Souvenir live album technology that burns CDs at the show for you to buy on your way out. Pioneered by the Dark Lords at Clear Channel.

Fuck.. I've been doing that for years for free.

In other words, it's cool if the artist makes all of the profit from it. If all of the money goes to Clear Channel, then it's bullshit.

The quality can't be good enough to really charge anything for it.

But I don't think they'll be doing that at any of the shows I see anyway, so fuck Peter Gabriel.

I wish that option had been available when Michael Gira debuted his Angels of Light material for the first album at Tonic a couple years back. When I got the "Jarboe Live Benefit CD" he released of these 2 shows, the quality just sucked so much horse balls I couldn't believe it. Then, the official AOL NM cd came out and it also sucked compared to the live show. I was let down AGAIN!

This is a good idea, just as long as it's done for small venues, too. Clamoring to get a CD after a big stadium show would suck.

According to the article in Pitchfork, it sounds like they're not just using this for overpriced Peter Gabriel shows and the like. Around Boston, they've apparently been doing it at indie-type shows. Given that it's Clear Channel, it's sort of interesting: Evil begetting Indie...

So as cool as this technology sounds, music fans will ask: what are they planning to do with it?
I encourage everyone to avoid it like the plague...let it fail, costing Clearchannel as much money as possible, and as soon as they sell off that division (hopefully at a crushing loss), patronize the hell out of it. Just to kick Clearchannel in their shrivelled collective nutsack.

Custos. ... Always thinking.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to clarify that last bit. patronize the hell out of whatever company BUYS OFF the sold off division. Thusly, you get the benefit of the product...help a (theoretically) small business and kick Clearchannel in their shrivelled collective nutsack.

What about the non-major label artists they've been recording today who, I might add, make 50 percent royalties off it? What about their nutsacks?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll still get 50% royalties when you patronize the service AFTER Clearchannel gives up on it.
Until then, Buy all the non-major artists records and Donate whetever money you have left to them. Like, put it in "The Hat."

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos, I think the idea is that 95% of the sales happen right after the show.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 10 July 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand that, but that's not what I'm getting at.
*sigh*
I'm not saying that its a bad idea in general, I'm saying it's a bad idea to let Clearchannel profit from it.
Here's how it aught to work:
Instant Live run by Clearchannel...deliberately abstain from purchasing the live cds. Encourage your friends to do the same.
Instant Live run by anybody else...buy two copies and thank the artist; Encourage your friends to do the same.

I like the idea of this being another income stream for the artist; I don't like the idea of the already dangerously powerful Clearchannel getting a red cent from it.
