Has an iPod obsession ruined YOUR relationship?

"My CD and record collection is now pretty much obsolete. Amazingly, I have the entire back catalogue of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Eminem, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis, Blur, REM, The Rolling Stones and, ahem, Will Young in the box — with loads of memory to spare."

From Dominic Mohan's shameless iPod plug in today's Sun... Is that the most ball-achingly predictable, whitest record collection you ever heard??

I've not got an iPod, and i don't think i'm gonna get one, though the fact my hardy CD Walkman gets very choosy about what it likes to play, and skips like a mofo when the spirit takes it, is very frustrating. The idea of uploading all the tracks i want in that sucker gives me the shivers in a second.

it was amazingly, brutally, crushingly dull and nasty wasn't it...
iPods = good
certain "journalists" = evil

Has an iPod obsession ruined YOUR relationship?

i mean, it can't be much of a relationship, can it?

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

if "owners acknowledge one another at the sight of the distinctivew white earpieces" (or some other such shite i can't be bothered to type accurately) then surely there cound be instances where iPods have also started relationships...

"their eyes met across a crowded tube carriage and he just couldn't take his eyes off her gleaming white earbuds. They exchanged a shy smile and both disembarked at Cockfosters for a spot of how's-yer-father."

i mean it must have happened to someone and theres' much more potential for naked ladies and all-round titillation in those stories - where's the fun in ruined relationships? editor got it so wrong on that call...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This was printed today? It bears a striking similarity to a Mahon Ipod puff piece printed about 6 weeks ago.

I dunno why apple are getting the sun to plug products you can't even get hold of. My Ipod backorder - 2 months and counting.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

iPods brought my girlfriend & I together!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 10 July 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy I'm dating has an iPod too, so no problem!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 10 July 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Sean! Romance AND computer compatibility!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got one 6 days ago and the relationship is still going strong, thanks. Give us another week and then ask me.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's why Mohan isn't a music critic as such.

I mean, what would you think if he hadn't mentioned any of his actual list and had instead written "Fennesz, Momus, !!!, Orange Juice, Cex, Plush, Captain Beefheart, World of Twist and, ahem, TaTu"?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

is that list really very much better?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Sean! Romance AND computer compatibility!

Ha, but Ned, the new iPod works on either Mac or Windows right out of the box! So you could both be staring longingly into each other's lucite-covered LCD screens, pass the taste check and yet still arrive home to an idealogical disaster!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Also looking at Charlie's list, I've decided that I want to hear a Momusz CD.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Cruel fate, Sean.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Bastards :(

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 10 July 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm already addicted to iTunes and my 24-hour "cream of the crop" playlist, including all the album cover art. When I finally break down and get an iPod, I'm going to be in serious trouble.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 10 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I should add that those iTrips--the adaptor that lets you use these things in your car by playing over a radio station--look very tasty. Very tasty, indeed...

they absolutely suck. not worth the plastic they are made with. the transmition power is ridiculously low. forget using them in a city. the best reception i have had with the thing is on an open highway in the backwoods of Virginia.

The Ipod has hurt my relationship with music. i'm going back to tapes thank you.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 10 July 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh, "Will Young in the box."

Do all of them suck? The iTrip is newer and has a zillion channels it works w/o batteries...

i have the ITrip. its a 40 buck piece o shit.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a car stereo with an input jack and I would say that the iPod has helped my relationship. I let my wife pick the first track to kick off the random all songs mix on road trips.

Amazing Rockethead, Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, suck. A friend of mine is getting me one for my birthday -- at least I won't be out $40...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the iTrip is nice-looking but doesn't work any better than the shitty iRock I got it to replace. I'm going back to using a cassette adapter.

Has the iPod ruined my relationship? My relationship with what? My discman does seem a little peevish and gaunt, now that you mention it. Is that what you meant?

Although the white headphones are pretty lousy. It's crazy, to me, the number of people who I see walking around with them- I used mine once, confirmed they weren't so good, and went back to my sony earbuds. My boy is getting an ipod soon, but he's a few thousand miles way, so ipod obsessions are probably the least likely thing to do us in.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 11 July 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't say that the itrip is a piece of shit, but it's no godsend either. i am now of the opinion that an fm transmitter in the big city is simply a lost cause. i'm in the market for a new car and will try for a stereo with a line input. another problem with the itrip is that you can't play the whole pod on random anymore. so i made a playlist with everything except the tuning clips. but to tell the truth i've pretty much abandoned the itrip

i enjoy the ipod but one thing i'd like to straighten out is the volume levels between songs. hopefully when itunes gets on windows (or i get on mac)

The mesmerizing Audi-Oh is the very first vibrator that vibrates to the throbbing beat of music, sexy talk, or any external sounds. It's a pearl-shaped clitoral vibrator with a soft silicone butterfly and has a thin elastic harness that allows you to strap it in place. The Audi-Oh will then vibrate to music coming from your stereo or directly from your iPod, other MP3 player or portable music device while you listen through your headphones. You can even wear the Audi-Oh discreetly under your clothes while you "dance with yourself" at your favorite dance music club. It will even pulsate to the sounds of your partner talking dirty to you. The Audi-Oh can also be used as a variable-speed vibrator without any music input.

What is BLACK music? What is WHITE music?

The kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter is pretty good. The wireless type are worthless, hard to use, and screw up your library to boot.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

where the fuck are all the anti ipod articles in the press? for fucks sake, is there no one who doesnt like these things?
