Igor Wakhevich Fractal box

Anyone get this who would like to review it? The few reviews on the net sound like the same hype copied, pasted and rearranged. I'd much rather read opinions on it here before I think of plunking down $65.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

My advice is to plunk down $65. Here's something I wrote about Docteur Faust once, which is contained in that box.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I read that! Problem is, all other reviews are like a small chunk of that review. Yours was the first place I heard about it, actually. That's a good review. Made me want it bad.

But, did you plunk down the $$ for it yet? It seems like it's not "selling like hotcakes," which surprises me, but then I start to think maybe it's good for, like, one listening session of bizarro music enjoyment, but practically speaking, it's something you won't enjoy much.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

dleone, I liked that review! And it was definitely one of the reasons why I started looking for it on-line. I ended up getting it on ebay for $40. And it was well worth it.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Man, I plunked down $90 for it! It was released in '98, and I think it started coming down in price last year. I saw it for $50 one place -- I think on ebay, it might even go for less, I don't know. But it's definitely not something that everyone under the sun is going to enjoy. The best I can tell is that if you like Faust, but don't think they were druggy or orchestral or Moog enough, you will love this box.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 10 July 2003 03:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

x-post, obviously! Thanks, scott

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 10 July 2003 03:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, dleone, you definitely did the world a service with that review. +100 karma pts.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 10 July 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just listened to one track from a WFMU show and afterward, the DJ said he "remembered being disappointed overall by the box set" but he thinks it's one of those situations where the later albums are better... and he played something from the 6th album, which I didn't like. Damn.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 10 July 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

D Leone, I hope you realize, that in writing that review, a new indie kid will discover this music ever day because of you!

(no offense, scaredy cat, I don't mean to imply that you're in indie kid or anything)

I read it on Pitchfork when it was first published it, and it led me to believe it was a record I'd like to hear ONCE. I don't remember what it was about the review that made me believe that, and I'm not going to read it again because it's the sort of thing you only read ONCE.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 10 July 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Faust is an okay comparison point, but these are more narrative bound concept albums, threaded with dirges instead of punctuated with songs. But I'm happy to own this, there's good stuff on each of the discs, even if some of it's a little undistinctive.

there's one fantastic moment worth of pulsing live drums and sequencer on 'Hathor', Disc 3 track 3: 'Rituel De Guerre des Esprits de la Terre'. Reminds me of 'Zero Set' by Moebius/Plank/Neumeier in the best way. ok, playing it now. ok, now we have a shrieking monologue delivered in a cave with electronically simulated thunder for two minutes. ok, now the all-male chorus (still in the cave) hits a massive drone note while synths make squealing noises for about eight minutes. ok now a beautifully recorded, minimal piece for pipe organ. ok I'm totally happy,

Jon L (Jon L), Thursday, 10 July 2003 06:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

the pitchfork write-up was nice indeed.
i had a similar experience, but it was with "Hathor".
while I wish the box was a tad better done (individual sleeve covers for each disc, not just a poster of them all, the discs in blank plastic sleeves) it's worth owning. Believe it to be far out of print too.

abeta, Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

And liner notes in, I don't know, English or something. (BTW, one of my Franc friends has promised to translate them for me.)

Oh yeah, it's out of print all right.

Might be a good investment... the song I heard really stunk up my apartment, though. I guess it would be considered "spatial electronics"; just repetitive synth loops and voices doubled and looped for about 25 minutes or so. Body Lovers, as an example, is similar but way better than what I heard. If there's a lot of that "spatial electronics" stuff in the box, I would be very disappointed. I want A LOT of prog-funk-chamber mixing, not outdated looped ambient soundscapes.

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

SC sounds like that piece you're describing is 'Let's Start' , title track from the last disc, which is very different from anything else in the set. What's 'Body Lovers'? D'you mean that Schulze soundtrack or something else?

Jon L (Jon L), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

It also sounds like you mostly want Logos and Docteur Faust, which are the first two discs.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

you may be disappointed. i don't listen to it nearly as much as i thought i would. when i actually sit down with individual albums, i'm continually finding stuff i like in it, but for the most part it's very droney "spatial electronics" stuff. docteur faust is by far the best disc in the set. i was just hoping there was going to be a lot more rock.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 10 July 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

What's 'Body Lovers'?

M. Gira's project. It's basically one continuous song filling up a CD, but it does have cue points so you can at least get to different sections. The cue points are just numbers, no titles. It's the peaceful acoustic side of the coin and The Body Haters is the electro-noise side. Body Haters is too much for most people, but Body Lovers is something everyone likes.

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 10 July 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

sounds like that piece you're describing is 'Let's Start'

Yup, that was it. The looped voices were saying something like "Let's Start" toward the near-end.

I think I just want Dr. Faust, too. But, can I get it? No!

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 10 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Speaking if M. Gira, I think he is a big fan of Wakhevitch too. (And SC, you need Logos as well - almost good as Dr. Faust, but not as overtly druggy).

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 10 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm certainly more of a fan now upon returning to this set a few years later. It's not consistently mindblowing, which certainly weighed down my initial attempts at ingesting this six album box set, but the peaks are very high.

next time I dj in a sleazy bar (the 22nd) I think this box will be the only thing I bring.

Jon L (Jon L), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

& when I say it's not consistent, I mean the overall set: 'Dr. Faust' and "Hathor' are solid.

Jon L (Jon L), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

So, it's worth it alone for those 2, right? Plus the others have their moments. Cool. Lots of rock on those 2 discs, yes?

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, as much as Wakhevitch is "rock", those two are your best bets. Logos even has a pretty good extended passage featuring an old French prog/improv group Triangle. I happen to agree with Jon L that Hathor and Dr Faust are the best. I think the ones I like least are Nagual and Let's Start.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

still disappointed SC wasn't talking about the film 'Body Love'

Jon L (Jon L), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alrighty then. Thanks so much, I will be listening to this in a week or so, I guess. Can't wait. Should I bust out the reefer madness?

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes. busting out with the reefer madness now.

inna meantime sorry about my last post. my rita mitsouko worship has gone two steps beyond the limits of common decency.

Jon L (Jon L), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

reefer, yes. i def. wouldn't trip to it. the weird incantation shit is VERY heavy, and i wouldn't dabble in it lightly.

abeta, Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

For those who might be interested, a few places still have the Fractal box. Ear-Rational, and Forced Exposure both did at last check, at which time I took the plunge & ordered it from E-R because they beat FE in price by around $30.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

two years pass...
the dali opera as well

Docteur Faust and Hathor definitely need individual reissues outside of the Fractal box

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago) link

jon, did you listen to the dali opera yet? what do you make of it? does it sound "current"? is it worth the download?

jäxøñ (jaxon), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 23:36 (eighteen years ago) link

It's on now, I'm on side four... a lot of time is given over to extended, wacky recitationals all in french and spanish, it's more of a radio play. There are tasty stretches of orchestral writing, organ solos, abstract electronics, but all serving as interludes & soundbeds to the texts.

It's worth hearing after 'Hathor' and 'Faust', which are worth hearing after volumes 2 & 4 of the Takemitsu that mr hero just put up since I posted the link.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 23:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I'm gonna buy this.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, fantastic choral piece on side four, though. slow, weird and beautiful. I'm going to have to rip that to its own track. bad form to post before I've finished listening, I know.

xpost -- I was underwhelmed by the Fractal box after plunking down the money for it at first, but it grew on me and I'm glad I have it now.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 1 June 2006 00:04 (eighteen years ago) link

i can order it wholesale through work, so i can justify it that way. also: ebay in ten years

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Thursday, 1 June 2006 00:08 (eighteen years ago) link

someone emailed me the other day about Etre Dieu - for my money, not as interesting as Wakhevitch's records, though if you're interested in him as a straight ahead composer/orchestrator, sheds his chops in a good light. Definitely "current" I guess.

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 1 June 2006 00:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I can see why the opera is attributed entirely to Dali, it's 90% ranted monologues & dialogues spoken by Dali and pals, with the collaged electronics & sound effects in a support role -- sure wish my French were better. occasional passages of strange Wakhevitch choral music are lovely, and over much too quickly -- gotta get back to Dali talking about what it's like to be God. if you're curious, try disc 2.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 1 June 2006 01:03 (eighteen years ago) link

dali opera is my least fave i. wakhevich stuff and i have lots.
