I'm bored. Chances are, you're bored too. Solution: recommend me some songs.

Not to sound too demanding or anything. I've just run out of ideas as to where to look right now, and I'm too tired to phrase things all polite and such. Anyways. You all know what I like (disco, funk, rap, punk, electro, house, acid rock, whatever the hell it is that Clinic does). If you give me some ideas for stuff I should probably download immediately, that would be great. Thank you.

aaargh! "Computer GAME" is the name of the YMO cut (Millar to thread!)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 12 July 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I just put on "Computer Game" and it is unequivocally the GREATEST SOUND RECORDING in the history of music.

Also, Nate you should check out the original UK lp recording of "Speed King" by Deep Purple.

If you do those two things, it will open up new sonic vistas for you.

I'm rooting for you! I want you to have a breakthrough!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 12 July 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Discovery of the week via S******o:

The Avengers - "Car Crash"

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 12 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

what you really need by YMO is the 12 inch version of Tighten Up! Download that. and then download what i was playing tonight:the second side of John McLaughlin's Devotion. Specifically:Marbles,Siren,Don't Let The Dragon Eat Your Mother, and Purpose Of When. That stuff will kick yur ass. Then download any song off of Split by The Groundhogs. You will be on the floor begging for mercy!
If you already own all this stuff, well, then just ignore this post.

scott seward, Saturday, 12 July 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

rap = ll cool j f mobb deep, keith murray, fat joe, foxy brown - i shot ya (remix)

There is no reason this many artists should be involved in one track.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, thank god big bands are illegal now.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dont like ninety percent of songs have at least five people performing on them?!

Yes, but are they all elbowing each other for mic time? Nope.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

do you hate posse cuts?!!!?!

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Which brings about a greater pet peeve I have in regards to pop music: democracy = death.

(i.e. modern hip-hop and/or the disasterous fall of Belle & Sebastian)

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

By posse cuts, I assume you're referring to tracks that feature one or two featured mc's, and then a whole gaggle of "friends" whooping it up in the background?

Yeah, annoying as fuck.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Apologies for using "feature" twice within the span of five words. I need a proofreader.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 12 July 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I've actually heard about maybe 2% of these songs (and none of 'em until trife mentioned "Basket Case", which reminds me, I used to really like Green Day and maybe I should start again; their cover of the Kinks' "Tired of Waiting For You" = ker-lassic)

Also, for the benefit of mr. trife, "acid rock" = that segment of '60s hippie music that sounds all distorted and fucked up, i.e. "Purple Haze". I think Black Sabbath might have been considered acid rock before someone decided they were "heavy metal".

Also, ha ha, fooled you, this thread is actually about YOUR taste! (so far, so good, I think. The verdict is out on Alex in NYC though.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 12 July 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

we have fairly similar tastes so there you go, but its hard to tell what someone's already heard/got when they ask for recommendations - good luck finding half the tracks i mentioned on slsk tho, heh

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 12 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael B, Saturday, 12 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to suggest 'Noddy Holder' :) what is the original P-Funk tune it samples?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 12 July 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(dark ambient/industrial) AFter Cease To Exist - Throbbing Gristle
(house) Dem Young Sconies - Moodyman

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 13 July 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

If you already have these - listen again - they are nice.

disco = Max Tundra - Mastered by the Guy at the Exchange (it starts off rock but hey)

funk = Marva Whitney - Unwind Yourself (the home of THAT riff)

rap = 3rd Bass - Gas Face (always nice to go back to)

punk = http://lynskey.scumperson.eu.org/mp3/punksong.mp3 (this is something from Japan that nobody I know can ID. However, it is almost unbelievably good)

electro = http://lynskey.scumperson.eu.org/fah/spooky.mp3 (here, have an exclusive)

acid rock = Father Yod, I suppose.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 13 July 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Right click save as on those links. It crashed my browser clicking on them directly.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 13 July 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Gas Face is so good.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 13 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i will recommend one song to you Nate.

Get On by Moguai. You will absolutely love it, I fully guarantee.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Charlotte - The Anthemn

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

That Gloria Gaynor tune that Nate mentioned above is sweeet.

Michael B, Sunday, 13 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The verdict is out on Alex in NYC though.

Ah, but isn't it always?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

disco = Crown Heights Affair, "Every Beat of My Heart"
funk = Hank Ballard, "Butter Your Popcorn"
rap = Snoop Dogg, "Still a G Thang"
electro = Model 500, "Night Drive (Time, Space, Transmat)"
house = M People, "Excited"

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

disco - i've not downloaded any classic disco for ages but "Comfortably Numb" by The Scissor Sisters has Bee Gees voices so maybe that counts. It's funny and good.

funk - I have no funk, Nate, you know this. So reinterpreting the category as "good fuck songs" I'm saying you need "Tempted 2 Touch" by Rupee, a Caribbean lovers cry fit to rub cashmere with that Wayne Wonder single.

rap - Nas feat Pharrell - "Flyest Angels", when oh when will this indian sample madness end, not yet?, fine by me. Wheezy, cooling.

punk - oh come off it, but I did buy the Rough Trade Post-Punk CD set so I could look at that. Actually, no, time for the dinosaurs to strike back and wash the punk virus away, so download "Get Your Hands Off My Woman" by novelty-metal genii The Darkness.

electro - Ultravox's "The Thin Wall" went down a storm at the last FT club night, LIVE THE BUZZ with its super-tense drum sounds and Midge sounding doomy.

house - M Mayer's "Speaker" was a single last year I think but I only just heard it - very deep minimal acid blip house, compelling in a retro-87 fashion.

acid rock - I'm sharing a Les Rallizes Denudes live album on slsk but I'm not on it right now. Otherwise, tough luck.

whatever the hell it is that Clinic does - ooh time for the post punk album again! "Georges Five" by Les Georges Leningrad has a monstrous concrete groove which is then completely wrecked by the squalling art-banshee singing it but if you like that sort of thing it's great!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

''acid rock - I'm sharing a Les Rallizes Denudes live album on slsk but I'm not on it right now''

I hear ya. what's the date on that?

if you get hold of it let me know and i can sort you out with more.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

1977 - tracks are enter the mirror/night of assassins/flame of ice/a memory is far. I don't want any more though, Julio, it's a bleeding racket.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. fair enough.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Can we do this again? Apparantly Patrin and I have similar tastes, because I've absolutely loved most of what y'all have recommended him. So: more! more! more!

My single contribution is maybe "obvious" to those in the know, but I just heard it for the first time and it's one of those songs I've listened to 5-10 times a day since d/ling it:

Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia - "Blind Spot - Invisible Bend"

ben welsh (benwelsh), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeze - Southern Freeze
Was Not Was - Wheel Me Out
Snoop - Snoop Dogg
Snoop ft Ludacris - U Got What I Want
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
A.R.E. Weapons - Hey World
The Normal - TVOD
Futureshock - Pride's Paranoia (Nate you especially should hear this if you haven't already)
Tonetraeger - Welcome Back Kotter
Human League - The Lebanon
The rapture - I Need Your Love

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)
