If you haven't been there, visit KVR VST. You can pick up loads of free virtual instruments; the forums are great etc. etc. I've just downloaded the free Sampletank...the free instruments you 'fill it' with are absolutely amazing, esp. bass & guitars;; it really has created a stir.

I've gone with Cubasis (bluddy cheap, basically) and, as per the thread below, am achieving my best results in years...
