"It's All Gone Pete Tong is the follow-up to cult dance music movie Human Traffic. The title, English club-speak for 'it's all gone wrong', features cameo roles from leading dance music figures from the last decade. The film is based around a superstar DJ who goes deaf just as his career is in full flow. Filming starts in Ibiza in late July.

I'm especially enamoured by the line, "The title, English club-speak for 'it's all gone wrong'...". God save us all.

Watch out for the film poster in a sixth form commons room near you.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 July 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

shame, cos the original Human Traffic was a great film (the coke snorting scene was magical)- I was nearly an extra in it.... £30 and free drink all day.... but it was a Sunday afternoon and we were all too wrecked to contemplate a film role by that point.

Also, the original showed what a great city Cardiff is - and that can't be bad.

russ t, Friday, 11 July 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw 'Club La Monde' the other week - now that's how to do it, haha (its so bad its good....except...no, its even worse - but Mr C is in it playing 'Pacific State' and can they get a rewind? yes)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

'Human Traffic' was the only film I've ever seen in my life that made me glad to be 'old'

dave q, Friday, 11 July 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

cinema is such a great medium ain't it?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic was awful.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

no. it wasn't. it was f*cking brilliant.

piscesboy, Friday, 11 July 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

this isn't a proper argument

gaz (gaz), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic divides audiences like no other film.

I think the people who truly, honestly hate it (and don't say it cos they think they should) are people who have probably never experienced clubbing life and those long weekends of drink, drugs, clubs and parties.

The coke scene, the pills scene and the end-of-the-chillout scene where everyone's alone and disjointed were all frighteningly accurate, like the film or not, no other mainstream film has captured the essence of clublife like Human Traffic, whether that life is your scene or not.

I recognised at least 3 characters from people I, too, have encountered during similar weekends.

russ t, Friday, 11 July 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

totally wrong, the fiercest critics of the film are the ones who DO experience clubbing regularly and feel the film was too cliched, hammy and trite. i enjoyed it a lot tho - its fun to laugh at Carl Cox.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ok not totally wrong, in my view. most people who slag it only seem to have real problems with certain bits esp. the 'national anthem' part which IS terrible but then its supposed to be , maybe

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yep that bit is awful. worse, in the *remixed*
(= cobblers) edition that scene is one that *hasn't*
been taken out. instead it sort of stops half way through.

piscesboy, Friday, 11 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and women. the women characters in it are very badly drawn.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

DV - yougo out in Cardiff on a Saturday night - those girls on Human Traffic are tame and undersexed in comparison.

I agree, Stevem, about the National Anthem scene (haven't seen the alternative version, though, I don't think).... and some of it IS hammy.... even cliched - but there's heaps of really great clever bits in there.... the 'spliff politics' scene was so spot on it hurt.... and the aforementioned apres chillout scene, where all the people who'd been the greatest of mates, told each other their life stories through the night, were now zombie-like wired strangers was superb.

The acting (Danny wotsisname and John Sims) was pretty good.... the girls did let the side down on this one, though.

But on the whole, a really enjoyable film, I thought.... flawed, but obviously made by someone who had actually been there, seen it and done it - unlike tosh like 'Go', 'Trainspotting' and 'Club le Monde'.

russ t, Friday, 11 July 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

there are other aspects to Go that make it enjoyable tho, the 'clubbing/rave' aspect feels more like an aside - general attachment, and US 'rave generation' films have a different perspective compared to UK ones. i liked it a lot as a teen comedy romp (would take stuff like 'Go' over stuff like 'American Pie' easily).

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I hated it. my friend tells me I should watch it again.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Go or Human Traffic?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Go" was fantastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, let's put the ya-yas in now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought human traffic was k-rub. The dialogue was excruciating.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

so many good bits tho:

the malfunctioning fast food staff
buggered by the boss
any jungle in ga?
bad sperm from every pore
spliff politics
carl cox (so bad it good)
moff getting caught wanking
etc.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic was a horrible film with some extremely clever and perceptive moments. I watched it in the cinema with my ex and a bottle of wine and immediately wanted to go clubbing afterwards, so I guess it had something of the desired effect on me; but the national anthem scene alone stands up as reason enough to slaughter the cast and chuck every copy of the film off the nearest cliff.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 July 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Spliff politics, very funny and memorable part of that film. I personally found the aging raver reminiscing bit very comical. You have to know the stereotypes I suppose.

It's important to realise that it's really not so much a follow-up to Human Traffic as a follow-up to FUBAR. It's written and directed by Michael Dowse, who actually had no experience whatsoever of club culture before this film, and features the actors who played Terry and Deaner in minor roles. I saw it at the Canadian premiere a while ago, and was pretty blown away. Most remarkable was the fact that it was shot entirely on HD and looked spectacular. Plus, Coke Badger.

Oblivious Lad (Matthew Lazowski), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

which part in pete tong was played by the Terry character? i just recognized Deaner as the austrian drummer...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

The other Austrian, actually. I only recognised one of them at first, too.

Oblivious Lad (Matthew Lazowski), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

human traffic is so fucking terrible. is this actually any good?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen Human Traffic, so I can't comment on that. I'd wager the only real similarity is the setting, so I think it's a misleading comparison. But yes, this is actually very good.

Oblivious Lad (Matthew Lazowski), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

the comparison is completely misleading. the only similarity (other than setting) is that it's the same producer. totally different director and writer. gotta say that Pete Tong was actually a great film, the more i think it over.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. Well I'll greet Tong with sceptical intriguedness then, rather than just a curt "piss off".

What's FUBAR? That passed me by completely.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

yeh I'll be amazed if this film doesn't make most British people on ILM howl with pain to be honest.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

FUBAR is a mockumentary about (head)bangers, and a fucking classic one at that. It follows the exploits of Terry and Deaner, two Pilsner-shotgunning, work-slacking, metal-loving losers. It's hilarious. However, It's All Gone Pete Tong is several orders of magnitude better, and I say that despite the fact that the subject matter of FUBAR is far dearer to my heart.

As to howls of pain coming from the British ILM contingent, I don't know, but I'm curious to find out. Personally, I don't think you have to have had any experience of club culture whatsoever to appreciate the real themes of the film, which transcend the setting.

anyone know if i could get the song that frankie is playing for the austrians in the studio. it's the scene where they find out he's deaf and he blows out his ear drum. they think it's shit. it's all white noise and minimal weirdness. basic live bass drum and snare, weird filtered broken sounding guitar, assorted strange noises. that song was awesome!

SPOILERS!

Saw this today, was positively surprised. I expected it to be just another spoof documentary, but it was more serious than I thought, and all the better for that. It really doesn't have that much to do with clubbing, so the comparison to Human Traffic is pointless. I loved how the movie went beyond Frankie Wilde's magnifiicent return (the record company guy saying how handicap is cool now was brilliant), and the guy who played his manager was hysterical. And the badger was genuinely creepy, though the moment he
