as in:
i like the Band but the self-titled brown album is the LSB.

will it catch on?? WILL I MAKE ILx HISTORY BY SUGGESTING THIS?
(or does it already exist and i am a clueless fool?)

Calling attention to the fact that you are inventing it = it will not catch on. See Momus's "screengazer" as evidence.

Don't such a SAS.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

in my high school LTB stood for 'lick the beaver,' so I had high hopes for this new one. SO CRUELLY DASHED!

Neudonym, Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it a lot, but NA's right - when anybody says "I've invented a new acronym/catchphrase/genre," it tends to die quickly. See Robert Hilburn's "Nu Country" and "the New Optimism," the latter of which referred to, wait for it, Big Country and U2.

Yes, I would like to invent a name for this activity: the "Simon Reynolds".

I also like your term, though, and I promise I'm not a complete dick.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i assumed it meant "list some bands"

True. Nobody ever used "Pseudoesque" even though it has been there for the picking since, oh, late 1999.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 July 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That said, I'm going to use the phrase "Lesbians Serving Butter" at every possible opportunity.

Cuz, contrary to popular belief, we have more curlers than old blusmen in Saskatchewan. Really. I've got the census data to back it up.
There's a box you can check.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahahahahaha.
Well, maybe there's a few that migrated up from the Delta back in the 30s, and got lost on the way to Chicago. They just kept going north. Now they have a Blues Nonet made up of Inuits and they play for all the Penguin bar-mitzvahs.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and, yes, Penguins do have bar-mitzvahs. They're already dressed for it (except for the tiny tiny tiny yarmulke).

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

if LSB is no good there should definitely be some sort of acronym that means this. it's just too useful.

The best way to invent an acronym is just to start using it all the time, and hope people ask what it means.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have invented a new acronym as well. It is to replace "OMG" by the end of the year: "FMS," short for "Fuck Me Sideways!".

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

from the Jargon File:

fuck me harder: excl.

Sometimes uttered in response to egregious misbehavior, esp. in software, and esp. of misbehaviors which seem unfairly persistent (as though designed in by the imp of the perverse). Often theatrically elaborated: “Aiighhh! Fuck me with a piledriver and 16 feet of curare-tipped wrought-iron fence and no lubricants!” The phrase is sometimes heard abbreviated FMH in polite company.

[This entry is an extreme example of the hackish habit of coining elaborate and evocative terms for lossage. Here we see a quite self-conscious parody of mainstream expletives that has become a running gag in part of the hacker culture; it illustrates the hackish tendency to turn any situation, even one of extreme frustration, into an intellectual game (the point being, in this case, to creatively produce a long-winded description of the most anatomically absurd mental image possible — the short forms implicitly allude to all the ridiculous long forms ever spoken). Scatological language is actually relatively uncommon among hackers, and there was some controversy over whether this entry ought to be included at all. As it reflects a live usage recognizably peculiar to the hacker culture, we feel it is in the hackish spirit of truthfulness and opposition to all forms of censorship to record it here. —ESR & GLS]
