mine ain't much of an opinion really, it's more like a... no, not even a "taste", rather a Proustian "recollection of a smell", sort of
(the ILMers prone to machine gunning dirty jokes can take their shots here, evidently, but what i actually mean is)
- when hearing the early Queen albs for the first time in the mid-70s -- Sheer Heart Attack, II, A Night At The Opera, Queen, probably in that order -- i did have that teenage fan's feeling of intense happiness and great gratitude for the music: like, i was unexpectedly given a big bowl of huge oranges, and given quite a bit of time to peel 'em at leisure -- only for the juicy fruits to be suddenly taken away again, later on. hotdamn! (sometime 'round Hot Space, i gathered).after that i've not bothered to have an opinion 'bout Queen one way or another, to tell the truth.and by now i certainly don't care any more where the fk exactly that fruit bowl vanished, d'oh.

how do you know that? you've heard other bands attempt this? with whom are you comparing queen with?
''Freddie Mercury had a voice that shall never be equaled...guitarist Brian May has one of the most distinct tones in all of rock music, and he was one of Zappa's favs so you know that he was top notch''
to a lot of ppl that would be a negative.

FWIW "Another One Bites the Dust" is one of the 5 funkiest songs ever recorded by a not-funk-band band and is 100% unfuckwithable. A Night At the Opera is one of the top 5 "classic rock" albums to listen to on headphones late at night when you're high. They're totally responsible for my late-teens 180 on big ridiculously bombastic rock. My opinion = shit yeah.

2. The other day, after not having shaved for a while, I shaved all my face except the mustache, and everyone told me I looked like Freddy Mercury. I don't have an overbite, though.
That is all.

Once again, kilian's apparently drunk off his ass, because Jazz features the majesty of "Mustapha" and "Let Me Entertain You," and any album featuring tracks of that caliber should never be called "dreadful."

as for "a day at the races", any album that closes with "teo torriate" (contender for best queen non-single?) deserves praise. (a night at the opera was the first album i ever bought actually, i'd say i'd still enjoy most of it quite a bit)
you know, i'm starting to think "innuendo" may be underrated. great title track, i'm going slightly mad, the show must go on, bijou (another neglected gem) - what's not to love?

if whitehouse got some of their moves from queen then there's a reason to like them but this is negated by the fact that alex in nyc likes them ;-)

Being 8 years old when Freddie died, I remember there being a lot of TV programmes on about Queen and Freddie Mercury at that time, so for a few years until into my teens I'd always associated Queen as being a stadium-playing, tracksuit-wearing pop band that happened to have a piano ballad with an opera section in it. That all changed when I was about 14/15, I'd discovered a tape in my uncle's car with just the word 'Queen' written on it, which turned out to be the "Sheer Heart Attack" album. I was struck my how much the first track rocked - the frentic drumming, the rock licks, the soloing, the way that the tracks segued together to create a 'whole' work - just the sheer ambition of it. It just seemed far removed from stuff like 'I Want To Break Free', and 'A Kind Of Magic' - it had a musicality and a purpose to it, not to mention a complexity and energy. By the time the intro to the first "In The Lap Of The Gods" (not the revisited part) came on, I was sold. Having said that, I did get into some of their later stuff eventually, even though I don't think they made a GREAT album after at least 'Jazz', they were still capable of some incredible individual moments.
