Does "I Think I'm Goin' out of My head" count?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Partial decapitation:

The Monkees - "Tear the Top Right Off My Head"

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Voltaire - "The Headless Waltz."

janni (janni), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacques Brel/Sensational Alex Harvey Band/Scott Walker - "Next"
("One day I'll cut my legs off...")

Well, foolish me. For some reason I always thought that decapitation was the cutting off on any limbs, not the head specifically. Hrmph.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Foolish you indeed - English not your first language?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Before Timothy Leary passed away*, his plan was to have a gigantic party on New Year's Eve 1999, and when the ball dropped, he was going to have his head chopped off and cryogenically frozen right then and there. I wrote a song about that and how it never got to happen called "Timmy". So there you go.

*The same day this happened (before I learned of his death) I had bought a hit of blotter acid going by the tag "Timothy Leary" (cuz it came from a sheet with a pic of his face on it); literally 10 minutes after we drop, the news comes on all "Timothy Leary died today"...my mind = blown. Then the shit started kicking in. I wrote that song "Timmy" that night as I came down.

Al Bernard and his Goofus Five, "Hesitation Blues," 1927: "Russia is a mean old place, they'll chop off your head and throw it in your face."; Julie Andrews "All I want is 'enry 'iggins' 'ead" in *My Fair Lady*; Guns N Roses find head in a trash can in "Double Talkin' Jive," 1991; Johnny Wakelin and the Kinshasa Band praise famous boxer knocking heads off in "Black Superman -- Muhammad Ali," from 1975.

And doesn't Hasil Adkins have, like, THREE songs where he cuts off women's heads so then they can't eat no more hot dogs?? I think so.

(For other body parts, see *Despite All the Amputations* chapter in my second book, if you're really interested.)

they'll chop off your head and throw it in your face

I am truly astounded by this lyric. It might be the best thing ever written.

Before Timothy Leary passed away*
Offtopic but still a great anecdote: Timothy Leary's last words...
(to no-one in particular)
"Why?"
(with a slight edge of dissappointment and sadness in his voice)
"Why?....Why?....Why?"
(long pause as a flash of revelation crosses his face and the dread dissolves. He begins to grin broadly.)
"Why NOT?....YEEEAAAAH!"
(and he gives up the ghost)

"Cut Off Your Arm" by Sockeye owns this thread. I quote:

Cut off your arm
Cut off your fuckin' arm
Teacher, teacher, teacher, cut off your arm

Who could forget these immortal lines?

"I’m gonna break his legs off
I’m gonna rip his head off
And then shit down his neck
And then I’ll laugh like a motherfucker
And then I’ll laugh like a motherfucker"

(Al Jourgenson, naturally)

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And a wilfully sinister reading of "Head Over Heels" might also qualify ..

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And certainly there must be some Robyn Hitchcockian instance of whimsical dismemberment?

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And oh yes: Momus, "His Majesty the Baby" !!!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry I, promise, last one: Harry Chapin

"It was then he lost his head / Not to mention an arm or two / Before he stopped"

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Till My Head Falls Off", They Might Be Giants
