― Nhex, Monday, 19 April 2010 04:50 (fifteen years ago)
Black Sands is really nice, just getting into it.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Friday, 17 September 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)
It really is good! No one else feeling it?
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Sunday, 19 September 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)
hard to think of other albums i've liked as much this year
― Nhex, Sunday, 19 September 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)
it has a singer which makes me think it's going to be as awful and morcheebaish as the last one
― bike chain dust? (lukas), Sunday, 19 September 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)
Nah, it's way subtler and more textured than Morcheeba.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Sunday, 19 September 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)
Bit miffed Black Sands never got more recognition on this board. I still play it all the time.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 01:15 (twelve years ago)
it got in the top 100 last year? i think Bonobo may have gone under the radar cos of their association with the early-2000s chill out scene, at least that's why i didn't get round to checking it at the time.
― make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 14:29 (twelve years ago)
His new one, Northern Borders, had a sneak release today.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 22 March 2013 00:57 (twelve years ago)
Sorry, it's called The North Borders

Anyone else been playing it? It doesn't have the cinematic grandeur of Black Sands, and neither does it break any new ground. His style might be suffering from diminishing returns slightly. But there's some lovely stuff here (Emkay, Jets, Know You, Pieces) and it's as beautifully produced as usual.

Playing live within the next couple of weeks in N.America. Any reports/reviews? Anyone know the live set-up for this tour (ie number of musicians, instrumentation, etc.)?
― peepee, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)
Bumping thread to see if I can get info to convince me to trek over to see him/them live tomorrow.
― peepee, Thursday, 18 April 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)
so he's super popular now, huh? sold out here on a sunday, no mean feat. looks like live drums, vocals, bass, mallets, keys, and horns. i don't know though, seems kinda corny, like sub-cinematic orchestra jazzy hip-hop circa '02. turns out the production is the most interesting part.
― shit tie (Jordan), Thursday, 18 April 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)
not that i ever saw cinematic orchestra live, but it turns out they were fucking awesome:

i once saw cinematic orch live .. absolutely brilliant.despite hating jazz styled grooves, my wife loved it.was a very special evening.and for support : bonobo.albeit as a dj set only, but still very laid back and cool.
― mark e, Thursday, 18 April 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)
Seems like his DJ sets are very different from his live perfs. he is playing here in sf tomorrow and gonna check it out.
this boiler room mix is special.

his live show is great
― Nhex, Saturday, 26 October 2013 01:49 (eleven years ago)
New tune "Kerela" sounds pretty but fairly unispired on first listen. Worried he more or less ran out of ideas after Black Sands.
― chap, Thursday, 3 November 2016 17:30 (eight years ago)
Open to being proven wrong come January though!
― chap, Thursday, 3 November 2016 17:32 (eight years ago)
New album's nice if unremarkable - He's great live. Really don't recommend anyone watch the video for Kerala as it's literally headache-inducing.
― Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 01:18 (eight years ago)
It's nice as background music but nothing really stands out.
― dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 01:38 (eight years ago)
A few pretty tunes, but some of it's going a bit EDMish. Seems more and more likely that Black Sands was his peak.
― chap, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 08:50 (eight years ago)
#5 in the Albums chart.
That seems surprisingly high to me
― groovypanda, Sunday, 22 January 2017 20:42 (eight years ago)
Never underestimate the power of middlebrow electonica
― ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 22 January 2017 22:40 (eight years ago)
^ Was reminded of this by hearing Jamie XX "In Colour" in Starbucks today.
― Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Sunday, 22 January 2017 22:54 (eight years ago)
Have Ninja Tune been pushing this album?
His only other album to chart before was the previous one at #29.
Black Sands and all preceding it never even dented the top 100
― groovypanda, Monday, 23 January 2017 08:56 (eight years ago)
I've seen a fair bit of promotion on social media. Plus I feel like his word of mouth popularity has grown a lot in the last couple of years. Seems like everyone you meet likes Bonobo these days.
― chap, Monday, 23 January 2017 10:28 (eight years ago)
6 music/laverne playing tracks off the album, session for laverne this friday ...
― mark e, Monday, 23 January 2017 11:39 (eight years ago)
I was surprised. I'd have put it down to a low sales week but then The Flaming Lips are down at about 37 when you'd have thought fanbase plus low sales would uave seen them much higher. This is the first Bonobo album I've checked out, pleasant enough.
― michaellambert, Monday, 23 January 2017 11:59 (eight years ago)
If you enjoy it you should go back to Black Sands and Days to Come, both much better than this imo.
― chap, Monday, 23 January 2017 12:14 (eight years ago)
possible answers as to how he now hits the proper charts

Bonobo's sound engineer heard Anna Lapwood (Royal Albert Hall's resident organist) practice after one of their shows & shouted "toccata in B minor!" - the next day, she played in the finale of his show:
