be a disappointment after it but it holds up surprisingly well to me now

w/ sax (electricsound), Saturday, 28 February 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

Blonder gets much better as the album progresses... "Jeremy Parker" and "Park the car by the side of the road" are pretty stellar.

They Spent is still their greatest achievement.

electricsound, others,

Does anybody know anything about this "Blue Bunny" compilation?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=330533815295&nma=true&rt=nc&si=lQ5PZuaQHoNzYtLQHbgShqKqGtA%253D#ht_1761wt_1141

It recently sold in a 7" bundle on ebay aside from the above listing, but I can't find it listed in Damon's "Collectors discography" or discogs.

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Friday, 1 April 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

I have that 7"... It came with a zine called Flygirl and features these tracks:

Dennis Callaci - Back Up
John Davis - 300 Bags of Two Target Practice
Lou Barlow - Riding
Stuffd Bear - My But It's Warm Today, Isn't It?
Ruby Falls - Hi Blue Bunny
Swirlies - Indian Ocean Nosedive
Juke-Box Hero - Salt

Pretty sure the same version of "Indian Ocean Nosedive" is on "Cats of the Wild."

spastic heritage, Friday, 1 April 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

Oh Ok, thanks!! Love that song.

Okay I could have sworn there was some more recent Swirlies chat, but no matter.

So, someone on D1me@d0z3n has uploaded their cache of Swirlies live stuff, they were all pretty short so I packaged them together, can't see many people other than Evan perhaps being interested in this, but what the heck...
