Album Covers: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION as means of Self-Mythologizing!

Based somewhat on this thread (http://www.ilxor.com/newanswers.php?board=2), please cite album covers wherein the band are counting on the surrounding ambiance of the locale to lend them some sort've cred/creedence/"hardness"/cache (i.e. make some sort've impression that is not necessarily well-founded)

Like so....

The thread I was alluding to, of course, was this one...
Covers of press pictures with stars in houses where they have absolutely never been before and most likely will never go again

I've been waiting forever to use this one:

the park is not strictly on this cover as a location per se, but they're borrowing cred from it anyway.

Alex surely the point of that Jackson Browne cover is that as hard as he tries, he *doesn't* quite fit in!

"So what if we are internationally renowed rock stars with a penchant for libidinous excess and heroic booze consumption? We'd rather stay in this down-to-earth, gritty flea-bag hotel, instead of the sprawling five star sky-scraper across town, `cos we're a down-to-earth, gritty band, us! No need for room service or fancy bathtubs for us, nope! Notice the name of the hotel? Pretty nifty coincidence, eh?"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

further to the Avril cover:

"Hey look, I'm in that Alanis video, y'know the one where she's naked but has her dirty parts blurred? Look I'm in that video. Only I'm fully clothed."

not self-mythologizing but

what's important to note is that holcomb actually had a nice, neat, newly-painted house just off to the left but the photographer (john cohen) chose to take his picture in front of his dilapidated wooden shack.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex surely the point of that Jackson Browne cover is that as hard as he tries, he *doesn't* quite fit in!

Maybe so, but I don't think the cover picture reflects that interpretation at all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, amateurist, what part of the title of this thread do you not get? I'm talking about cover IMAGES! If you didn't know the title to this record, would that picture honestly tell you anything?

Look, I know you got your knickers in a twist when you tried to go after Chuck Eddy the other day and it didn't totally come out your way, but that doesn't give you the green light to go pissing around on other people.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the title of the album IS part of the cover design...

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

in Browne's case, the title is the punchline to the picture.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist is a known fun-hater! In either case, I do think that images of artists in crowded street-scenes are almost always about exceptionalism, and not-blending in. That goes for the Avril twice as much as the Browne, of course: "I am apart! I am special! I am surrounded by the faceless irrelevant masses within which I will always stand out, due to my being extraordinary, as symbolized here by my wearing a white shirt / not being blurry."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah, sure we've had a few successful records, and have been played on MTV, and have had Madonna court us with nude photos of herself to try to lure us over to Maverick, but we're still scummy street punks, dammit! And it makes perfect sense for us to be hanging out on East Village stoops and moping around like junkies! No really!"
