Say Something Intelligent About "Holiday Rap"

We celebrate seven weeks Miker "G" and Sven

We took a holiday with all our friends.
It was a time to relax and let your worries behind

Exactly seven weeks or something crossed my mind.
It was the shine of the time we never forget

One morning our parents kicked us out of our beds.
We told them it was stupid
don't play the fool

But the answer was short: you gotta go to school!

G
s running up and down and everybody know
Rappin'
rockin'
poppin' in the street-kid-show.
Miker "G" rocks the house and you know what I'm saying

Now when he's on the mike there is no delaying.
So you better run to see him in your neighbourhood

He's rappin'
rockin' all the way to Hollywood.
He
check it out
these are the words we say

You scream with us: we need a holiday!

We gonna ring-reng-a-dong for a holiday

Put your arms in the air and let me hear you say.
We gonna rincl-reng-a-dong for a holiday

Put your arms m the air and let me hear you say.
We gonna ring-reng-a-dong for a holiday

Miker "G" and Sven were here to stay.
We gonna ring-reng-a-dong for a holiday

He
check out the new style we just play.

We are going on a summerholiday
if you want to go
Yoh Sven

We're going to London and New York City

And we take a little piece of Amsterdam.
We are going on a summerholiday
if you want to go
Yoh Sven

We're going to London and New York City

And we take a little piece of Amsterdam.

I wanna holiday
I sream a lot

school is the only thing we got.
Sven's parents told me I better go

'Cause Sven's hangin' on the street in the street-kid show.
In the bar "Rox" what happened to you?
I told him it's my life and I know what T'm doin'.
I saw the school Ithought I'll never stay

Give me seven weeks again
I need my holiday!

Well
this is my partner with the number one jam

Famous in the boogie-box in Amsterdam.
He's the fastest rapper and his name is Miker "G"

His rap is stronger than the sucker M. C.'s.
Well
let me show you what my man can do

Rappin'
rockin'
poppin' and the boogaloo
too.
But anyway
no more delay

just listen to the beat-box he will play.

My name is M. C. Sven
I'm also deejay

I didn't like the schools
I too another way.
Yoh like the Miker "G" so I used my voice
And soon I bought a big Rolls Royce.
That's right
my name is Miker "G"

I uss the holiday with the M. I. C.
On the street was a party bigger than HoUywood

I grew up in this neighbourhood.

We gonna ring-reng-a-dong for a holiday
. . .
We are going on a summerholiday

if you want to go
Yoh Sven
. . .

Bite is the thing most rappers do

but I can write my own thing
too.
I can understand things most rappers say

'Cause rappin' is my thing and I do it every day.
I'm the number one rapper
Yoh
my name is Sven

I can rap more raps than a superman can.
So I'm the guy on your radio

also rockin' to the rhythm in stereo.

And you don't stop that bodyrock

and you won't stop that bodyrock.
You spell my name right
I'm Miker "G"

M-I-K-E-R and "G" you see.
Well
M
is for microphone and "G" is genius

Miker "G" in the house that's serious.
And you know that and you show that

it's time Sven
so let's go back!
We are going an a summerholiday -
we're going to London and New York City -
We are going an a summerholiday -
we're going to London and New York City!

What's the spread-bet for the first joke about Def Jux on this thread, anyway?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

look, this tune is amazing! it first came to my attention when i thought that the chorus ran "We're going to London and New York City

And we dig a little bit of S & M".

sadly, it turned out that wasnt the right lyric but it still a classic:

total highlights:
- the shit 'scratching' sounds that mc miker g (or dj sven) makes towarrds the end.
- that weird vocal sound that mimics the melody in the chorus.
- the bit where one of them goes 'rrrright!'

this tune is a must-hear!
and ed, where my copy?!!?!?!?

They attempt hip-hop cool and actually generate Eurovision naffness. I think that British people are well-placed to judge the record as we are in the middle; we are perplexed by hip-hop on the one hand, but appreciate its, well, hipness, but equally we are nonplussed by Europop and cannot understand how naff it can be. Normally we are only reminded off it once a year when the Eurovision song contest occurs, but this record came out in the autumn. So, not only was it a summer record a few months too late, but its incongruity was aggrevated as we were getting a dose of Europop at a time when we least expected it.

I think there were lots of wry smiles on the faces of Brits when they heard the record for the first time - they were plagiarising Cliff Richard for chrissakes. It would be difficult to imagine a more uncool artist to rip off, but G & Sven were probably unaware of this.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Miker "G" and Sven were here to stay.

Sadly for them this was not the case.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

They invented Junior Senior.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They invented Fucking DeWaele Bros. No joke. Sadly.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"They invented Junior Senior"

Bastard! I thought i was first to notice!

five months pass...
weird comment from MarkH upthread: from "Y Viva Espana" onwards many Europop records have charted in September in the UK (industry logic: release them here just as Brits are coming home from le conny nonn ...)

I like the idea of them pissing off Cliff Richard by using one of his songs in a "rap" context. he was pretty big in Holland, in his day, but didn't have the cultural meaning.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 21 December 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It takes more than that to piss off Cliff Richard, matey boy...

rik (mark grout), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

a priceless 80s classic! ;-) Gotta love that Dutch accent ;-) Thanks for posting the lyrics!

Rudolf (Rudolf), Monday, 22 December 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This "song" was based on a great sample from Madonna's "Holiday". As always, the original was sooo much better....

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

blimey he's right...

(if not a little obv)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so glad geir pointed that out. Would never have guessed that... ;-P

Rudolf (Rudolf), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you guys agree with the "as always" part of my statement too :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This song is great.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Damn right. I got the video too but can't remember if it's good or not. It has to be good, surely. I got another Miker G song once but it was shit.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Yer not wrong there. Pisses on Snoop's new effort for one.

I guess by their absence that this song is unknown to the ILM USA hip hop contingent, which is a shame.

X Post

Yoh like the Miker "G" so I used my voice
And soon I bought a big Rolls Royce.

If it's good enough for Bolan's voice, it should be good enough for his!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

It also reminds me of 'What You Get Is What You See' by Cortez Vs. X-Ray Ft. Lemon Juice. What's this sound known as? Ropey euro-rap and whatnot?

after watching this video like 12 times in a row, i tracked down this song and i don't think i'll ever be the same. the beat rip-off is so brazen but can't miss, the english so hilariously clumsy and innocent, the way the one dude's hat in the video recalls ridgeley's in the equally bouncy and smile-inducing "wake me up before you gogo" vid: it all adds up to a eurorap track that might just exceed Urban Dance Squad's "Deeper Shade of Soul" for sheer mindnumbing cheese.

PS: I also love the way the line "take a little piece of amsterdam" automatically makes me think they are bringing a huge brick of dank green with them on their holiday even though it's probably just that these guys are from there or some shit.

Deeper Shade Of Soul is ace.

This song kicked off the true Golden Age of hip-hop

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

On the street, there was a party bigger than Hollywood

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

that's quite big, then.

Were Mikey and Sven a sort of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup to Scooter's Elvis?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Gotta add this to my iPod tonight. Too long since I've heard it.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

I kissed a hot Dutch girl at a French campsite disco as a result of this song. Totally due a revival.
