because "Rape Jam" was already a trademarked copyright of Smucker Foods, Inc., so they just went with an anagram.

I always thought Pearl Jam should cover "Lady Marmalade," myself.

From a 6/03 concert review:

"Towards the end of the show, during “Crazy Mary” and at the end of his first (onstage) bottle of wine, Vedder said he was going to tell the crowd the real origin of the name Pearl Jam. “We made up a story that sounded cool before, but now I’m going to tell you what really happened”

He went on to say that they just wanted to have the initials PJ. “We knew that if our initials were PJ that we would be well coached, and win lots of championships, because PJ as everyone knows, stands for Phil Jackson.” He then extended his arm and handed his bottle to an extremely tall, bearded fan wearing a hat in the third row. The Zen master coach accepted the gift and raised the bottle to his lips. After finishing it, he handed the bottle to a security guard, and raised his hand in appreciation to Vedder."
