My name is Dave ["Hi Dave"] .. and I'm a music snob.

This morning it occurred to me that "Margaritaville" is really a pretty good song. I don't mean that in any "guilty pleasure" way - because I get no pleasure out of it.. But if I were hearing it for the first time today, I might think it a pretty clever number.

So 'fess up. This is about purging. Time to acknowledge the validity of something you refuse to like.

(If it makes it easier on you, you can say, "I don't like ____, but I can see why someone would.")

actually i like them.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, you're forgiven for everything, EVERYTHING, you developed a liking for in your teenage years. even if it's bon jovi. or simple minds. or simply fucking red.

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

teletubbies?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Simple Minds where the shit. Well, once upon a time anyway.

I like Brittany Spears's cover of "And the Beat Goes On." I first heard it used in an HBO promo, thought it sounded kinda cool and was determined to seek out the performer. When I found out, I was shocked and embarrassed. But I still dig it; ten years ago, I would've refused to admit that.
Still, it's not the singing that I like, but the arrangement. Really.

i don't like Peaches, but i can see the talent there and understand how other people can get into it.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, I have to do this all the time as a muso-journo for a daily paper. it's called something like objectivity. or fluffery.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But today, you aren't getting paid for it.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well, but it's the same principle. you step outside of yr own preferences, and weigh something solely on its own merits and context or whatever.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like the rolling stones, led zeppelin, CCR, John Hiatt, paul simon, or art garfunkel, but i could see why somebody would

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess Manson was a decent enough bloke.

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Saturday, 12 July 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 12 July 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see how someone wouldn't like the Teletubbies.

I saw the Fast Food Rockers track for the first time this morning. I'm still wrestling with the experience, I need more time to, uh, process and digest.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 12 July 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Simple Minds were the shit. Well, once upon a time anyway.

are you sure you don't want to rephrase that?
