Beach Boys - Mt Vernopn and Fairway (A Fairy Tale): A Fairy Tale In Several Parts Classic Or Dud?

So lets discuss this little oddity. Does it have any redeeming qualities or is it merely a load of acid-fried arse?

Anyone reckon it might tell us something about Brian's state at the time? What was the reason behind it?

No! Don't sink you bastard!

It sucks. I was very disappointed when I finally heard it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the wacky bonus 7" with Holland?

i'm sure it's very interesting to the elephant 6 crowd but ultimately just a novelty bonus 7". a lot of forcibly "trippy" stories as i remember it. something about a radio or a hi-fi?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, it ain't any worse than "Love You".

I enjoy it more for its oddness rather than any profound musical movements. But it's the last thing the Beach Boys would ever release that approximated the giddy, drug-addled silliness of "Smile" -- for better or worse. (aside from the post-humous release of the remnants of "Smile", of course)

It's also the perfect thing to play in the car on a long road trip with friends when you're finally hankerin' down to find a place to stay, and it's really late. Never fails to wake everyone up and put puzzled smiles on everyone's faces.

(gyg, yeah, it's a fairy tale about a magic transistor radio)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

does it have a point/moral? i always get bored or switch off before the story ends. plus it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense plotwise either...

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it's crap.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i find it utterly charmless, unlike much of "love you."

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The character development is weak.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the one with Magic Transistor Radio on it? that Drop City used for an album title?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i like it, i dont think of it as wacky or anything though, its more just very sad and lonely

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud for repeat listening. Classic as a bit of ephemera.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Utter rubbish - shows that the other Beach Boys were quite right to keep Brian out of the studio during this period. Listen to Harry Nilsson's "The Point" to see what Brian's addled brain was grasping for a falling far short of achieving.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it would be nice to have the music without the words - i reckon that would be quite chilled.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Kind of a dud -- though props to Jack Rieley for actually doing a decent narration.
