Fuck "Gay Bar," man. My drag name was gonna be "Gloria Gaybar." My life is ruined.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

e6 sucks so much live that i have a hard time listening to the record any more...

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

high voltage for the 'free' jazz sax solo at the end. but both are good.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer "D!HV!" because it sounds like Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone". Speaking of the latter, what is the guy saying in the monologue at the beginning? Is it in Dutch? Also, the vocal delivery of "and he sezzzz..." after "knows damn well he'z been chee-teh-hed" is classic!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The first track on that is by Gino Vanelli, this is too much

dave q, Friday, 11 July 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Both songs are sub-Tenacious D at best, but Danger! wins clearly because you can pretend it's decent music if you don't listen too hard...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a Tenacious D disco song I'm unaware of?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I refer to the humour element rather than the musical style...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tenacious D are funny?

(It's "Danger! High Voltage!" but no one is taking into effect the influence of "Dance Commander")

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gay Bar" is so fucking brilliant I practically can't stand it!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Jay K, I've not been able to listen to "Gay Bar" since I saw them live. Oh well. "DHV" is still great though, that can stay.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this will provoke ire perhaps, but for me, personally, imho, just my own personal gut feeling here, if I was choosing, in terms of where my tastes lie I gotta go with White Zombie over Electric Six for disco hard rock and it ain't even close.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

the original single mix of "d!hv!" wins...(which is why i'm kinda mad that my inclusion on my top 10 last year was edited from "the wildbunch" to "electric six"...two different bands man!...and if you don't believe me just listen to the space and contrast in the single compared to that 33-on-45-rpm airless album re-recording)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I don't really like the album version at all, I was kind of annoyed with all the weird "space" sounds going on in the background of it. Why change something that is pretty much perfect to begin with?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course monster magnet over electric six, but that goes without saying

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Both of them are just okay at best!!!!!

David Allen, Friday, 11 July 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Tenacious D are funny?

Exactly...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the show was very funny

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that David felt that he should put like 8 exclamation points on that statement, that's basically the way I say everything and it makes me have great love for him despite being totally wrong.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

blount waaaaaaaaaaaaay OTM w/ monster magnet

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Monster Magnet.....but they've never made me laugh like I laugh at the "Gay Bar" video (although the video for "Space Lord" is pretty dang cool inna vintage Puff Daddy/Mase stylee).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

transl.: "Neither!!!!!!"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Danger! High Voltage!" is miiiles better. "gay bar" was v.disappointing.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

grebt heetar riff killian. c'mon man feel it!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ha geetar i meant, it is late.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gay Bar" is the best single of the year. ergo, that.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's grown on me a teensy bit, but with "danger!" there was no effort required. it's an ok geetar/heetar riff.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gay Bar" is the best single of the year.

We'll have to fight to the death on this one. Useless song.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You say that about every song.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Not true. There's that one song. And that other one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

that one song - "soon" , that other - "only shallow"

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"gay bar" is insanely overrated though, shakira's fake b-52's song was leagues better

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no it wasn't.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

shakira's fake b-52's song was leagues better

You are an enemy of truth.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh that's right - cuz three tunes crammed into one never trumps half a joke and one hook spread over three minutes.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

gimme "space lord" a million times before "gay bar", "rock lobster" infinity squared before it.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

gimme "space lord" a million times before "gay bar",

Who started in with the Monster Magnet comparisons anyway? I think they're way off. Monster Magnet are fucking magnificent, but they're hirsute, acid-dropping stoner freaks with a penchant for metal for chrissakes! Electric Six are completely different.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gay Bar" is clearly much better than "Danger! High Voltage!". Since (A) it's not long enough to get boring, and (B) it doesn't have that dreadful sax solo. However, if it were the really the single of the year, I think I'd have to off myself.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 July 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dreadful sax solo?!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Admittedly, I kinda-sorta-maybe like "Dance Commander"

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 11 July 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that one song - "soon" , that other - "only shallow"

What balderdash, where's "Pictures of You"?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 July 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - you are on record with your Stooges dislike; but have you ever heard the majesty of "Skunk (Sonicly Speaking)" by the MC5???!!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 12 July 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also on record as to my dislike for MC5 (well i got v angry when i heard 'kick out the jams' and told everybody on andrew l's thread, it's a bit embarrassing i guess, but since you mentioned them).

on which record is that on?

what's so dreadful abt that sax solo, some nice squeals there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 July 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've yet to see the Gay Bar video, but here's my fave songs on E6's Fire in best to least best order (doing this reaffirmed that well over half the album is stone dead classic, including the two songs mentioned in the thread title):

Synthesizer
Danger! High Voltage!
I'm The Bomb
She's White
Electric Demons In Love
Naked Pictures Of Your Mother
Dance Commander
Gay Bar
I Invented The Night
Improper Dancing
Nuclear War (On The Dance Floor)
Getting Into The Jam
Vengeance And Fashion

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 July 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The ending sax solo is alright, I guess. At least it shows some signs of originality. I think that's the one you were referring to above Julio. But the first sax solo sounds like by-the-numbers, Huey Lewis-grade cheese to my ears.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 12 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the end solo. that's damn fine.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 July 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)
