I just downloaded Primal Scream's "Velocity Girl" and goddamnit it's really good! I wasn't expecting much, but wow, this is catchy stuff. I can't believe it's Primal Scream-- it sounds nothing like the later stuff. Sure, it's nothing original but it's made me very happy!

So does "Sonic Flower Groove" sound like this? Any other Primal Scream recommendations in this vein?

"Ivy Ivy Ivy" would be your best bet, I'd guess. And yeah, you'd probably like Sonic Flower Groove.

this is the kind of stuff that made me retire my twee star.

i usually don't like this kind of stuff, but somehow I dig this song. also i'm noticing that the song doesn't sound as good if you sandwich it between other songs in a playlist. it only sounds good on repeat. weird.

song i can't stop listening to: Lumidee -- Air To Breathe. It sounds like the best parts of Paul Simon's "Trailways Bus" Xed with Breath In Breath Out.

I like "All Fall Down" and "Crystal Crescent" more than "VG" but they're all classics regardless. Sonic Flower Groove has maybe four great songs (Imperial/Gentle Tuesday/Silent Spring/some other one) and the rest is jangly dross.

sometimes it makes you wonder if primal scream wanted to make 'screamadelica' in the first place..

in retrospect i wish they hadn't. i can't see myself ever listening to it again

no kidding. it's a huge transition. incidentally, Screamadelica is worth listening to again only for "Coming Down." What a great song.

Crystal Crescent - fantastic. I'd recommend getting some Razorcuts stuff (they were part of the same scene, which was very close-knit)...they didn't move on in the way PS did. There's a compilation out on Matinee; if you're interested, I could let you hear some.
