TOUGH! TOUGH! TOUGH! ummm....

oh fine, "Go Your Own Way"

Andrew Thames OTM to the 10th power. Rumors is v. good, Tusk is damn near unbeatable (except, ironically, for the title track).

Ha Ha! But they fucked with it and made it better!
'Silver Springs' is majestic.
So that and 'Storms' for me.

de, Monday, 3 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Did no-one pick 'Dreams' up there?
Huh.

"Count on Me" by Jefferson Starship

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 June 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

oh and "The Chain" is one of the best openers ever

OTM-- so sweet, and then that crystalline cymbal hit...gah, makes me woozy thinking bout it.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 1 June 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

"that's enough for me"--it really is enough for me. almost.

naturemorte (naturemorte), Thursday, 1 June 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

the production on "Count On Me" is so freakin beautiful -- love that song.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 June 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

"Brown Eyes"

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 1 June 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

I think I'm gonna second The Green Manalishi. Their version of Need Your Love So Bad is probably my favourite, but I'm assuming it's a cover and therefore doesn't count?

shorty (shorty), Thursday, 1 June 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Silver Springs (the "The Dance" version)

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 1 June 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

"That's All For Everyone" seconded.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 1 June 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Dreams"

douglas eklund (skolle), Thursday, 1 June 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'll go with "Sara", but "Dreams" keeps going up in my estimation. So sparse and full of dread.

LC (Damian), Thursday, 1 June 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, "Need Your Love So Bad" is a cover -- Little Willie John. Check out the live version on 'Shrine '69' -- perhaps Green's greatest solo!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

Did Green also do the vocals on that, or was it Spencer?

shorty (shorty), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

so true LC it's pure magick!

douglas eklund (skolle), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, I'm the only one who picks "Dust"? Weird.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

What makes you think you're the one?

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, probably just misguided thoughts on a grey day.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

shorty -- oh that's totally Green.

Spencer only ever imitates Elmore James or Buddy Holly or Gene Vincent.

'You Make Loving Fun'

derrick (derrick), Friday, 2 June 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Stormy; I assumed it was Green. What a great voice. It gets my wife steamin' under the silks!

"You Make Loving Fun"

Christine McVie >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Peter Green

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

CONTROVERSIAL

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:18 (nineteen years ago)

I love both of their voices, but I'm definitely a Green-era fan. And as the Wikipedia article claims, once Green left "the band was stylistically barely recognizable as the same unit that made Then Play On.", and that's even before Christine McVie joined.

shorty (shorty), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

I actually think when you listen to 'Kiln House' ... it's not THAT dramatic of a drop-off ... yeah, there is something majorly missing .. but they were nicely transitioning into the softer sound. Led mostly by Christine, sure, but also Danny's stuff (who had been mostly blues-oriented) was real nicely maturing .. god he was a GREAT songwriter when he was on. and of course Jeremy was still in the fold!

although his "Honey Hush" did kinda paled in comparison to Foghat's...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'll definitely defer to your greater knowledge of Fleetwood Mac Stormy. I've just recently gotten into the band because someone here recommended Peter Green. It's not that I've ever disliked the 70s lineup, I just didn't absolutely love the band as I do the original line up.

shorty (shorty), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

oh no, i mean, I am a massive MASSIVE peter green freak .. I am actually reading his bio right now! about halfway through. So yeah, I have been pulling out a lot of these records lately. If you dig him, definitely don't miss that John Mayall 'A Hard Road' record - he sounds great even there. he is seriously one of my favorite blues guitar players of all time. Which is funny because some lurker douche accused me of being all about 'authenticity' on the Sunn/Boris thread. it's sad reading about how Danny Kirwan basically went destitute out of white guilt, but there you go. it was a funny scene. but yeah Otis Rush, Magic Sam, BB Albert & Freddy, Robert Nighthawk .. those guys are the heros. PG just slightly below em though. He was a fuckin master -- better than any white american I can think of and yes that does include Bloomfield.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:57 (nineteen years ago)

but shit yeah I'm a Christine fan -- "Hold Me" is my favorite song of all time

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

I've been alternating between Green and Bloomfield quite a bit lately, but I do think I've been playing the former more than the latter. That may be my preference for Green's vocals as much as anything though. I absolutely love both of their guitar playing.

Sorry I derailed the thread!

shorty (shorty), Friday, 2 June 2006 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

"Walk a Thin Line"

Tim Golden (Tim Golden), Friday, 2 June 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a little surprised that no one's picked "Gypsy" - quite possibly the most Stevie song evah, plus a gorgeously-picked Lindsey solo as the record runs out. The first 45 I ever owned, and to this day my favorite Mac song.

Also: McVie fan Alfred Soto to thread!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Also: McVie fan Alfred Soto to thread!

I mentioned "Brown Eyes," dear. If I was feeling sinister I might pick "Never Make Me Cry" too, since it and "Brown Eyes" are really two parts of one sad song.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

DREAMS

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

I mentioned "Brown Eyes," dear.

Perhaps I should read more closely...

On another note: has anyone heard anything about the possibility of their '80s albums (Mirage, Tango in the Night) getting the same remastering treatment their '70s classics have? This is necessary!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Too many contenders but tend to favor songs featuring Christine McVie. Love her voice.

Carlos Keith (Buck_Wilde), Friday, 2 June 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sticking to the version of "Landslide" on The Dance, or "Rhiannon" for the harmony vocals in the second chorus.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Friday, 2 June 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

I play "You Make Loving Fun" a lot while singing and dancing with Ophelia (my five month old baby). She loves it.

McVie > Nicks.

Not that I don't love Stevie!

'go your own way'

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Saturday, 3 June 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

This threas has inspired me to listen to Tusk this afternoon. Wow, what an amazing record. The conventional wisdom on this album seems to be that it's half brilliant and half amiss. There couldn't be a bigger slight toward Christine McVie. Her songs on the record are stunningly beautiful ... and help set up the contrast with Buckingham's basement tapes. I also must say I'm a big fan of "Beautiful Child," which (almost) even gets Steveie Nicks off the hook.

Anyway, for a POO: What Makes You Think You're the One.

Also, another question ponder: "The Ledge" and Prince's "Sister" separated at birth?

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Saturday, 3 June 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

I play "You Make Loving Fun" a lot while singing and dancing with Ophelia (my five month old baby). She loves it.

Have you considered playing The Band's "Ophelia" while dancing with Ophelia? Speaking of perfect songs ...

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Saturday, 3 June 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

There couldn't be a bigger slight toward Christine McVie. Her songs on the record are stunningly beautiful ... and help set up the contrast with Buckingham's basement tapes

What a stroke of genius to begin the record with one of her ballads.

Listen to "Brown Eyes" and "Never Make Me Cry" without crying.

a lot of it's to do with Kirwan's delivery of And through the lips corruption thrust to still the labour of my breath. It soounds so good.

Uh, I see that nearly seven years ago I picked "Walk A Thin Line", and I still love it to bits, but certainly "Second Hand News" and "Tusk" are goddam tuff contenders.
