What My Bloody Valentine song should I download?

I'm not familiar with them, but I've heard they are okay. I like FEAR, Iggy Pop, Black Flag, Method Man, Herbie Hancock, Sonic Youth, AYWKUBT Trail of Dead, Supersuckers, Turbonegro, and "Pisces Iscariot" by Smashing Pumpkins. Wat would be the best introductory song for me to listen to? (as you can tell, my M.B.V. knowledge is limited at best and nonexistent at realistic)

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say "Only Shallow".
Listen to it as loudly as possible.

xnelio, Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

um, "soon" is the consensus pick i guess

but given what you listed above you may like "you made me realize" better

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll ditto "Only Shallow"

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"feed me with your kiss" really really really really loud. over and over. all night long.

scott seward, Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

sueisfine

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks guys, I'm on it. And if I don't like what I hear, then either I'm closed-minded or you're all stupid. Or, I like Steak-umms. Nevermind that last one, because it's a constant. I do like steakumms. Umm.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

So far, most are remote, but that "realize" song is pretty rockin'.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Honey Power"!

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"When You Sleep"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

helltime: the way to go is get fucked up and at the point where you're leaning back in the la-z-boy and the rooms spinning but you're also really relaxed, then play Loveless

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

you've got nothing

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 13 July 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Soft as Snow (but warm inside).

Great title.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 13 July 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously: "to here knows when"

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 13 July 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"sunny sundae smile"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd go for "cupid come" or "soon"

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 13 July 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Soon" is the best sound recording ever made. Ned's got my back on this one.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 13 July 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

''lick my pussy will montgomery''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 July 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Feed Me with Your Kiss"!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 July 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Off Your Face"

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 13 July 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"you're safe in your sleep (from julio's bad humour)"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was maybe a b-side

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 July 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

While we are on the topic:

Where can I get a copy of the instrumental track that is KS playing ostrich guitar over a breakbeat sapled from public enemy? I don't know what it is called, or what it is on, A friend of mine had in on a bootleg interview cassette years and years ago and I have not heard it since. I believe it was a limited edition promo.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 13 July 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Soon" is beautiful but kind of dated sounding, and it may not be the best representative of some of their more mouth-agape WHOOOOOSH qualities. I'd say "To Here Knows When" or better yet "(When You Wake) You're Still in a Dream."

Clarke B., Sunday, 13 July 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the blown a wish/what you want 1-2 punch

brains (cerybut), Sunday, 13 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

mike i think you're talking about "instrumental b" maybe?...which is the glide guitar stuff over the break that ended up being used in madonna's "justify my love"...real proto-triphop business there. i have it on a bootleg of the just pre- and post-isn't anything eps and i'm sure it's floating around out there on the mp3 file sharing services.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 13 July 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that insterumental was on as an extra track in the vinyl copy of 'isn't anything'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 July 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with clarke. i prefer 'to here knows when' but, you know, you just can't go wrong with practically anything from the creation years.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 July 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's got my back on this one.

Do I even need to add anything more at this point?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"When You Sleep" and "Soon," easy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sunny sundae smile seconded

kieron, Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah 'instrumental b' was on the 7" that came with the first 5000 copies of the Insn't Anything LP. it's also on the Pensioners on Ecstasy compilation (and thus exists on CD out there). 'instrumental a' is a reasonably inconsequential 'feed me with your kiss'-esque piece that i was less than excited about after hearing..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

you shouldn't download any MBV tracks you tightwad, you should buy their two albums "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless" (in that order).

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 13 July 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, Loomer.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe no-one's said Strawberry Wine...especially in this weather!

Jez (Jez), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I always had a big old soft spot for Drive it all over me.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Why no love for Come In Alone?

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Thorn!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The one with all the feedback.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And the gooey vocals.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the one where you can't tell what they're saying.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Their version of "Map Ref"

also, while you're at it, get Dykehouse's version of "Map Ref", too.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ps. I am also very fond of their cover of 'We Have All The Time In The World'

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

have any of you checked theyre site? i googled them and the sight looks real and its nice and it has mp3s but the songs sound either like an early version of mbv or a joke by the kooky brit lead guy. i really cant figure it out- it sounds like him singing but the music sounds like a shitty demo buy the #o'clock. a couple of the tunes are ok . if you do like mbv when you get some go out and get the coctau twins first or second recordthey may seem kinda opposite but together the two make for a lovey blissfull mixed tape

kelly denison-cole (dustjacket), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the song that hit home first with me was "i only said", so that's a good place to start. "sometimes" is their best song.

having said this, it's probably best to hear "Isn't Anything" stuff before "Loveless", in which case, i nominate "Lose My Breath".

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

'we have all the time...' must be their last evah
recording mustn't it ?

piscesboy, Monday, 14 July 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the cover of "Map Ref" came a couple of years after that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to gygax!
that song sends shivers down my spine

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Only Shallow" was the only song I really got into on my first listen-thru of Loveless.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 14 July 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Soon". Put it on repeat play forever.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Already done that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they should remix it without the keyboards and turn the bass up

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the info!

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I will add my humble vote for "Swallow." it's the shimmeriest, not to mention the most diaphonous, flutteriest, evanescent, et al.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Just read the news concerning the forthcoming box set. A complete LP intended for release between Isn't Anything and Loveless! They're finishing it off at the moment. Apparently, the Glider EP was intended to be a full LP's worth of material - they had to abandon it midway through recording. Anyone else know anything about this? Wonder what else will be in the box? My guess is material from the EP's plus things like the instrumental 7" and the versions of Map Ref and We Have All The Time In the World. Saw them at ULU around the time of Glider (Summer 1990) - hottest gig ever (see - UK weather at the moment).

Robert Moore (treble), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I still vote for "Come In Alone", since the guitar/flute/whatevers sound like some sort of heavenly choir...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ARGH! I lovelovelove "Cupid Come"!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

make it a double cd and add on all 12 tracks from the geek, new record and sunny sundae 12" singles

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax is right waaaaaaay up there - if you're going to only hear one MBV song, it should be "To Here Knows When."

"Only Shallow," "Soft As Snow," and "Soon" are my personal runners-up.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim, do an early years CD80!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

easy!

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the "instrumental b" break jess is talking about upthread is the wholesale of PE's "security of the first world".

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and Madonna's Lenny Kravitz penned "Justify My Love" is lifted from "instrumental b"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer, i'm 99% sure Kravitz lifted PE directly. i remember that the Fear of a Black Planet had several harsh verses directed at Kravitz/Madonna.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Normally I'd say 'Feed Me...', but if you like the Smashing Pumpkins try 'Love Machine' or something else off the Geek EP.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The Andrew Weatherall remix of "To Here Knows When".

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

such a thing does not exist

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, I mean the Andrew Weatherall remix of "Soon".

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the 17 minute live version of "you made me realise"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Here's my 2xCD80 GO! comp. The first is 'Isn't Anything' era tracks:

You Made Me Realise
Slow
Thorn
Cigarette in Your Bed
Drive It All Over Me
Feed Me With Your Kiss
I Believe
Emptiness Inside
I Need No Trust
Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside)
Lose My Breath
Cupid Come
(When You Wake) You're Still In A Dream
No More Sorry
All I Need
Sueisfine
Several Girls Galore
You Never Should
Nothing Much To Lose
I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)
Instrumental A
Instrumental B
Sugar

(77:09, chronological order)

and the second disc is 'Loveless' era:

Soon
Glider
Don't Ask Why
Off Your Face
To Here Knows When
Swallow
Honey Power
Moon Song
Only Shallow
Loomer
Touched
To Here Knows When
When You Sleep
I Only Said
Come In Alone
Sometimes
Blown A Wish
What You Want

(78:44, chronological again - I've included "To Here Knows When" twice since it's important to show where it comes in chronologically, but it also seems weird to cut it out of the flow of 'Loveless' (and it's also weird to cut it out of the 'Tremelo' flow as well). You could replace the second instance with the 'Map Ref' cover at the end, but that track sounds kind of out of place and isn't the best ending for this disc.)

I'm working on a third of early and misc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll agree "Map Ref" doesn't really sound like any other MBV shit but sometimes I think it might be my favorite thing they ever recorded. Those harmonies are so great. And its layered just right. I love the way everything sorta shimmers and shakes in rhythm. And when it goes into the "interrupting my train of thought.." part its just so beautiful and triumphant. Oh man..

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The production of "Several Girls Galore" is brilliant. It sounds really tense and paranoid how there's no bass except for that one little riff.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

There are a lot of MBV videos on Youtube, for what it's worth. Here's "Only Shallow":
